Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon - Route 8, Lush Jungle, Captain Mallow's Trial, Totem Lurantis and Grassium Z

A walkthrough for the second island of your Alolan Island Challenge.

Route 8, followed closely by Captain Mallow's Trial, Totem Fomantis and Grassium Z are the final trial-related challenges you'll face on Akala, before you head off in search of kahuna Olivia and the other challenges ahead...

Here on this page we'll explain all you need to know about the story and main events as they unfold here, and as with all pages of our walkthrough we'll highlight any and all trainers, items and wild Pokémon available to catch as well.

For more general guides and other walkthrough pages like this meanwhile, head back to our main Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon walkthrough and guide hub.

Route 8

Before your trial with Captain Mallow, there's one long - if simple - route ahead of you. Route 8 features a smattering of wild Pokémon but a fair few trainers, including a 'Route kahuna' who wants you to come back when you've beaten all of them.

There's also a small Aether Foundation research facilty here, featuring that Vuplix you rescued from Team Skull back in Paniola Town! If you return to it each day, bringing a Big Malasada with you, it'll eventually be restored to full health.

Otherwise, the Ultra Recon Squad are the first things you encounter as you exit Dividng Peak Tunnel, as is a chap called Colress, whom you may have already met in previous Pokémon games...

TRAINERS POKEMON ITEMS

There's also an interesting Pokémon interaction here. Working the same as in regular Sun and Moon, you can catch a Wimpod on the rocky shore to the south-west of the route. If you approach it head-on, it'll always flee into a hole in the rocks before you catch it.

What you need to do is ride Lapras out onto the water, circle around the rocks - past the pair of martial arts trainers - to get to the north end of the beach, then you can approach it from that side to corner it when it tries to flee! Be aware, too, that if you get it below fifty per cent health in battle it'll automatically run - best to put this one to sleep or paralyze it and try to catch it at full health!

Clear out the route of trainers, items and Pokémon, then head on to Lush Jungle by heading west, south and then east again towards the top of Route 5!

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon Lush Jungle, Mallow's Trial, Totem Lurantis and Grassium Z

Mallows Trial is quite a bit simpler than regular Sun and Moon's. You need to collect three ingredients from the plants in Lush Jungle: a Mago Berry, some Honey, and a Big Root.

The Mago Berry is from the tree in the first area Mallow takes you, the Honey from a flowery bush in the next, and the Big Root from the Sudowoodo trees in the final area.

You'll probably get followed by three Pokémon - a Fomantis, a Cottonee, and a Sudowoodo - and they'll attack you when you get back to Mallow. After them (they're all pretty simple) it's time for the battle with Totem Lurantis, which is purely Grass-type but boosts its Speed with its Totam Aura, which can be tricky.

Hit it with Paralysis if possible to slow it down, then Fire, Flying, Ice and Poison attacks will all do heavy damage.

Next up: Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon - Dimensional Research Lab, Diglett's Tunnel and Route 9

You'll get the Grassium Z for defeating it, and that's you done with the Trials on Akala! Time to go hunt down Olivia, the island kahuna, at Konikoni City through Diglett Tunnel - so flying to Heahea City is your next stop!
