Mass Effect Tourist Guide
Part 3: Massively effective. Er, spoilers, obv.
Please note! While it should go without saying, it seldom does in the world of the Internet: reading a guide to the final sections of a game is likely to spoil it for you if you haven't reached them on your own.
Once more unto the breach, dear friends! Literally. This is the last chunk of our tourist guide to the Mass Effect universe before you plunge into the final battle against Saren and his Geth army, so lets mop up those last side quests for maximum experience points. For those inexplicably joining us at this stage, the idea of this guide is not to walk you through the game - the story missions are yours to discover - but to help you find all the side quests and let you know which ones are worth doing. We'll start, as always, with the assignments that take place in and around the story missions, picking up from parts one and two...
Sentry Omega
- System: Hoc
- Planet: Virmire
Wrex and the Genophage
Upon arrival at the Salarian beach head on Virmire, Wrex will become agitated at the prospect of destroying a facility that could save his species. It's up to you to talk him round. It's not clear why this appears in the assignment list, since you have to go through this encounter in order to continue with the game - but it's in there, so it's in here. The penalty for failure is that you'll have to kill Wrex - or Ashley will do it for you - so if you've been building him up, there's a huge incentive to get this right. Thankfully, if you've maxed out either Charm or Intimidate, it's not that hard.
Worth doing? Well, duh. You save an extremely useful member of your squad, and earn an Achievement in the process. Kids love Achievements. I think they can be traded in for sweets or something.
Assisting Kirrahe's Team

This is less of an optional assignment and more of a string of secondary objectives to be carried out during the Virmire mission into Saren's base. The aim is to mess up the Geth defences so as to make life easier for the decoy squad led by Captain Kirrahe and whichever of your team you sent with him. As you go along, stop off at each of the facilities shown on the map and find the exclamation mark. Your first act of sabotage should disrupt Geth communications. The next involves shooting their satellite uplink (look up!). You can destroy the Geth air support while it's at the refuelling station, and finally opt to switch off the alarms to draw some fire away from Kirrahe and his team.
Worth doing? You'll be heading straight past the locations in question, so the only reason not to help out is if you're playing as a Renegade. Each disruption earns you a couple of Paragon points, you see. You'll also pick up Kirrahe's surviving troops in the Normandy, giving you access to Commander Rentola's supplies for a short time.
Citadel
NOTE: You can return to the Citadel at any time after you first leave to find a fresh batch of assignments. Once you leave the Citadel after Virmire, you will be able to revisit other planets to complete off-world assignments (such as Hostile Takeover) but will be unable to return to the Citadel so make sure you tidy up any loose ends before escaping.
The Fan
Conrad Verner is still loitering around the Upper Wards, all creepy like. Following your initial encounter, you can speak with him two more times. You don't need to wait to complete another story mission before returning - a simple jaunt to an uncharted world will do the trick.
Worth doing? Yes, if only because somebody has got to find out where this stalker nonsense is leading...
The Fourth Estate

The first time you return to the Citadel, you'll be pounced upon by a reporter as you exit the Normandy and quizzed on your role in the galactic community. There's no real way to succeed or fail here - just answer how you see fit. Those chasing Renegade points will be pleased to learn that it's even possible to punch her in the face, live on camera. Regardless of how you approach the interview, you'll hear the reaction on newscasts in elevators and Lance Henriksen will also call you up with his thoughts on how you came across. In real life. Not the game. For realz.
Worth doing? You've got no choice. This how Britney must feel every single day.
Planting a Bug
When you return to the Citadel - either as part of the story, or by your own choice - reporter Emily Wong has another favour to ask. She's investigating safety lapses in flight control, and needs you to plant a bug in the relevant room in C-SEC so she can see if overworked controllers are endangering vessels.
Worth doing? Not the most riveting of assignments - you simply walk into the room and press A - but Emily pays well, and she's quite cute. You might get to "do" her in the sequel, so let's be nice.
Hostile Takeover
You'll find Helena Blake loitering near Barla Von's office on the Presidium. You can hack a computer in C-SEC to trigger the quest, and discover that she's a suspicious character, but it's pretty obvious even just from walking up and talking to her. She wants you to eliminate two ganglords - one in the Hades Gamma system, one in Gemini Sigma. New solar systems open up in each for this assignment. If you take her up on the offer, simply visit each syndicate and wipe them out. You then have to rendezvous with Helena and decide how you're going to deal with her...
Worth doing? Yes. The Syndicates put up a good fight, and you'll clock up some cool weaponry, experience and those all important Paragon/Renegade points.
Our Own Worst Enemy

