UK Charts: Saints Row over Cars
THQ knocks one off.
Publisher THQ has knocked itself off the top of the charts in the UK, as Saints Row nudges Cars to the number two position to claim the top spot in its first week of sales.
The gang-based action adventure game has benefited from heavy promotion on satellite channels and becomes the second fastest-selling Xbox 360 title after Ubisoft's Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter.
Rockstar's crime sim Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories drops a place to the number three position, followed by DS exclusive New Super Mario Bros.
The Sims 2: Glamour Life Stuff is the only other new entry in the top ten, making its debut at number five, with The Sims 2 nestling behind at number 6.
Both Dr Kawashima's Brain Training and Pro Evolution Soccer are nudged down the charts to number seven and eight respectively, while Eidos' Reservoir Dogs breaks into the top ten at nine, in its second week of release. Another DS exclusive title, Animal Crossing: Wild World drops three places to number ten.
There are two other new entries in the top 40. Sony's PSP exclusive Getaway spin-off Gangs of London charts at number 23, while Sega's Let's Make a Soccer Team! debuts at number 31.
Next week sees the release of two Xbox 360 titles set to challenge Saints Row for the number one position: Capcom's Dead Rising and Atari's Test Drive Unlimited, both of which have received encouraging media coverage.

I'm waiting for Saint Mario's Row; where Mario has to rescue his bitch from a rival gang leader.

And being number 1 doesn't mean the game is good by default, just means hype, popularity and lack of games for 360 in general (just now) has helped to boost it to the top, it's good that a 360 game has got to the top however.
Of course, Dead Rising is out this week (pre-ordered and can't wait) and I know it's going to be #1 next week which will make a change (a decent game at the top spot).
thankyou and goodnight.

You've played it of course? Many GTA fans are saying in many ways they prefer this. But yes, 'any half-decent clone'....

I never said it was rubbish. Let's put it this way - if GTA4 and Saints Row had launched in the same week, how many sales do you think Saints Row would've done? Precisely.
Precisely what? You have a clear definitive answer? Speculating isn't going to make your argument any better.

my humble judgement is that the nature of what makes gta excellent is diversity. if the next gta had no guns in it at all it would still be a massive game; because of the humour, the freedom and the razor sharp satire.
the fact that it does both guns AND satire is what makes it such a blockbuster, similar to how the simpsons appeals to so many different age groups.

Anyway, good to see Saint's Row at number 1, its a really good game, hoping for much bigger and better things for the eventual sequel now they've gotten their foot in the door. As has been said, I'm sure Dead Rising will give it a fight next week... not to mention TDU (I'm not getting it) and Just Cause (definately getting it) over the next few weeks. Looking a bit healthy on the games front for the 360 (at last... man the summer was dry).

And the Xbox 360 is obviously doing well in general in the UK.. To bad we never get to see such numbers for the rest of Europe, or my country the Netherlands in particular..
