Nosgoth set in Legacy of Kain universe, but Tomb Raider dev Crystal Dynamics not involved

UPDATE: Square Enix confirms Nosgoth is a multiplayer game.

UPDATE: Square Enix has confirmed that Nosgoth is a multiplayer game set in the Legacy of Kain universe.

A statement from Square Enix community manager George Kelion was sent to Eurogamer following the publication of the below report.

"We're aware that the community has been actively discussing rumours about a game currently in development called Nosgoth, after it was referenced in AMD's Crossfire Application Profile and the Steam database last week. While we can confirm that this game exists, is in active development and is set in the same universe as the Legacy of Kain games, it's not a traditional or even single-player LoK experience.

"Given the AMD and Steam leaks, it feels weird to have a bunch of info out there and we don't want the community to get the wrong idea, especially as the game won't be at this year's E3.

"We can also tell you that Nosgoth is not being developed by Crystal Dynamics, nor are they working on a Legacy of Kain game right now and while our game is set in the world of Nosgoth, it's very much on a separate branch to both the Soul Reaver and Blood Omen series.

"Sorry to be so cagey. There will be an official announcement in due course when we'll reveal Nosgoth properly, so we can't go into tons of detail just at the moment. Everyone at Square Enix is really excited by the game and we're all looking forward to lifting the veil of secrecy in the future.”

ORIGINAL STORY: Nosgoth, the game revealed by AMD and Steam leaks last month, is set in the Legacy of Kain universe, but Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics has nothing to do with it.

Nosgoth isn't a traditional Legacy of Kain action-adventure game, either, Square Enix told VG247. It's on a "different branch to the Blood Omen and Soul Reaver series", which suggests it's a multiplayer-focused title. A MOBA?

Square Enix will not announce Nosgoth at E3, it said. "We don't want people to get the wrong idea about Nosgoth following the AMD and Steam leaks ahead of its future official announcement. Nosgoth is not being developed by Crystal Dynamics," Square Enix said. "Crystal Dynamics are not working on a Legacy of Kain game".

So if Crystal Dynamics isn't making a Legacy of Kain game, what is it making? Another Tomb Raider? Back in June 2012 the studio discussed a new IP, saying it'll be "fresh and familiar" and offer a similar experience to the new Tomb Raider game.

At the time executive producer Scot Amos explained why the studio had embarked on the creation of a new IP. "We have all these great IP, now is a great time, looking at what's coming in the future, what's coming up in the console space, what's going to be happening next... Let's start now, with a blank page," he said.

"We take that kind of bold step of, let's make something new, something where we don't already have a finger in that particular pool, and let's try, from scratch, to make a new game with all of our abilities and skills. What would be a new great experience for our future?"
