Pitfall! reimagined as a Temple Run-style endless runner for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch

Activision has released a new version of 30-year-old platformer Pitfall! for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, reimagined as an endless runner-style game that looks a lot like Temple Run.

It's made by Activision's new developer, The Blast Furnace, which is based in Leeds. The new studio is headed up by Mark Washbrook, who used to run Rockstar London, and former Rockstar Leeds chief Gordon Hall. Hall is chief creative officer with a focus on triple-A experiences on mobile devices.

Pitfall! launched in 1982 on Atari 2600 and became a cult classic. This new version, out now on the App Store for 69p, has new environments and the endless running gameplay popular on the App Store. It feels different, but crocodiles, rope swings, gold bars, diamond rigs and cobras from the original return. The first screenshots are below. A trailer is above.

Hall said: "The original Pitfall! on the Atari 2600 pioneered the action-platform/runner genre.

"We loved Pitfall! then - along with millions of gamers around the world - and we still love it now. In fact, it was the game that inspired quite a few of us to seek a career in game development.

"This new incarnation delivers a best-in-class experience of the game for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. The team has kept the elements that made the original so much fun to play, and merged them with a cool, retro HD art style, updated controls and play mechanics to keep both old-school fans and newcomers happy.

"We're really excited to kick off Pitfall!'s 30th birthday by rebooting the franchise for the mobile audience."

The Blast Furnace is working on an Android version, which will launch later.
