Super Smash Bros. for Wii U will make use of NFC toys

Plus, Fire Emblem's Ike confirmed to return.

The upcoming Wii U version of Super Smash Bros. will support Nintendo's recently-announced NFC toy range.

That's according to Nintendo France boss Stephan Bole, who confirmed the matter to French newspaper Le Figaro.

"E3 is also an opportunity to show the use of NFC technology in Nintendo consoles," he explained. "The NFC will be used in the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros."

The news comes as no great surprise - Nintendo has said that Wii U games will begin interacting with the Nintendo Figurine Platform (NFP) this year. It sounds like the toy range and Smash Bros. are due for release around the same time.

"What is especially unique about NFP is that it is not classed as an accessory product of a certain software title but as a platform itself," Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata previously explained.

"In other words, the figurines, which consumers can buy and collect, are going to work with multiple software titles to be released in the future, and we are aiming to develop more software titles compatible with the figurines."

Exactly how it will work, what the figures will look like and what you'll actually unlock in Smash Bros. are questions due to be answered next month at E3.

Today also saw the confirmation of another returning Smash Bros. character - Fire Emblem's Ike, who previously appeared in the franchise's Wii incarnation, Brawl.

The character's design has been updated to that of his appearance in Wii game Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn - he's been on the protein shakes and is more muscular now.
