PS4 passes 1m sales mark in the UK

Second fastest-selling home console ever, just behind Wii.

The PlayStation 4 has sold one million units in the UK, Sony has announced. 10m PS4s have been sold worldwide.

It achieved the milestone nine months after going on sale in November 2013. It is the second fastest-selling home console ever - Nintendo's Wii achieved one million sales in 38 weeks.

Sony UK boss Fergal Gara told Eurogamer the one million sales were through to customers, and the figure was based on official Chart-Track data.

PlayStation 3 took 46 weeks to hit 1m, the PS2 took 50 weeks and the Xbox 360 took 60 weeks.

"Wii got there ever so slightly faster," Gara said, "but it's the fastest versus any PlayStation or Xbox - so any core gamer machine."

Gara added PS4 sales were "significantly" ahead of expectations, and while there were supply issues up to April this year, he does not anticipate a supply shortage this Christmas.

"Our biggest problem last Christmas was our forecasts were more modest at the time when we started calling things like manufacturing capacity," he said. "So while the team did a brilliant job of getting us more than we thought we would need at Christmas, it still wasn't enough.

"We started with a forecast. We saw pre-orders coming through. We increased the forecast. We got most of that volume but not enough, and the demand just kept going. It was only April when we started to catch the demand. So in short, way ahead. I'm expecting both a very strong sales Christmas and healthy volumes this Christmas. I don't anticipate any consumer problems."

So how is PS4 doing compared to competitor Xbox One in the UK? Eurogamer understands the sales ratio to be 1.5:1, so if PS4 has sold 1m, then Xbox One has sold around 666,666.
