Rocktoice and The Cry of Its Power Hunt location and requirements

Before you get to the actual battle, here's everything you need to know about Rocktoice and The Cry of Its Power Hunt:

  • Prerequisites: complete Barheim Passage.
  • Recommended level: 18+
  • Petitioner location: Khus Skyground, Bhujerba.
  • Mark location: Site 2, Lhusu Mine
  • Reward: 1200 Gil, Hi-Potion, Heavy Coat

The petitioner is the Moogle sitting on near the steps to the south in the small area on the west of Bhujerba. Talk to him, then head for the cave at the far end of Lhusu Mine where you went on your failed attempt to rescue Penelo.

Rocktoice strategies and how to defeat it

The Rocktoise has two lines of protection: high natural defence, and the help of skeletons spawning in. His attacks are mostly short range and he's weak to Aero, so using ranged or magic attacks will help avoid most of his damage. When the skeletons spawn focus on eliminating them as they're a nuisance and can chip away at your health if you're not careful - remember that Undead can be killed with healing spells - but other than that it's a case of staying alive and chipping away at him.

You can cheese the fight at a lower level by standing in the doorway with a ranged character wearing gear that provides high magic resistance (equip the Goddesses Magicite if you have it) and one other character that does nothing but heal. The Rocktoise physically can't get close enough to hit you so will resort to magic, but the amount of damage he deals is minimal and even a low-level healer should be able to cover the damage whilst also dealing with the Undead menace. It will probably take a long time as ranged weapons are generally less powerful than melee, but you'll get there in the end.

Head back and collect your reward, although it's a little underwhelming for such a big enemy - if you have a character that can wear the Heavy Coat it may be better than your current equipment, but by now it's probably just suitable for selling.
