Microsoft warns Xbox One owners about backwards compatibility prank

"There is no way to make your Xbox One backwards compatible."

Microsoft has warned Xbox One owners about an internet prank that claimed the console could be made to play Xbox 360 games.

Pranksters at 4Chan created an image designed to look like official Microsoft messaging with instructions on how to make the Xbox One backwards compatible. The instructions, if followed, could break your Xbox One. But that didn't prevent it from gaining traction on Twitter.

Now, Microsoft has responded. "To be clear there is no way to make your Xbox One backwards compatible & performing steps to attempt this could make your console inoperable," Xbox mouthpiece Major Nelson tweeted.

The prank riffed on this months' revelation that Xbox One owners could access the console's developer settings menu if they input a code.
