Pokémon Sun and Moon - Route 1, Iki Town Festival, Professor Kukui's Lab

Our complete walkthrough for every step of your latest Pokémon journey.

Now you've had your first Pokémon battle at Iki Town and headed home for the night, it's time to get going to the festival. The next day, after that rather eventful first one in Alola, Kukui turns up at your home again.

This time, via Route 1, the Iki Town Festival, and Professor Kukui's Lab, you'll be learning how to catch Pokémon, making your own way as a proper Pokémon trainer, and starting your adventure for real.

Route 1 - catch your first wild Pokémon and head north

Route 1 is a small route between your house and Iki Town, which you got a glimpse of yesterday with Professor Kukui. Today, after he arrives again at your home, it's time to learn how to catch Pokémon, and then navigate the route on your own for the first time.

There's not much else to do on Route 1 other than catch the available Pokémon, battle the few trainers that are there, and collect the available items scattered around. Practice your catching technique - it's a little harder this gen! - and train a little if you like, but there's no need to grind for now. Head north to Iki Town again for the Festival when you're ready.

Iki Town Festival - battle with Hau and earn the Z Ring

Once you reach Iki Town, it's time for the festival... which turns out to be a battle! It's in order to honer the guardian, Tapu Koko, and involves another one against your pal Hau, who has some new Pokémon! As it turns out, Hau isn't just some random trainer, either, he's Kahuna Hala's grandson with aspirations of one day being an island Kahuna himself.

Before you battle, Hala gives you back that Sparkling Stone... in the form of a Z Ring! You'll need a Z Crystal to use it though, which you don't have just yet. Make sure your Pokémon are all healed up, and you've caught one or two outside of your starter, then take on Hau.

Heading south to Kukui's Lab

The next day, it's Lillie's turn to arrive unexpectedly at your front door, and this time she wants to take you southwards, to Kukui's lab. Head downwards from your house onto the short route, until you hit the beach.

You'll find an entrance to Ten Carat Hill, down at the bottom left of the beach area. But it's blocked off for now, so you're best off collecting, catching, and defeating what you can before heading in to see Prof. Kukui.

Inside, Kukui gives you a little more info about his studies and the region of Alola in particular, and also tells you something interesting about that Pokédex of yours... it's a Pokémon, Rotom! It's a new version, known as the Rotom Dex, and can now talk to you, guiding you through your journey with something resembling sentience for the first time in the series.

Get accquainted with your new friend, and then head on up to Hau'oli City, the island's main hub and your next destination. North to your house the way you came, then due west to the city!
