You can earn both Xbox 360 and Xbox One achievements for the same game

If you have a copy on both formats.

You'll be able to earn two sets of achievements for cross-generational games if you own Xbox 360 and Xbox One copies, Microsoft has announced.

Microsoft's Xbox One exec Marc Whitten confirmed the fact to IGN last night.

"Every game has its own set of achievements, so if you're playing Call of Duty: Ghosts on Xbox 360 and on Xbox One, you can earn a separate set of Gamerscore in each game," he said.

"But on the Xbox One version, you're getting a much richer set of features, such as seeing your achievements progress on the Xbox One console, being able to unlock new achievements throughout the year, and earning real prizes inside and outside of the game."

Other Microsoft platforms don't share achievements, either. It means you can nab two lots of Plants vs. Zombies awards (XBLA and Windows Phone) or three lots of ilomilo Gamerscore (XBLA, Windows Phone and Windows 8).

Upcoming Xbox 360 and Xbox One cross-gen titles include Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, Call of Duty: Ghosts, FIFA 14, Need for Speed: Rivals and Watch Dogs.

Microsoft has yet to name a release date for Xbox One, but it's likely that at least some of the above titles will launch before Microsoft's next-gen console arrives.
