Ultra Street Fighter 2 on Nintendo Switch costs £35
Can't you do better than that?
Back in early March, Capcom revealed a $39.99 price for Ultra Street Fighter 2 on Nintendo Switch. At the time I asked Capcom for a UK price, but the company couldn't say what it would cost on these shores as the price would be set by retail (this is a common response when it comes to Nintendo games because the company was hit by an enormous price-fixing fine by the European Commission back in 2002).
So, I've kept an eye on retail listings since then, and have noticed we've now got a UK price: £34.99.
Now, £35 is going to set all sorts of alarm bells ringing. I get that. What a ridiculous price for a port of the Xbox 360 / PlayStation 3 version of Super Street Fighter 2 HD Remix, which came out in 2008! I'm with you. But in the interests of fairness, I should run through exactly what you get with this game, due out in May.
This is the newest iteration of Street Fighter 2 in nearly 10 years. It's a new version of Ultra Street Fighter 2, so includes all the classic characters. But there's some proper new stuff, too.
Ultra Street Fighter 2 features Evil Ryu and Violent Ken. Violent Ken, by the way, has never been in a main Street Fighter game before. So he's new.
You can choose between classic pixel-art graphics or the more modern look. Not an entirely new feature, but there it is.
There are a decent number of modes, including Arcade Mode (eat your heart out, Street Fighter 5). Buddy Mode, which lets two players join forces to take on the computer, is brand new. You can even create two-character combos.
There's a new colour editor, which lets you customise the colour scheme of the characters. The gallery includes over 1400 illustrations from throughout Street Fighter's 30-year history, taken from the out-of-print Street Fighter Artworks: Supremacy book.
And there's a brand new first-person mode called Way of the Hado, which sees players try to defeat a Shadaloo army using Hadouken and Shoryuken movements while waggling the Joy-cons.
I feel like it's also important to put the price of Street Fighter 2 on Switch into context. Bomberman R is £44 on Amazon. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is £42. Zelda is £48. So perhaps we should consider Street Fighter 2 on Switch a bargain at £35.
So there you have it. A justifiable price, or yet another Switch game rip-off?
