Pre-ordered! 10/10 game for 25 quid? Hasn't happened in a while! I loved the 50's art style in the demo!

Now, to free up some space (8 gig install!)...

The music and feel reminds me a bit of the ballroom scene in 'The Shining'.
And thats a creepy film.

It'll sell a few million but it won't do Gears numbers. I know several of my 360 owning friends that this doesn't even register on their radar but they are well aware of COD4 and the like.

hang on - is that wrong ?

Thanks Kristan for not giving anything away about the game but somehow managing to convey this as an almost certain game of the year/nomination for game of the decade. Also, I agree with your multiplayer point. I've been looking forward to seeing some developers focus on the single-player experience, allowing others to specialise in online multiplayer.

Hey, could anyone answer if it's as combat heavy as the videos at the end of the demo suggest? Because I loved the demo's moody atmosphere and sense of wandering around so much that I'd hate to see it ruined by constant FPS fighting later in the game.

Actually, I am a bit pissed that it doesn't have multi-player. Why? Because System Shock 2 had co-op multiplayer! Whenever System Shock 2 made you crap your pants too much, you could always call in a friend to huddle in a corner with. But not so in Bioshock! I still think they should have made a co-op feature in this game too. It worked so well in System Shock 2..

It's not constant combat, no - some splicers do repopulate previously cleared areas, but in a way that feels credible.

Hey, I've just thought of a niggle - that of being able to use a health pack even when your health is 100%. That was silly, Irrational.

I really f*cking wish I'd worked on this. Its the kind of title that just gives you a warm feeling.

As a gamer because I love playing quality games, and as a dev because you just think "they just MUST have their shit in order to make a game this good, I bet it was a blast".

Canada is a long way away though :(

@Emilia'sHorse: was it patched in later, just as with Deus Ex?

I have no clue as my version of System Shock 2 comes with co-op already installed.

You know what is interesting about this?

A lot of people rag on the 360 and the PS3 for just delivering the same old thing but with prettier graphics, saying they dont add anything much to a game. (personally I disagreee but there it is.)

Its just that in this instance, a bit part of what makes this game feel special is the incredible atmosphere and art direction. The game would have looked a lot worse on 'last-gen' tech and so would have lost much of what appeals about it.

Could this be one of the instances where 'next-gen' graphics genuinely improve a game beyond just visually, in the way it makes you feel and immerses you?

ell, I'd like to do a road to Bioshock sort of thing, tracing it back to Ultima Underworlds - I've always wanted to do a history of the Looking Glass Diaspora.

Like a sort of games version of "Rock Family Trees"? It's funny how this subgenre has persisted and developed over the years, generally to critical acclaim and massive financial failure... looks like Bioshock will buck this trend, thankfully.

Games that should probably be on the list:

Ultima Underworld 1&2
System Shock 1&2
Deus Ex
Deus Ex: Invisible War
Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines (don't know if there's an Origin connection, but there's a lot of design similarities...)

mkreku: It was patched in after release by Irrational/Looking Glass. Dunno what version you've got, but I suspect if you got the (er) abandomware version, it may already be patched.

(I presume this as since Shock 2 didn't have a budget release as far as I'm aware, the boxed copy is all you get).

I know that Irrational regret doing Co-op in Shock 2. They were very aware that it was incredibly hard to get working and the vast, vast majority of people didn't play it significantly. They felt that if they put all the effort they'd lobbed into the co-op into single player, it'll have been a much better game.

tiddles: As far as I'm aware, there's no actually connection in terms of staff between the guys at Troika who did Vampire at the LG area.

Naaah. Sods law. It'll either:

1. Arrive the day before, so you get a taster, then you have to give it up!

2. Or it'll be lost in the mail, and you'll be so dissapointed when you finally get back from your holiday that you need another holiday!

I haven't a 360 to play it on. Have to walk over, borrow someone's, walk back. About an hours walk, in all.

Freelance: My mistake. I believe I got confused since it certainly wasn't kept in print for very long.

(And that's why I went "abandonware" rather than saying it really was. That it's available in torrents from the more reputable sites means that EA hasn't actually told them to STOP)

If this game does indeed live up to the 'spiritual successor to System Shock' label, then it would be nothing short of justice for it to sell a gazzillion copies.

Great review EG, this is the game on the promise of which I bought a 360.
