Massively addictive minimalist high-score game Flappy Bird is coming back in August with multiplayer, according to a series of tweets by CNBC.

Flappy Bird will fly across the narrow sea and reclaim its throne.

CNBC correspondent Kelly Evans tweeted "Flappy Bird's Dong Nguyen: Flappy Bird is coming back. Multiplayer. August." The official CNBC Twitter account verified this news in a further tweet.

CNBC producer Donna Burton added, "Flappybird creator says he is creating lots of #games. Next one guy jumping from building to buildings."

The simplistic one-button tapper was released last May by Vietnamese indie developer Dong Nguyen, but it didn't become popular until January this year. Unfortunately, it became a little too popular and Nguyen felt it was damaging society and hurting people's lives. "It happened to become an addictive product. I think it has become a problem," he said in an interview with Forbes back in February. "To solve that problem, it's best to take down Flappy Bird. It's gone forever."

Flappy Bird's disappearance led to an immediate surge of clones to flood the App Store in a Game of Thrones-esque war to become the new king of distracting millions with bewilderingly simple gameplay. Yet there can only be one true Flappy Bird and phones with the game already installed were being sold on eBay in hopes of becoming collectors' items. That may not work out as planned if Flappy Bird reclaims its spot on the App Store this summer.

We've requested comment from Nguyen on why he's decided to bring Flappy Bird back from the dead. Perhaps he saw multiplayer as a way to bring people together? We'll update as we find out more.
