Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Captured Memories locations and how to get every Recovered Memory

Where to find all flashbacks dotted around Hyrule for the optional main quest.

Zelda: Breath of the Wild's Captured Memories are an optional main quest that you can pick up early on in the adventure after you complete Locked Momentos.

Impa tasks you with visiting 12 sites around Hyrule, with nothing but photos to help guide you. When you figure out their location, you'll find a glowing yellow aura that will trigger a flashback from Link's previous adventures.

Finding these will then unlock one final 13th memory, which in turn also adds a bonus scene to the game's ending. There's also five story-specific memories to find which you'll unlock as you complete the Divine Beasts and Master Sword.

If you're after help for parts of the game, consult our Zelda: Breath of the Wild walkthrough and guide. You can also head over to our sister-site Jelly Deals if you like and have a look at their top picks for the best Zelda merchandise available right now.

Captured Memory locations in Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Below is the full order of Captured Memories in the game, as listed in the 'Memories' section in the game's Adventure Log, which orders each flashback in chronological order.

Note that five are encountered through story events in the game, and the penultimate Memory is locked until you find all 12 Memories out in the wild.

This gallery is your primary clue to finding 12 Captured Memories out in the wild, and is ordered differently to how they appear in the Adventure Log, which we follow in this article. We have included these photos alongside each entry to make it clear how each refer to one another.

If you were interested in how you might be able to find these without a guide, then Pikango - the artist that helps you find the first Fairy Mountain - can be found in a variety of Stables throughout Hyrule. Speak to him and he'll point you in the direction of the nearest Memory.

You can, of course, skip this step and head straight there if you know where to look, which is where the following list comes in handy.

Captured Memory 01 - Subdued Ceremony

This is in the Sacred Ground Ruins in front of Hyrule Castle in the centre of the map. While not hard to find, it can be tricky to get to as the Central Tower region is filled with Guardians and other nasties.

We recommend gliding north east from the Central Tower and walking over, and being prepared to fight (here we explain the shield parrying technique to beat Guardians easily) or flee past enemies along the way.

Captured Memory 02 - Revali's Flap

You'll unlock this as part of completing Divine Beast Vah Medoh.

Captured Memory 03 - Resolve and Grief

This is west of Lake Kolomo, which itself is just north of the Great Plateau, the game's starting area.

The easiest way to get there is to warp to the Oman Au Shrine on the Great Plateau, then glide over, where it's on the outskirts of the forest.

Captured Memory 04 - Daruk's Mettle

You'll unlock this as part of completing Divine Beast Vah Rudiana.

Memory 05 - Zelda's Resentment

As the photo suggests, this is not far from the flying Divine Beast Vah Medoh. It's on some cliffs named the Ancient Columns that's south of Tabantha Tower.

We recommend gliding south from the Tower to Piper Ridge, then gliding south again and climbing the cliff up. Be sure to activate the Tena Ko'sah Shrine while you're there, too for a useful fast travel point if you wish to come back later.

Captured Memory 06 - Urbosa's Hand

You'll unlock this as part of completing Divine Beast Vah Naboris.

Captured Memory 07 - Blades of the Yiga

This can be found at Kara Kara Bazaar, the settlement in the northern half of the Gerudo Desert in the south west corner of the map.

It's easiest collected when you visit Gerudo Town for the Vah Naboris Divine Beast, but if you want to get it early, then activate Wasteland Tower, and fly west. The Memory is just to the north east side of the oasis.

Captured Memory 08 - A Premonition

This is on a rocky outcrop to the south west of Death Mountain in the north east corner of the map.

It's a little tricky to get to - we recommend heading to Woodland Stable that's on the lower right part of the Woodland region, there there's a road that goes into the foot of the mountains.

Take the valley up, and climb up the first cliff to your left to see a circle of stones. Now go north, climbing up more cliffs, and you should come across another circle of stones, which is where our Memory awaits.

Captured Memory 09 - Silent Princess

This can be found north west of Hyrule Castle, across the moat and just south of Salari Hill and Irch Plain.

We recommend going to Ridgeland Tower to the west and gliding to the north east, where there are two bodies of water. In between those, on an upper ridge, are two trees. The Memory is just a few steps west.

Captured Memory 10 - Mipha's Touch

You'll unlock this as part of completing Divine Beast Vah Ruta.

Captured Memory 11 - Shelter from the Storm

This one is south west of the Dueling Peaks region and not far from the Great Plateau.

Head to the Bosh Kala shrine which is south of Proxim Bridge, and cross to the east side. Now head down, and not far from the border to the next region, it'll be visible on the cliff side next to an elevated piece of earth and a tree.

Captured Memory 12 - Father and Daughter

Set just outside Princess Zelda's Study in the grounds of Hyrule Castle, and so is the most dangerous and difficult Memory to find of all, but provided you have the Zora Armor from Zora's Domain, you're able to swim up waterfalls and make the journey both combat free and reasonably fast.

Head to the north east side of the castle, and take the waterfalls to the very top, where there is a rocky outcrop to you right. Head right round the back of the castle, past the turret Guardian on the wall (sprint past and you'll avoid its laser before it has a chance to fire) and you'll come to a sheltered path way.

Climb onto the outside wall and up the cliff, using the ledges as a place to rest, until you come to the top and the back of the Sanctum area of the castle.

Make your way around the body of the castle. On the west side, there is a tall turret that stands apart from the castle itself. This is Princess Zelda's Study, and from this vantage point, you can glide down onto the walkway in front of it, where the memory is located.

Captured Memory 13 - Slumbering Power

This can be found in the Spring of Power in the Akkala region in the far north east of the map.

If you head to the East Akkala Stable that's on the way to the Ankkala Ancient Tech Lab, go directly west and you should find the spring sunk into the ground. The memory is on a plinth in front of the water.

Captured Memory 14 - To Mount Lanayru

You'll find this in Sanidin Park Ruins in the south of the Ridgeland Tower region.

The easiest way to reach it is to head to Outskirt Stable - which is north west on the road from the Great Plateau, if you leave by Hopper Pond - and follow the road north, over Manhala Bridge, turn right, and you'll run into the Park as you continue on the road.

The memory itself is in front of the statue.

Captured Memory 15 - Return of Calamity Ganon

You'll find this at Lanayru Road - East Gate, which is west of Mount Lanayru on the east side of the map.

We found warping to Jitan Sa'mi Shrine at the Shrine of Wisdom on Mount Lanayru (which, without spoiling, is one of the best Shrines in the game and worth doing if you haven't already) then gliding west to where the valley opens up.

Drop down at the first gate, and the Memory is just beyond. Be warned - drop too early and there will be a Lynel waiting!

Captured Memory 16 - Despair

The Memory is positioned between Hyrule Field and Lanayru Wetlands in the centre of the map.

The easiest way to get there is to warp to Wetland Stable's Kaya Wan Shrine to the north, cross the river and head left, where there is a forest underneath a cliff north of the Bottomless Swamp.

In the middle of this forest you'll find the Memory.

Captured Memory 17 - Zelda's Awakening

This Memory will become available once you have captured all 12 main Captured Memories and spoken to Impa, who will give you the clue of its location from a painting on the wall.

To find it, east of Ha Dahamar Shrine and Dueling Peaks Stable and towards Hateno Fort, through the sea of ruined Guardians. The memory is close to the center of the battlefield.

Captured Memory 18 - The Master Sword

You'll unlock this as part of collecting the Master Sword from the Lost Woods.

It's chronologically the final Memory of the game, so might be best left until you find the others if you want to watch them in order. Enjoy!
