The best weapons in Fallout 4: Far Harbor

There are two types of RPG players: those who want to be told a story, and the grinders - those on the endless hunt for marginally better gear. The former might class Knights of the Old Republic among the role-playing greats, while the latter would probably rather spend hours battling through the dungeons of Diablo 3.

A list of the best guns from Fallout 4's coastal chunk of DLC might appeal to the latter group more immediately, but the people who are just there for the story really should pay attention - after all, is any video game story actually better than the one created by you removing the head of a Super Mutant with a Fat Man-fired bowling ball? That's a rhetorical question, obviously.

So if you're looking for the homicidal hardware to give you an edge on the irradiated island of Far Harbor, this guide has you covered. Whether you want to cripple legs with a flamer, mush enemies to pulp with the most powerful melee weapon in the game, or if you just want to pepper enemies with the raddest explosive rifle, read on.

Sergeant Ash

Roleplay as a murderous Sir Alan Sugar with Sergeant Ash, a special flamer that lets you melt enemies' faces while quipping 'you're fired' and laughing maniacally. What makes this weapon unique isn't just its great name - it comes complete with a 20% chance to cripple a target's legs, which would probably be a thing that would happen if your actual legs were on fire.

The Harvester

If you've been playing a bit too much new-Doom and now every virtual fight you get in needs to be accompanied by vats of viscera, this might be the weapon for you. This unique ripper variant does what it says on the tin, harvesting the limbs from the bodies of its victims with a sickening squelch. Additionally, there's a chance to stagger with every hit, leaving the enemy open to its chugging, mechanical bicycle chain of death.

Head to former lumber mill Echo Lake Chamber and go to the largest building. It's hidden in a trunk upstairs behind an advanced locked door.

December's Child

December's Child is aesthetically confusing but functionally pleasing. It's a rifle that fires 5.56mm rounds instead of the usual .45 ammunition. It also looks like it should be a shotgun, but it's mounted with a sight. It's brisk, too, boasting a 25% faster fire-rate and a reload speed that's 15% quicker than the norm.

Find December's Child inside the VIM! Pop Factory, up the elevator where you dig up DiMA's secret in the main quests. You need to take Nick Valentine along and you will be granted access into a small medical room - the rifle can be found within.

Admiral's Friend

The harpoon gun is one of the completely new toys that come with the Far Harbor expansion, and Admiral's Friend is the best one you can get. Harpoon guns are extremely slow to reload, but fortunately the Admiral's Friend only needs one shot for many regular enemies. If a target is at full health, this weapon does double damage - now imagine what a successful sneak attack does. It's essential for anyone with an aggressive stealth character.

You can buy this gun from Allen almost as soon as you arrive in Far Harbor, providing you've got the caps.

The Striker

If you thought firing a regular Fat-Man launcher armed with mini-nukes was fun, wait until you load one with bowling balls and remove someone's head from their shoulders with a well-placed shot. Have you seen Mel Gibson's The Patriot? That cannonball scene, basically. Sometimes a successful hit is accompanied by a 'strike' sound, which makes it all the more satisfying. Of course, you do need to find some bowling balls to keep stocked up on ammo. Reading a terminal near its location does allow you to craft modified bowling balls, however.

Head up into the staff area in Beaver Creek Lanes and it can be found in an upstairs office.

Lucky Eddy

Lever-action rifles are another new addition to Fallout 4 via Far Harbor, giving you an accurate option at mid-to-long-range, but with a quick firing speed thanks to that five-round tube magazine. Lucky Eddy makes you feel like a cowboy and gives you the bonus of +2 Luck, hence the name.

Unfortunately you need to get to the end of the DLC and complete The Way Life Should Be, siding with Allen in Far Harbor itself, to get this piece.

Atom's Judgement

This isn't just an ordinary super sledge, Atom's Judgement is one of the most powerful melee weapons in the entire game. It's a huge, hulking thing, with four cracked fusion cores embedded into its head, leaking irradiated gloop all over the weapon which adds +100 radiation damage with each smoky-trailed swing.

Complete The Heretic for Grand Zealot Richter in the Nucleus to be awarded this beast.

Kiloton Radium Rifle

Radium rifles are powerful enough - each shot blasting enemies with an atomic attack - but the Kiloton Radium Rifle goes one step further, adding explosive damage to each round. So not only does each shot do 50 points of radiation damage, but there's also the added bonus of that sweet 15 points of area-of-effect explosive pain to go with it. As an all-rounder, it's one of the most effective ranged weapons in the game.
