ToeJam & Earl rerelease on PS3 - report

Toetally kool!

The 1991 Sega Mega Drive cult classic ToeJam & Earl and its 1993 sequel ToeJam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron may be coming to Playstation 3.

According to sources at Siliconera, both titles will be part of Sega's upcoming Vintage Collection.

We've pressed Sega for confrimation, but they gave us the standard "No comment at this time" response.

The first ToeJam & Earl was a Roguelike about a couple of rapping aliens searching for pieces of their crash-landed ship. It also contained rocket skates, lemonade and hot tubs.

Christian Donlan waxed flowery about it in his ToeJam & Earl retrospective where he wrote, "We often complain about the limited, repetitive ideas spewed out by even the best big-budget releases, so it's wonderful to have this accidental alien invasion to remind you that, while it's always nice to see graphics, physics, and AI getting better, wouldn't it be lovely if gaming's thematic gene pool expanded at the same rate?"

ToeJam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron was a major departure for the series opting for a 2D platformer rather than the first game's overhead view.

Our Dan Whitehead gave the virtual console port a 6/10 in his roundup where he wrote, "for all its bold ideas, the basic platforming mechanic is pretty shonky. If you're the sort of player who can forgive rough edges in pursuit of mild innovation then give it a try. "