There's a demonstration in the Upper Wards on behalf of the Terra Firma political party. The party leader asks for your endorsement, and it's up to you whether or not you want to align yourself with the space age BNP. No, really. You choose. Racist.
Worth doing? You're in the area anyway to meet with Anderson, and it only takes a moment to make your choice. Much like The Fan, this feels like a decision that will be lurking on your hard drive for Mass Effect 2 so you might as well take a stand.
Negotiator's Request
At the bottom of the steps leading to Flux you'll find Elias Keeler, an Alliance negotiator. He wants you to fetch him some "mental stimulant", which is legal although he's already used up his monthly quota. There are multiple ways to deal with him, from Nancy Reagan "Just Say No" advice to cruel tricks, so the choice is yours.
Worth doing? Not really. You get Paragon or Renegade points, but the Renegade path is the most fun.
Family Matter
Here's an odd little vignette to drop into the game just as everything is building to a galaxy-threatening climax. A man and a woman are arguing in the Financial District of the Presidium. She's pregnant and doesn't want to have gene therapy to eradicate a possible heart condition in the baby, even though her husband died from the same condition. He's her brother-in-law and wants his brother's child to be safe and healthy. Make like Jeremy Kyle, resolve the situation however you wish, and they'll go on their way.
Worth doing? Bizarrely, yes. For such a short and rather silly assignment you can earn 920 XP along with Paragon or Renegade points.
Gemini Sigma
- System: Ming
- Planet: N/A
Lost Freighter
There's a seemingly abandoned ship, the MSV Worthington, drifting near to Antiropus. Inside you'll find some booby traps (nothing to worry about, provided you have good shields) and a brain dead body hooked up to a life support machine. Investigate the ships logs to solve the mystery.
Worth doing? For completists only. There's one good scare, but this system is not exactly filled with things to do, so it's not really worth the journey just for this curious little tale.
- Planet: Altanorch
There's a League of One medallion here.
Voyager Cluster
- System: Amazon
- Planet: Agebinium
Espionage Probe
Lance Henriksen is on the blower again, and that can only mean trouble. This time it's a relic from the First Contact War - a spy probe loaded with a nuke to stop aliens tampering with it. It's suddenly popped up on the space radar again, and could prove rather embarrassing for the Alliance if the Council hear about it. This mission is pretty straightforward once you reach the planet surface - just find the mine, head inside and see what happens...
Worth doing? Not so much for the rewards, but it is one of the few side quests to have plot twists and surprises.
BONUS: There's a Turian insignia here as well.
- Planet: Sybin
There's a Turian insignia here.
- System: Yangtze
- Planet: Binthu
Cerberus
In Greek myth, Cerberus had three heads and guarded the gate to Hell. In Mass Effect, the Cerberus crime syndicate has three research bases in which they conduct hellish genetic experiments. See? Who says games can't be all, like, literate and...stuff? It's pretty obvious what you need to do - storm each of the bases, eliminating enemy and monsters alike. Find Admiral Kahoku to activate the next assignment, Hades' Dogs.

Worth doing? Yep. This storyline is one of the meatier subplots in the game, and there's plenty of combat - which means lots of XP and valuable loot.
BONUS: There's a Prothean data disc at the top of that really cool pyramid.
- Planet: Alrumter
BONUS:There's a Prothean data disc here.
- System: Columbia
- Planet: Nepheron
Hades' Dogs
The final chapter in the Cerberus subplot is actually pretty simple. The main Cerberus base in this system is located on this planet, cryptically marked as Underground Facility on your map, so just steam in and kick some ass. Assuming you've not jumped into this mission right at the start of the game, it's not a tough fight. In the far room, snaffle whatever data you can from the computer and return to the Normandy. A representative of the Shadowbroker contacts you, and makes an offer for the data...
Worth doing? The conclusion to the story is a bit anticlimactic, but there are loads of weapons and items to grab along the way and you can make serious money if you don't mind dealing with the Shadowbroker.
BONUS: There's a Salarian ID tag here as well.
- Planet: Gromar
BONUS: There's a League of One medallion here.
Maroon Sea

