Ron Gilbert exits Double Fine

Announces iOS side project Scurvy Scallywags in The Voyage to Discover the Ultimate Sea Shanty: A Musical Match-3 Pirate RPG.

Monkey Island and The Cave creator Ron Gilbert has left Double Fine, the studio helmed by his on-again off-again collaborator of two decades Tim Schafer.

DeathSpank creator and Law & Order aficionado Ron Gilbert.

With his last game The Cave already released, Gilbert stated that "It's time for me to move on from Double Fine and plot my next move," on his Grumpy Gamer blog.

"So many games left to be designed," he added.

On that note, he announced that he and DeathSpank co-creator Clayton Kauzlaric are toiling away on an iOS side project entitled Scurvy Scallywags in The Voyage to Discover the Ultimate Sea Shanty: A Musical Match-3 Pirate RPG. Gilbert said he'll be posting screenshots of it in the next few days.

Despite Gilbert's departure, he noted that there's no animosity between him and Schafer - or anyone at Double Fine. "I want to thank all the amazing people at Double Fine for all their hard work on The Cave," he said. "It was a true pleasure to work with every one of them over the past two years. So much fun. I will miss them all. And of course to Tim for creating the opportunity to come there and make The Cave."

For more information on Ron Gilbert, I wrote a profile on him last summer.
