Nintendo 3DS sets new Japan sales record
Sells 5m units faster than any console.
The Nintendo 3DS has set another sales record in Japan - further evidence, if it was needed, that it has recovered from its launch troubles.
Over the weekend it crossed the five million sales mark in 52 weeks - a record for Japanese hardware sales.
The previous record holder was the Nintendo DS, which shifted five million in 56 weeks. In third place is the Game Boy Advance, which hit the milestone on week 58.
As Andriasang points out, the Nintendo 3DS sales figure relates to sell-through, that is, units sold from shops to customers.
Nintendo released a nifty new chart, below, to show just how well 3DS has done in Japan post price-cut.

Unless the DS sold over a million units in 53rd, 54th, 55th and 56th weeks combined, and the GBA's sales suddenly halted?
Still, well done Ninty. I finally caved and bought a 3DS on the day Resi: Revelations came out and have to say that it's a really loveable little console. However, its DS emulation isn't that great, so I'm glad I still have my DSi XL for my mountain of old DS games.

True, a lot of it comes down to what time of year they are released as the bulk of sales come around christmas time. Still its good going considering how many had written it off and it bodes well for the future of Japanese games on the system.

I guess we should give the Vita 52 weeks and (hopefully) an increase in the game library before writing it off. I'm not sure it's got anything like a Mario to really get the console off the shelves but there's tons of potential. Sony are relying on 3rd party developers to help them out though.

yet the PSV is struggling to sell more then 20k per week and will probably go under 10k this week.
That poll must have ben full of sony fanboys as the PSV isnt shifting numbers in Japan while the 3DS sits top of the tree.
