Gameplay signs off with £5 Gamestation.co.uk voucher

"It's been a pleasure!"

Soon to be closed online shop Gameplay is giving its customers £5 to spend at Gamestation.co.uk ahead of the merger of the two websites.

Emails are being sent to Gameplay customers now with voucher codes for use in Gamestation.co.uk (thanks duckmouth!).

The fine print reveals the vouchers are valid until 31st March, and a minimum spend of £10 applies.

Yesterday GAME Group revealed plans to close its Gameplay website and migrate its customers over to Gamestation.co.uk from 1st March.

The email is reproduced in full, below:

Dear Gameplay Customer,

We have some very important news for you - as of March 1st the Gameplay website is merging with our sister site, Gamestation.co.uk.

The gaming experts at Gamestation.co.uk offer the same great value and service as Gameplay, and they'd love you to shop with them. As a valued Gameplay customer we'd like to offer you a £5 voucher code to spend at Gamestation.co.uk.

Interested? Here is your code - xxxxxxxxx

We'd like to thank you for being a great customer over the years, and we've truly enjoyed delivering the best in gaming to each and every one of you. It's been a pleasure!

The Team

GAME's well-documented financial difficulties have seen it unable to stock some recent new releases, including Vita launch titles. GAME Group Marketing Director Anna-Marie Mason discussed the specialist retailer's predicament with Eurogamer at length yesterday, saying, "we can't stock absolutely everything".

RAGE Anarchy Edition can be had brand new for £7.99 using this voucher, seems like one of the better deals to me. If anyone else spots a better deal please post it as the voucher is burning a hole in my (virtual) pocket!

Some other decent games (price including voucher discount):

Deus Ex HR Ltd Ed £7.99 (new)
Shadows of the Damned - £6.99 (used)
    Marvel vs Capcom 3 - £7.99 (used)

Filler to make up the £10 (current price):

    Brink - £2.99 (used)
Splinter Cell Double Agent - £2.99 (used)

I decided to go for Shadows of the Damned.

I remember buying a gameboy colour off Sky when they were a big interactive shop there. Really good prices, internet prices before internet retail took off, really.

Shame they went down the toilet but they never really capitalised on the lead they had.

I had been a Gameplay customer for over 10 years and while their prices weren't always the cheapest, their service was ALWAYS leagues better than GAME and Gamestation. My pre-orders always arrived on a thursday and that was with free postage.

This is a real shame to be honest and just cements my utter hatred of GAME's business model.

Can't Game put the site up for sale, rather than close it? I reckon we should badger EG head honcho Rupert Loman into buying it and extend his gaming empire.

Cheers to Gameplay, I'll always remember your Payday sales

I remember buying my Sega Saturn and Dreamcast from Gameplay in the days when they were at the back of magazines before the days of the internet. Shame they have gone.

Sad day for the Gameplay name, I actually worked at their short lived bricks and mortar stores when they were around... one of the best jobs I ever had and actually had staff that knew their games! Unlike Game staff.

    I loved gameplay.com :( This sucks.

where should I go now? Shopto?

Very fond memories of seeing their logo in mags like PC Gamer/Zone all the time. I remember they had an online gaming service once upon a time, too.

Also their Sky Interactive shop was the best thing on there (yes, better than Beehive Bedlam.) Got Pokemon Stadium and Perfect Dark on the N64 from there when they were new.

I still rate Zavvi, never really had a problem with them and they are well cheap.
  • rudedudejude #11 3 months ago

Ahh gameplay.c.uk... Didn't their original logo come from BT wireplay or something...

Shame to see Gameplay go, I have been ordering from them forever, less so in recent years, although their service was always top notch, the price difference between them and the likes of shopto, thehut and amazon won out in the end for me.

Not ordered off the gamestation.co.uk website, it looks like a teenager designed it and is impossible to read.

Might cash in my voucher though and see if i can muddle through!

Gameplay... the one good branch of the GAME group... Gone! :(
  • LR100 #14 3 months ago

The first time I used Gameplay was just over a decade ago, when it was the only place that still stocked the 3rd Monkey Island game on disc (I was late to the party on that one). FOND MEMORIES!
  • BBIAJ #15 3 months ago

I've been buying from Gameplay for years, and received fuck all discount, cheers Gameplay, screw you!