- System: Vostok
- Planet: Nodacrux
ExoGeni Facility
This is one of the assignments you can trigger while on Feros, and involves investigating a distress beacon from an ExoGeni science facility. It's overrun with Thorian creepers, so once again it's a question of blasting through another familiar layout until you reach the back room. Here you'll meet Doctor Ross, the scientist behind the whole mess. It's up to you how to deal with her.
Worth doing? Probably. There are decent rewards for both Paragon and Renegade players here.
BONUS: There's a Turian insignia here as well. Plus, Nodacrux is home to space horses, which aren't quite as cool as space monkeys but are still worth checking out.
- Planet: Pataiton
BONUS: There are Matriarch's Writings here.
Derelict Freighter
You'll find the MSV Cornucopia drifting in the Caspian system. Board it and you're greeted by Husks - all that remains of the crew. Wipe them out - quite tricky in the maze-like confines of the main hold - and then head to the cockpit to find out what the heck is going on.
Worth doing? Not unless you have an overpowering Husk fetish.
- Planet: Antida

BONUS: There's a Turian insignia here.
- System: Mantano
- Planet: Chasca
Colony of the Dead
If you triggered this quest on Feros then you'll know it by the more prosaic name of Investigate Samples, but once you touch down on Chasca it changes to this rather more dramatic title. It's our old friends Cerberus again. ExoGeni sold genetic samples to the criminal empire, and the Chasca colony is the result - Husks galore. There are three structures in all, with the science building being the rather obvious location for the vital info needed to close the assignment. There's not much else to say, so get in there and start putting those poor sods out of their misery.
Worth doing? Only for those chasing combat XP, to be honest.
- Planet: N/A
BONUS: There's a Prothean data disc on an asteroid in this system.
Armstrong Nebula
NOTE: When you arrive at the Armstrong Nebula, Lance Henriksen gets in touch again. This launches the Geth Incursion assignment, which involves wiping out four Geth forces throughout the nebula. It doesn't matter which order you tackle them, just as long as all four outposts are wiped out. This is one of the side quests you should certainly consider doing, since completing it also helps Tali finish her pilgrimage, notching up another assignment in the process.
System: Vamshi
- Planet: Maji
Geth Incursion
This Geth outpost is tricky to reach. It's at the top of a winding mountain track, with heavy turrets along the way. You can try sneaking in over the top, but it's more trouble than its worth, frankly. The outpost itself is much the same as the one on Casbin, but this time you'll have to face a Geth Colossus before the camp is truly destroyed. Again, the Mako's slow shield regeneration and shonky camera can make this harder than it needs to be. Find a spot with a good shot at the Colossus, fill it with lead, and boost over its plasma blasts when it fires.
BONUS: There's a Turian insignia here, and a "strange skull".
- Planet: Pregel
BONUS: There's a Turian insignia here.
- System: Hong
- Planet: Casbin
Geth Incursion
There are two Geth brigades here - one at the outpost, one at the anomalous signal. The outpost is the one you want, though feel free to tackle both. At first you'll face snipers and rocket troops, bunkered down in those turrets. Deal with them, and a dropship will swoop in and start adding shock troopers to the mix. Kill enough of those and you've won the day. In terms of tactics, it's safer to deal with the snipers and rockets using the Mako, but I found dealing with the shock troopers much easier after I got out of the sluggish vehicle with the rigid cannon and used my tooled up squad on the ground instead.
BONUS: There's a Salarian ID tag here as well.
- Planet: Matar
BONUS: There are Matriarch's Writings here.
- System: Tereshkova
- Planet: Antibaar

Geth Incursion
This icy world has very low visibility. The Geth outpost is in a natural rock basin, making attack difficult except for by direct approach. To make matters worse, there's a Geth Colossus already waiting for you - so make that your primary target. Once you've defeated the Colossus, snipers and rocket troopers, a dropship will add a mixture of shock troopers and Geth Prime to the battle. The Mako's secondary fire (RB) comes in handy here, as they'll be bunched together and vulnerable to its explosive impact.
BONUS: There's a Prothean data disc here, but it's guarded by a Thresher Maw. It's possible to pick it up and drive back out again without being killed, with a bit of luck. Ignore the anomaly right in the middle of the Maw's lair - it just tells you that the bodies were killed by a Thresher Maw. No, really?
- Planet: N/A
BONUS: There's a League of One medallion on an asteroid in this system.
- System: Gagarin
- Planet: Rayingri
Geth Incursion
Your target this time is the overrun facility. There are husks inside but, once you deal with them, the Geth reveal themselves. Clear out the whole building, then go back outside to deal with some more Geth. You'll now locate a signal from the main base behind this incursion, opening up the final section of this monster assignment.
BONUS: There's a League of One medallion here as well.
- Planet: Junthor
BONUS: There are Matriarch's Writings here.
- System: Grissom
- Planet: Solcrum
Geth Incursion

