12GB PlayStation 3 Super Slim gallery

The mainboard for the 'Super Slim' has been downsized and rationalised considerably. It's a very clean design overall.

Sony hasn't incorporated RSX and Cell into a single chip yet and there are doubts it ever will. In the new model, Cell is still at 45nm while RSX remains at 40nm.

The reason we took our 12GB model apart. That's a Samsung KLMAG2GE4A-A001 eMLC NAND flash chip in the centre - and it's 16GB, not 12GB.

This is the same NAND chip used in the Kindle Fire HD. Sony only advertises the unit as having 12GB capacity as 4GB is reserved for game data caching.

Our impression of the 'Super Slim' is that it's really nicely designed internally with components that are easy to swap out. The BD drive here is a self contained unit that's easy to swap out.

On the left we have the official 250GB upgrade, a Hitachi Z5K500-250. It's almost certainly the same drive as used in the US 250GB PS3 SKU. On the right the Hitachi Z5K500-500, as found in the 500GB PS3. These are our other test subjects.