Whereas the GF, whose bought jack shit from them ever, has £5 off, WTF!?
  • Zozzilla #16 3 months ago

I used to use Gameplay a lot back in the day, mostly for PC and Playstation games - sad to see them go, they were always very fairly priced, good delivery times, nice little special offers...they should do away with the GAME and Gamestation sites instead.
  • huckan #17 3 months ago

@rudedudejude I miss wireplay! Not their £500 minute premium number though!
  • Brodie #18 3 months ago

@BBIAJ We sent them out to everyone on our list with a valid email who has opted to receive mails from us dude, so check your spam filters etc.
  • Halo.Jones #19 3 months ago

Used to buy loads from Gameplay back in the days when a number of us used to live on the UKgamer mailing list (EG's own Tom)

    Bye Bye Gameplay.
  • lolercopter #20 3 months ago

Interesting. If I get the e-mail, I know where I'm getting Mass Effect from. Heh.

Tis a sady day indeed that Gameplay is having to close its doors. I got a job there as a wee snivelling 16 year old lad having spied an advert in the local rag. Then went on to work there five years part time up until 2001.

Absolutely brilliant company to work for, loved the BK runs on a weekend and you can't beat getting to take home some games after I'd had the interview.

So many happy memories - ECTS, Dreamcast Launch, Getting Nell McAndrew a banana whilst she was in her Lara get up [she was opening our first store].

Things did start going a bit downhill within the company when decisions were made to try and become this all encompassing empire [which is why the logo is that of Wireplays - Gameplay bought them]. But I could always rely on them to give me stuff at cost [perks of the job :)].

Shame to see it go, but do hope the name will pop up again somewhere as definitely worth saving.

Everything I search for is out of stock :/
  • Mr_Wizard #23 3 months ago

Hmm, haven't had the mail and it's not in my spam folder. Must have turned off marketing emails, that'll teach me :) Sorry to see them go, I must have been buying from them for over a decade. Had no idea they were part of Game nowadays!
  • MrChocolate #24 3 months ago

A sad day. I've been using Gameplay for years without a single hitch. Recommended it to several friends after they had problems with other retailers. Great company. A big thank you to all the staff there for their hardwork.
  • BonzoBanana #25 3 months ago

Not everyone will migrate to gamestation. Couldn't they have shared more website resources between the 2 sites to save money? I thought the good thing about online is you can sell through different websites each tuned to different types of customers but have a cental dispatching location etc. Don't see the point of closing. Seems like another iffy decision.
  • TheHitman #26 3 months ago

    That's a shame.

Gameplay provided me with my first taste of buying games outside of the normal bricks and mortar experience.

It was mail order rather than internet then of course. And all this were just fields.

    Got 2100 MSP for 11.49!
  • brseg #28 3 months ago

No email here yet. Maybe the years of slagging-off Game have counted against me.
  • Turrican #29 3 months ago

Sorry to see Gameplay go, they were always my first choice for hard copy games before Steam and Origin(grr) became tempting. Thursday deliveries with free postage for new releases was the highlight of a generally good shopping experience.
  • AgentCool #30 3 months ago

Great company - I've been ordering with them since around 1995/96 when they advertised on the back page of Official Saturn Magazine and - you'll never believe this kids - you had to ring up to buy stuff. Think they were based in Leeds back then and they eventually opened a shop there which is long gone now.
  • Markusdragon #31 3 months ago

Thanks for pointing this out; my Mass Mailings filter caught it, so I'd have never known otherwise.
  • ExcellentBenji #32 3 months ago

Bought Vanquish (£5), Metro 2033 (£5), Splinter Cell Double Agent (£3) and Brink (£3), all Xbox 360. With £5 off it came to a shade under £11.

    Was well pleased, but:

This morning - order cancelled. No reason given. :-(
  • BonzoBanana #33 3 months ago

Went for Metro 2033 and Ridge Racer 3D, with my £1.67 of points it was down to £7.41 after voucher I think plus I'll hopefully get a bit of quidco cashback.