Solcrum is the small moon orbiting Notanban. You can't miss the Geth base on the map - it's not far from where you land. There are two Geth Colossi waiting for you outside, along with the expected snipers and rockets, and inside is even tougher - a room swarming with the toughest Geth types around, including several Geth Destroyers, who will charge at you and pound you to paste. Defeat all of them and then head to the back room and hack the console. You'll receive vital information about the Geth, which opens up the Tali and the Geth assignment.
BONUS: There are Matriarch's Writings here as well.
- Planet: Benda
BONUS: There's a League of One medallion here.
- Planet: N/A
Tali and the Geth
Back on board the Normandy, after completing the Geth Incursion marathon, head down to the drive room and talk to Tali. She'll ask for a copy of the Geth data to take back to her people, as part of her pilgrimage. Give it to her to complete this assignment.
Kepler Verge
System: Newton
- Planet: Ontarom
Dead Scientists
This is an investigation you can start on Noveria, where it appears as Doctor at Risk, but if you chose the war hero background for Shepard then it takes on a whole new aspect once Lance Henriksen fills you in. As the new title suggests, scientists have been turning up dead - and they're all tied in with the massacre on Akuze that you survived. It's now a race to get to the last remaining scientist to find out what's going on. At first this assignment looks like just another search-and-destroy against some mercenary thugs, but once you reach the scientist it becomes rather more interesting.
Worth doing? Not a particularly exciting mission, but if you chose the war hero option when creating your character, this fills in some cool backstory.
BONUS: There's a Turian insignia here as well.

- Planet: Klencory
BONUS: There are Matriarch's Writings here.
Garrus: Find Dr. Saleon
- System: Herschel
- Planet: N/A
This is another crew assignment, activated by chinwagging with your companions between missions. Gain the confidence of Garrus and he'll eventually start talking about a case he never solved while working at C-SEC. It involved a doctor growing cloned organs inside his staff, but the Salarian in question was never caught. Garrus has the info needed to track the guy, and it'll lead you here - where the MSV Fedele awaits. Add Garrus to your squad, wipe out the shambling test subjects and then find the not-so-good doctor. Garrus wants to put a bullet in his head, naturally. What happens next is up to you.
Worth doing? Not really. This is a pretty generic combat mission followed by a standard moral dilemma. The rewards are small, and the loot minimal.
Styx Theta
NOTE: Just as the Armstrong Nebula is the backdrop for the planet-hopping Geth Incursion, so the Styx Theta cluster offers an ongoing series of assignments revolving around the nasty looking rachni. The assignments tend to run into each other, so we'll just say at the start that this little subplot is certainly worth doing. It's one of the meatier side quests in the game, and has lots of cool combat. If you tackle it after the Noveria story missions, you'll have an advantage as you'll know what you're dealing with.
- System: Acheron
- Planet: Altahe
Listening Post Theta
Head for the listening post to discover it's overrun with rachni. Wipe 'em out, then check out the computer and comms array. There's a record of a supply ship, and an urgent distress call from the neighbouring system of Erebus. Something fishy is clearly going on, and the trail leads to the Argos Rho...
BONUS: There are Matriarch's Writings here as well.
- Planet: N/A
BONUS: There's a Turian insignia on an asteroid in this system.
- System: Erebus
- Planet: Nepmos
Listening Post Alpha
Tipped off by the message received on Altahe, make your way to the listening post and you'll discover a handful of marines under siege from swarms of rachni. Yes, it's Starship Troopers time. Talk to Lt Durand, then lend them a hand with your superior firepower - you can hook the Mako up to the generator to fire up the automated cannons - and keep the rachni at bay until their numbers run out. Talk to Durand again, and you'll learn that there's an underground rachni lair. The coordinates are added to your map. Are you man (or woman) enough to finish the job? Go to the infested mine and clear it of rachni - you need to kill the two brood warriors in the end chambers to complete this portion of the mission.
Depot Sigma-23

To finish off the rachni subplot, you need to scoot back to the Argos Rho cluster, and the newly added Gorgon system will be available. There's only one place of interest there - the unidentified space structure. Board it, pick off the rachni then check out the personal logs near the cockpit to find out which shady criminal syndicate is behind this whole palaver. Now set some charges and leg it back to the Normandy - just dodge the rachni in the hold on the way back, and heal as you go.
BONUS: There's a League of One medallion here as well.
- Planet: Wermani
BONUS: There's a Prothean data disc here.
Background Specific Assignments
Remember when you were creating your very own Commander Shepard? How you chose from three different backgrounds - Colonist, Spacer and Earthborn? Here's where it comes into play - there are three missions in the game that can only be accessed by those with the appropriate background. These missions can generally be found anytime between the first story missions on Feros and Noveria, and the final visit to the Citadel after Virmire.
Old Friends
This mission only appears if you chose the Earthborn background, and is triggered just outside Chora's Den. Finch, a member of the same gang you used to run with on Earth, demands your help in freeing someone from Turian custody. The guard in question is in the bar and, as always, it's up to you how to approach the situation. Whether this will come back to haunt you remains to be seen.
Worth doing? Technically, no. But what's the point of choosing a background for your character if you're not going to do the quest that ties in with it?
I Remember Me

