2K details BioShock PS3 Trophies News

PlayStation 3 News by Robert Purchese

22 July, 2008

2K Marin has explained how you'll be able to collect a few of the Trophies in the PS3 version of BioShock.

These range from bronze to platinum, according to producer Alyssa Finley on the US PlayStation blog, and are designed to entice you into exploring Rapture.

Bronze rewards will be dished out for researching, modifying weapons, hacking and crafting, with each skill apparently "loaded" with awards. You could find yourself up to "your armpits in prizes", said Finley.

Silver Trophies will be more rare. The one example used was the historian award, given to those who find all the audio diaries in Rapture. They reveal lots of back-story behind events unfolding during the game and it's worth doing anyway, we reckon.

Meanwhile, gold Trophies are for those playing through BioShock multiple times. "Brass Balls" will be awarded to anyone who beats the game on hard with Vita-Chambers (respawn points) turned off.

Finally the coveted BioShock Platinum Trophy will be reserved for those who can "take down a Big Daddy without shivering", which presumably means losing no health.

Trophies were recently added in a PS3 firmware update and are gradually appearing across a number of titles. You can collect these and show them to your friends in PlayStation Home, whenever that virtual dream is finally realised.

BioShock PS3 will be out sometime this October and is also receiving exclusive downloadable content in the form of Challenge Rooms. These are puzzle-based and have you solving problems using Plasmids, those super-power abilities you inject in-game.

I thought the platinum trophies were for completing all other trophies in the game?

Nah, they're the top ranking hardest trophy to achieve. Like completing Bioshock using just the left analogue gets you the PSP Platinum Trophy.

According to the official webpage where they are discussing the new trophies:
http://www.2kgames.com/cultofrapture/ins...

"Additionally, there is one platinum Trophy per title, which is automatically unlocked after you've earned every other Trophy."

Yes, the quote is misleading. Platinum is awarded once all the other trophies are collected.

Yes indeed. And also of course the Trophies are visible immediately when you select a user in the XMB and you can compare them with yours or vice versa, and of course you can do this in-game these days also. But we all knew that of course. ;)

Sorry what titles apart from SS:HD support trophies?

And how is this any different from XBox's achievements system?

Sound like the achievements on 360. No bad thing, although they had a little bit of repetition here and there.

The kill big daddy without losing health sounds actually not that hard. I mean later on, you're a walking tank yourself....

Slightly different to achievements as its tiered, so you get rewarded so to speak for nailing the harder stuff

The only trophy worth mentioning here is 2K's ability to 'sell' a year old game to Sony and make it sound like it's a fantastic thing to happen to the PS3.

Don't forget, dear buyers, that this is a tech demo for 2K - nothing more; it's their test bed to see if they can cut code on the P3 Cell processor...nothing more.

Oh, that sure destroyed any buyer's pleasure in playing the game.

ffs, some people need to get over their console.

Trophies/ Achievements make me laugh. Is it really more fun to do X if there is a text message on the bottom of the screen indicating "you have done X"? If so, perhaps time to play a better game.

Platinum trophies were supposed to be only for completion of games, if developers can do whatever they want it won't be long before some people boost their level up.
By the way, killing a Big Daddy without taking a hit is pretty easy once you have the right plasmids and skills. I remember killing one in under 3 seconds :)

If I can stand over a Big Daddy and not see low-LOD, followed a few seconds later by medium-LOD ... followed another few seconds later by the high-LOD, then I'll actually buy this game for a second time.

Yes, trophies are essentially as pointless as achievements, but I have four times as many chums with a PS3 as 360 and I like pointless ... I played F.E.A.R. for PS3! Well, that's just pain I suppose :-s

I think the levelling up with trophies needs more fanfare, though (and getting Platinum).
