US Xbox One sales rise but PlayStation 4 still top

PS4 leads hardware chart for eighth consecutive month.

Xbox One sales rose during August in the US and nearly doubled the number of consoles sold over July, Microsoft has said.

This was in part due to the launch of a Madden NFL 15 Xbox One console bundle, but also likely helped by Microsoft's generous new 'Buy a Console Get a Game Free' promotion (thanks, VentureBeat).

But the latest figures from US numbers company NPD show that PlayStation 4 is still outselling the Xbox One by some margin.

The PS4 was again top of the US hardware chart - now for the eighth consecutive month - while the PS4 version of NFL 15 topped the software chart.

New release Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls Ultimate Edition sold more on PS4 than on Xbox One, while The Last of Us: Remastered was the best-selling first-party title on any format.

But whichever format you've chosen, there was good news for the console market in general. Combined PlayStation 4 and Xbox One sales are currently 70 per cent higher than combined PS3 and Xbox 360 sales after the same amount of time (10 months) on the market.
