Destiny leak reveals next expansion Rise of Iron

Meanwhile, Destiny 2 has been "rebooted".

This autumn's Destiny expansion is called Rise of Iron, a fresh leak has revealed.

Artwork obtained by Kotaku shows Iron Banner boss Lord Saladin centre stage, in a location that looks a lot like Earth's Cosmodrome wall.

As expected, Rise of Iron contains a new raid and will weigh in around the same size as last year's The Taken King.

The expansion's title suggests we may see more of the Lords of Iron, who give their name to Destiny's monthly Iron Banner player-versus-player event.

Rise of Iron has been conjured up as a late replacement for a full-blown Destiny sequel. Destiny 2 was delayed earlier this year, when Bungie boss Harold Ryan was replaced. This new report states the sequel was "rebooted" at the same time, Bungie staff reshuffled, and The Taken King architect Luke Smith now placed at the helm.

Exactly what this means is hard to tell. Destiny 2 is now due for a (likely September) 2017 arrival - which seems too soon for the game to be completely rebuilt.

More likely, Destiny 2 is now getting the same treatment given to Destiny 1 - where its story, missions and main characters were rewritten, following a similar year delay prior to launch.

Destiny's development continues to remain troubled, then. This latest report suggests the Rise of Iron raid is loosely based on one originally intended for launch in last year's House of Wolves DLC (UPDATE: Kotaku has now clarified this is not the case). The content was then repurposed for a new raid designed to launch last month, before being pushed back further.

It remains to be seen what else Bungie will provide Destiny fans with come September. There have been reports of a half-built Mars area cut from The Taken King, plus long-scrapped plans which date back to an earlier idea for two extra DLC packs to be sold this year.

Rise of Iron is set to launch this September. We'll see our first official glimpse of it at E3 next month, likely as part of Sony's press conference.
