Epic-Scents: How a fragrance company intends to capture the essence of videogame characters

The sweet smell of Mega Man.

Perfume company Epic-Scents has signed on with Capcom to create fragrances based on beloved videogame characters. No, really.

Announced at the San Diego Comic-Con last week, the Conneticut-based auroma experts signed a deal with Capcom to create smells based around Mega Man and Proto Man.

"We really want gamers to know that we are making a fragrance that is an experience of who that character is," said Epic-Scents project director Jim Kavanaugh in an interview with Polygon.

"We're not saying this is what Mega Man the metal robot smells like, this is a fragrance that expresses him."

To determine this essence, Epic-Scents asked gamers what they felt these characters' defining characteristics were.

In the case of Mega Man's fragrance, Cool Rush, these notes were: purity, bravery and masculinity. Purity is represented by a tropical breeze, masculinity is muskier, while bravery carries a slight citrus flavour.

Protoman's aroma is called Apple Cinnamon. Kavanaugh explained this is "kind of spicy because he's a bit of a rebel."

"There are strong ties between memories and fragrance... when you use our air fresheners you will remember the nostalgia of playing that game."

While only signed with Capcom right now, Epic-Scents is in talks with other game companies to create further character-based smells.

Initially, Epic-Scents will sell air fresheners looking like cutouts of these characters for about $3 each starting in the next two to fours weeks. After that, it would like to expand into colognes and perfumes, so you too can smell like a prepubescent Robocop.
