Humble Bundle Mojam raises nearly $500k for charity

Mojang makes Steampunk Egyptian themed RTS shoot em' up.

The Humble Bundle Mojam event has raised nearly $500k for charity.

Off the back of the sale of over 77,000 bundles of three games, $458,208.95 was raised, to be distributed to Child's Play, Electronic Frontier Foundation, charity: water and the American Red Cross.

Developers from Minecraft maker Mojang, Cobalt developer Oxeye Game Studio, and Overgrowth maker Wolfire Games made games over the weekend to help raise cash through the Humble Bundle Mojam website.

Mojang made good on its promise to create a game decided on by a poll. It settled on Catacomb Snatch, a Steampunk Egyptian themed RTS shoot em' up.

You can see a screenshot of the game below. It's not in the Peter Molyneux genre, then. Sniff.

Wolfire made The Broadside Express, and Oxeye made Fists of Resistance.

Minecraft maker Notch promised to shave off his beard if the drive raised $500k. There's still time to donate!

I watched the live stream for most of the weekend, and I really do applaud the three teams who worked their asses off for charity, but to be frank I don't think it's possible to make a a game of worth in 60 hours. (I've still not played Oxeye's game yet, though and it did look promising.)

The Mojang and Wolfire games seemed more like tech demos than games, but I feel with more time both could become fun little games in their own right.

Mojang have released the Source Code for their game as well, so who know, it may get turned into something with more meat to it yet.

The purchase period for this was over far too quickly. I didn't even get an email from them, which I have for previous bundles.

Am I going to have to donate seperatley and have to resort to underhand methods to play these now? I am not sure I am comfortable with that.

I do think Humble Indie Bundles are fantastic though, looking forward to the next one.

I watched the stream too whenever I was in front of the PC so I guess they must have announced this somewhere - maybe they only announced it on Twitter and not via email.

I played a work-in-progress of Mojang's game while it was in development and it did get quite a few concepts right; Like that you will only pick up items if you stop shooting - anyone familiar with Cave shooters will know how well this works for high score gaming. It was before the current enemy sprites and before any of the railroad tracks. Not bad for 3 days of work - I especially like the art style, has a certain Metal Slug vibe to them.

This is brilliant and proves that gamers are saving the world!

I'll bet the majority of people who moan about gamers and still live with the past stereotypes wouldn't put that half as much effort into charity.

These strategy games aren't contemporary so I wont be giving them any money.
I advise everyone else to keep the money they currenty have or buy a Call A Duty game.