This is the mission for those who chose a Colonist background, and it involves a girl from the colony where you grew up. She was taken as a slave, and is now suicidal. You've got to talk her out of a deadly plunge from the docking bay.
Worth doing? As with Old Friends, why not?
Old, Unhappy, Far Off Things
This is the mission for those with a Spacer background. Between the Wards and Presidium you'll find a rather wretched figure who asks for money. This assignment actually finds you calling up Shepard's mum, and discovering that this is an old family friend. Help him in whichever way seems best.
Worth doing? Looks like even space heroes don't phone their mum often enough, so you probably shouldn't pass up the chance.
Paragon Specialist Assignment
Besieged Base
Once your Paragon level is above 75%, Lance Henriksen gets in touch with a special assignment. A science facility has been taken over by biotic terrorists, and you're needed to clear the building without harming the staff, who have all been drugged up and are wandering around like idiots. It's actually easier than it sounds. These terrorists aren't the brightest bunch, so if you were expecting to use precision shots to take down bad guys hiding behind human shields, think again. Once they're alerted to your presence, you can back away to a safe area and wait for them to come to you.
Worth doing? Not really. You do get 24 Paragon points, but as you only get this quest once you've already earned a ton of Paragon points that's not much of a prize.
Renegade Specialist Assignment
The Negotiation
If you've been a very bad boy and filled the Renegade meter to over 75%, then Lance Henriksen sends you to do some dirty work on the planet Nonuel, in the Hades Gamma Cluster. As the name suggests, you'll be expected to deal with the criminals from the warlord's base, as well as a mercenary camp, by using your Intimidate skills. Or your guns. Up to you, really.

Worth doing? Much the same as the Paragon assignment, though there's better loot to be had here.
UNC Collection Assignments
These are the ongoing assignments in which you scour the galaxy for ancient relics and valuable resources. The best way to complete these is to investigate everything while in deep space. Scan every planet and asteroid, explore every mineral deposit and go off the beaten track when in the Mako - many secret items don't show up on the map. The key thing to remember is that there are more of each item than you actually need - the number in the quest isn't the total amount in the galaxy, but just the amount you need to find. Provided you're being thorough, you should have more than enough to complete all these quests by the time you reach the final story missions. If not, take advantage of those last moments of freedom in between the Citadel and Ilos to track down whatever's missing.
The End?
And that's it. All that remains is to head to Ilos and begin the last push against Saren. If you've explored every last nook and cranny of the galaxy then you should be more than up to the task. For reference, in the process of putting together this guide I ended the game with Shepard tantalisingly close to level 50, with 57 completed assignments, just over 36 hours on the clock, more than seven million credits in the bank and over 230,000 XP. If you're anywhere close to this by the time you try to save the Citadel, the universe should be in safe hands. Now, bring on Mass Effect 2...

Doesn't the XP change based on which level your on? I'm sure it does, cos on my first playthru I did the keepers quite late and I remember getting around 420 XP for each keeper I scanned. Then, when I replayed it I did this as one of the first missions and only ended up getting 10 XP for each!

I loved it despite its framerate issues (still nowhere near as bad as Two Worlds, which I couldn't play at all without getting a headache), and I actually just began a second playthrough with the same character (you start with the level, skills and items you ended with) on hardcore mode - something I really hadn't expected to feel compelled to do. Usually once I'm done with a story heavy game - just like a book or a movie - I really don't feel like taking another look at it for another several months, no matter how much I loved it.
I think it's the real time combat system in this game that might make the difference for me this time (though I do expect to get back to Assassin's Creed now again as well - no need to rush through the second ME playthrough). It might not stand up to proper 3rd person shooters, but I rarely play shooters so for me it was a really nice change.

That's nice to know. What about "Insanity mode", is it unlocked after 1st playthrough on 'Normal' ?

Hardcore isn't hard if you're playing with an already levelled character, haven't tried it with a "fresh" one yet.
