As reported by Kotaku, the port was just announced at a Square event earlier today. It won't be a straight port though, as Square director and producer Takashi Tokita noted it will be slightly altered to reduce grinding. "The battle systems have been altered for the other [mobile remakes] for Final Fantasy and 6 will be the same," he said. "For instance grinding was an issue and people had to spend a lot of time leveling up. Now on the mobile devices the battle systems have been adjusted so you don't have to fight as much and can enjoy the game for what it is."

Tokita noted that the graphics will still be 2D, but higher resolution as per Square's recent mobile version of Final Fantasy 5.

Final Fantasy 6 was originally released in 1994 in North America as Final Fantasy 3. It's since been ported to PlayStation and GameBoy advance.

Looking ahead, Tokita said if Square's upcoming 3D mobile remake of Final Fantasy 4: The After Years does well, he'd like to port the fan-favourite Final Fantasy 7 as well. "We are aware that we have tons of 7 fans," he noted. "We have 7 fans in our own company. If this Legacy project works out well, we would like to one day be able to work with 7."

That being said, he noted that there are some technical issues that would prevent this from being possible in the near future. "Technology-wise it would be very difficult to bring a games like Final Fantasy 7 and beyond from the PlayStation era [to mobile] - they require a lot more memory and processing speed," he told Polygon. "It could be something that is possible within the next few years. But as for the actual development of it, we just have to see how well [Legacy collection] does."
