Question: is Bioshock's enviroment as dark and claustrophobic as Doom 3? I understand that screenshots are unjust to this game and that's what they make me remember. Bad memories!

@BremXJones: Er, no abandonware here. I have a DVD case with a "Classics" version of System Shock 2 and it came with co-op. Never thought it was buggy either. Maybe I'm living in bizarroworld and I'm talking to you all through a rift in the space-time continuum?

Looked it up on the great I-net: http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/sy...

Check out the patch notes: "Only for the original (US) SS2 release - not needed for re-packaged "budget" versions." Phew, I'm not going out of my mind after all.

Oooh. Bit early isn't it?

/reads review

edit: "There is a budget release of SS2 (which isn't abandonware for the record!) as I own it."

Well, I would love for you to inform me where to get it, as there isn't any copies of it anywhere. And I don't use Ebay. I've been looking for it for ages now.

Rapture's halls are dark and claustrophobic, yes, but lit with dappled ocean greens and the distant sizzling neon of their broken dreams.

it's a pretty enough place, in a horrific, blood-spattered, dystopian sort of way.

Great review. I'm pleased this game lived up to all it's promise; this has pretty much sold me a 360 by the time I've managed to save enough money to get one early next year (putting away £60 a month) unless Sony can pull something incredible out of the PS3 bag before then.

Getting this as an exclusive was probably the best thing MS have done for the 360 to date.

Claustrophobic on a totally different level to Doom 3, going by the demo. In fact, they shouldn't really be compared, as Doom 3 was clautrophobic because of cramped level design and darkness, and Bioshock is because of sheer atmosphere, both corridors and open scenery, and sound design.

Bioshock is what Doom 3 should have been, and then a hell of a lot more.

What I want to know is this:

Is Bioshock as significant, or god forbid, more significant to the videogames industry than the original Doom?

By the sounds of the review, this game is already in the top 3 games of ALL time?!

"The first real testcase for my newly build rig. I'm still not entirely convinced of the high marks though, the gameplay trailers that have been shown are a bit lacklustre. "

You'll just have to trust people who have played the demo and the full game: it's obvious from the start that the one thing BioShock certainly doesn't lack ... is lustre.

Yeah, with the 10/10 etc, are we already talking about bioshock being the best game ever. Is this as important as say Mario 64.

Very impressed by the demo although repeated plays dim the excitement a little cos the opening part is looong. However, seems very promising indeed, but for me other games like Mass Effect and Halo 3 have higher priority.

A fps in a completely closed enviroment in 2007 scores immediately a -3 malus on my book. But I won't judge the game from this thing alone. Only, don't tell me that neither of you or the reviewer knows that after Half Life or Halo and the like, we have just moved beyond that point and no matter how good a game is, decisions like this can harm it.

xdiesp: I don't agree. The whole point of BioShock is that Rapture is cut-off from the rest of the world and imploding in on itself. The whole claustrophobia thing is, in my opinion, integral to the atmosphere the game gives. You can look outside and see a vast ocean teeming with life, but at the same time you're very aware that you're trapped inside a narrow, twisting city that is rotting away.

Yes, why?

If a game took place in a shoebox it could still be the best game ever/in years/of the year, as long as the stuff that happens in the shoebox is utterly awesome.

I know it's a good game, but let's not go over board with the fapping. It's not the best game ever made, and hearing everyone gushing over it becomes nauseating. Buy it, play it, have a good time. But less of the oscar worthy speeches please, I've just eaten

I don't get why it's a 'bad thing' to be enthusiastic or excited about a game. The bloody industry has enough of a hard-edged cynical business air to it as it is, so if people want to post here about looking forward to BioShock or them feeling excited by it then all the better as far as I am concerned.

@SniperWolf

I've only played the demo, so I can't tell.

But why can't it be the 'best game ever made,' if there is such thing? Personally I think that games are too diverse for there to be a single 'best', but assuming that there's an over all best, why not this one?

If we assume that every so often a game comes out that surpasses everything gone before (which must be true, if you believe in a 'best game ever'), I don't see why Bioshock has any less of a chance of being that game than anything else.

**Start of public Xbox 360 transmission**

Asda are doing Bioshock for £34.97 (already good as it includes free delivery)

Here's the best bit, currently they are giving 10% discount on all Entertainment orders.

The code is ENT10 (that’s a one and a zero - ten in other words)

Brings it down to £31.47

AND

They send it out as soon as they have the stock from the publisher (i.e. normally a few days early).

**End of public Xbox 360 transmission**

Edit - PearOfAnguish obviously forgot to mention the price was for 360 hence the edit - thanks for pointing it out though, "forgot" about the PC for a second.

This and Halo 3 are the reasons to get 360 this year. Sadly without a price cut and with that hardware I can't convince myself that it would be a smart buy. Roll on 2008!

You can tell this game is causing a stir, people in the comments thread are getting angry about the fact the vast majority of people have a consensus and are excited about something for once!

However, as someone else said, considering EG are the only ones out of us on this thread to have played the full game, I think we should refrain from the "good it was a 10/10 thats what it deserved this is the best game ever" speak just yet.
