Final Fantasy 9 is "coming soon" to PC, iOS and Android

UPDATE: PC version offers "no encounter modes".

UPDATE 06/01/2016 7.15pm: Final Fantasy 9's Steam release will offer "seven game boosters including high speed and no encounter modes," i.e. you'll be able to turn off random encounters, arguably one of the biggest bugbears of old JRPGs.

It's unclear if this feature will extend to the mobile releases.

There's still no word on when it's out beyond "early 2016".

ORIGINAL STORY 05/01/2016 12.31am: Final Fantasy 9 is getting a re-release on PC, iOS and Android devices, publisher Square Enix has announced.

No release date has been confirmed beyond a general "coming soon" tease on its official site.

Released in 2000 on the original PlayStation, Final Fantasy 9 has gone on to sell 5m copies. It even has secrets so obscure that one entire sidequest wasn't discovered until 13 years after its launch.

This will be Final Fantasy 9's first re-release outside of PS3 where it became available digitally as a PSone Classic in 2010.
