Upcoming Super Smash Bros. to include playable female Animal Crossing villagers

But there's no sign of the Able Sisters.

Nintendo's stable of iconic characters isn't the most diverse cast you could imagine, but the Kyoto-based company is making an effort to rate higher on the Bechdel test by adding more playable female characters to its upcoming Super Smash Bros. title on Wii U and 3DS.

Series director Masahiro Sakurai announced in a Miiverse comment that you'll be able to play as female villagers from Animal Crossing. "You can choose to play as the girl villager too!! How lovely," the director exclaimed.

The Animal Crossing villagers may look cute, but they fight dirty.

Other female characters in the upcoming game include Mario Princesses Rosalina and Peach, Zelda's alter ego Sheik, Samus, and the Wii Fit Trainer - who is available in both sexes.

The women residents of Animal Crossing is definitely a step in the right direction after Nintendo's horrible PR kerfuffle regarding Tomodachi Life's lack of same-sex relationships.
