Double Dragon: Neon announced for PSN, XBLA

2D specialists Wayforward to reboot classic arcade beat 'em up.

Vintage side-scrolling beat 'em up series Double Dragon gets a makeover on PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade this July, publisher Majesco has announced.

As detailed on IGN, Double Dragon: Neon stays true to the franchise's roots, offering old-school left-to-right scrapping. Expect a traditional combo system and an arsenal of familiar weaponry to pick up, including baseball bats, whips and hand grenades.

As hinted at by the title, it's a knowingly retro affair so prepare for a retina-scorching '80s day-glo vibe, complete with tinny hair metal soundtrack.

The choice of developer offers cause for optimism. Wayforward Technologies has proven it knows its stuff when it comes to this sort of thing - it's the same studio behind DS gems Contra 4, Aliens: Infestation, Shantae and Mighty Switch Force, as well as handsome home console efforts like a Boy and his Blob and Bloodrayne: Betrayal.

The last new game in the series to make it to these shores was Double Dragon 5: The Shadow Falls on SNES and Sega Mega Drive way back in 1994.
