Diablo 3 - Gambling, how to get Blood Shards, set pieces and legendary items

Everything you need to know about the new gambling system in Diablo 3, from getting hold of more Blood Shards to prioritising your dice-rolls.

If you've moved into Adventure Mode at Level 70, then the Gambler can be a fantastic source of early end-game gear. Simply take the Blood Shards you receive from clearing Bounties, approach Kadala back at camp, choose a category of equipment and hope you get lucky. Get really lucky, and you might even get that elusive Legendary pr Set item you've been hunting down.

Gambling categories

There are three categories to choose from when spending your shards: Weapons, Armor and Trinkets. Different sub-categories of equipment exist within these broader sets, so pick an item slot you need to fill and have a roll of the dice.

Prioritising items at the Gambler

Nicely rolled Rings and Amulets can be some of the toughest items to come by during regular farming, so we recommend throwing all of your Blood Shards into these categories until you have at least above average items for these slots (see our individual class guides for more details on preparing for Torment difficulty.) Just be aware that these items cost more shards than most of the others.

Gambling in bulk

Many people have wondered if there is an advantage to spending huge amounts of Blood Shards in one sitting, as though to eliminate certain items from the potential loot table. Blizzard has, however, confirmed that bulk buying does not influence the likelihood of receiving a broader range of items across your spending spree. There are practical limitations to consider when bulk-buying, of course, as you only have so much inventory space to use - perhaps one day Kadala will at least let you sell her rubbish back to her for gold...

Obtaining Blood Shards

You've a few ways of getting hold of Blood Shards. First of all, complete lots of Bounties, and do so on Expert or higher difficulty. You'll also get bonus Blood Shards for finishing the two acts on your world map that are marked 'Bonus'. The two Acts selected for these bonus rewards are randomly selected each time you start a new game.

You'll also get a nice bundle of shards for each of the Rift Guardians you destroy, and you can also get a cluster of them out of the Horadric Caches gifted to you by Tyrael for clearing out every Bounty in an Act.

Set and Legendary items

It is possible to obtain all of the top tier Set and Legendary items through the Gambler, but you may have to spend many hundreds of shards to see even a terrible Legendary! Still, those Blood Shards can't be used for anything else, so if you're hunting specific items for their set bonus effects, you might as well be spending them in that category - particularly if you're pretty well-geared in general.
