Star Citizen raises an astronomical $15 million

A space oddity.

Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts has raised an unthinkable $15 million in his crowdfunding effort to make the space trading and combat sim Star Citizen.

The upcoming title already held the record for the highest raising crowdfunded project of all time in June when it cruised past the $10 million mark, but it hasn't let up since. In fact, the crowdfunding effort just had its best month ever with $3,099,816 raised. Sheesh!

The $15 million stretch goal will fund the addition of escort carriers to the game. Every backer will receive a 42-page digital Upgrade Handbook manual detailing the process of customising and overclocking ship systems.

Looking ahead, at $16 million developer Roberts Space Industries will give every backer a laser pistol and add an Arena Mode, which is essential a gladiator-esque dogfighting tournament. Winners will receive credits for their victories and eventually a grand champion will be named.

The newly announced $17 million stretch goal will make it so all backers receive a ship upgrade package containing an engine modifier. Additionally, it will fund the development of the new Battlecruiser ship class.

The current Star Citizen crowdfunded tally comes to $15,077,622.
