Diablo 3 Blacksmith tips - How to unlock Haedrig Eamon and track down Ascended items

Everything you need to know about Haedrig the Blacksmith, from levelling up to salvaging items, and tracking down Ascended gear for crafting.

Bring the right materials - along with a little gold - to Haedrig Eamon, Diablo 3's Blacksmith, and he'll help you craft powerful weapons and armour using the crafting plans you randomly loot as you play the game. He can also help you turn unwanted items into raw ingredients through the salvaging system, which allows you to recycle your unwanted goods into something a little more useful for your character.

Unlocking Haedrig Eamon

You'll first encounter Haedrig very early on in the game's opening Act. Once you've completed his introductory quest, you'll always be able to find him somewhere in the camp you're currently occupying.

Salvaging items at the Blacksmith

If you're not short of cash and you'd rather trade your looted equipment in for some precious crafting materials, you can haul your ill-gotten gains over to Haedrig. He'll then smash them down into their component parts, leaving you free to put them to more efficient use as newly crafted items. The more valuable the item you sacrifice, the more valuable the crafting component you'll receive for doing so.

How to track down Ascended items

Some of the most powerful items available through the Blacksmith's crafting system require so-called Ascended items as part of the recipe. These very basic items can often be found in chests or weapon and armour racks. Act 5 in particular is stuffed to the brim with these low-level items, so smash every box and loot every rack you come across if you're hunting down a specific piece.

If you find any Ascended items as you play through the game, try to avoid selling them. Instead, dedicate part of your stash to storing them. You never know what you may wish to make in the future - perhaps for another character - and you can be sure it'll be the one ingredient that never seems to drop when you need it!

Blacksmith crafting explained

If you're lucky enough to loot a Plan while you play the game, pay a visit to Haedrig, stand next to him, open up his crafting interface if playing on PC, and then simply tap the recipe you picked up. It'll now be added to his collection. Read through the item description carefully before spending your precious materials on a craft. You'll be given some vague indication of the type of stats that will roll during the crafting process, but you may have to craft the same item many times until you get the perfect piece of gear for your character and skill build.
