Sony US boss Tretton downplays PS4 2012 announcement

Uses that "hitting its stride" phrase for PS3 again.

It's sounding increasingly unlikely that Sony will announce PlayStation 4 this year.

Wise-cracking Sony US leader Jack Tretton told IGN that "I don't want to be thinking about trying to launch new technology any time soon", and said he'd be "very distracted" talking about next-gen hardware this year.

"In terms of when you talk about [the next generation] and when you announce it, it really depends on the health of the existing platform and the other things you have going on," tremoloed Tretton.

strider

Oh hello, it's another Strider.

"And right now, we're focused on PlayStation 3, and I've got another platform [Vita] to get out the door in seven days, so I don't want to be thinking about trying to launch new technology any time soon. I want to focus all our energy on our console business, which is really just hitting its stride, and Vita, which really deserves a dedicated push from us."

"I, quite frankly, would be very distracted if I had to be talking about next generation hardware this year."

"I want to focus all our energy on our console business, which is really just hitting its stride."

Jack Tretton, boss, PlayStation US

He's Tretton on egg shells, you could say, but not denying - outright - a 2012 announcement. E3 may be too close to Vita's launch, and too clogged with Nintendo's Wii U and Microsoft's rumoured Next Xbox announcement, but the Tokyo Game Show in September isn't. Perhaps.

Whatever happens, it's great to hear that Sony's console business is "really just hitting its stride". We've not heard Tretton say that since July 2008 and February 2010.

Sony's still announcing big new exclusives for PS3, like Naughty Dog's The Last of Us.

I think possibly an announcement next year, then see the console the year after that etc.

Nintendo have shown not releasing at the same time as your competitors can still work well, given the money sony needs to claw back at the moment, I wouldn't be surprised for them to stick with the PS3 for a year or 2 more.
  • Dizzy #3 3 months ago

Has the next gen actually started yet? Sony hasn't said anything.

I've bought the PS1, PS2 and PS3, but even I will think long and hard about buying a PS4, assuming one even appears. Sony are struggling to adjust to a tech industry where ecosystem matters as much or even more than build quality. Their phone, tablet, TV and PlayStation strategies are all to some extent hampered by their inability to design good software and implement and support various features, not to mention an inability to link these together into a coherent whole.

No wonder Jack sounds a bit stressed.

I've resisted for this long, but I honestly think my next investment might be a gaming PC. I've had both Xboxes, all three playstations and the Wii. Hilariously, I bought my PS3 specifically to play Skyrim (...) and now I'm wondering if I have finally learned my lesson.
  • monty_79 #8 3 months ago

    @PinktotheLast Very good point.

Hardware generally seems to be of a high standard for Sony, but they have always struggled with the software. FW updates which brick some PS3s, tortuous install times for games and software that spies on your computer then compromises its security..

I'm not M$ biggest fan, but the software they have released for the Xbox has generally been of an excellent standard. It's just the hardware of the 360 that has let me down a couple of times.
  • slippysloppy #9 3 months ago

Personally I don't believe Sony's losses are strictly to do with the PS3 but more to do with the hacking fiasco and even date back to their investment in blu-ray and their pyrrhic victory over HD-DVD.

@EmarkM A gaming PC bought at the right time has been a brilliant investment for me. I was lucky, and bought in at the first set of graphics cards that comfortably ran the engines that gen of consoles used (Unreal3 in the main). So, for me, my Nvidia8800GTX did me for nearly five years. It was luck the first time - this time I'm going to try and time it.

    @Eurocensor

The Xbox 10year project for Microsoft has closed out now, and failed to achieve the objective; to diversify their business like Playstation and be the number one platform holder.

They've had to start a new project with Kinect to get shareholders to agree to pumping in more money, hence why Xbox is so Kinect centric today. If you take away the $500m spent on advertising 360 via Kinect last year, the 360 sales would have fallen off more than the PS3s as the sales graphs would have shown. Sony have been the number one platform holder for the last two generations, and are still on course to be no one this generation by the way the Wii sales have nose dived and moving to WiiU early.
  • anthonypappa #13 3 months ago

i don't see any benefit in announcing it this year - even the 360.

especially with two rockstar blockbusters to keep everyone busy, it's not like the consoles are on their last puffs of breath.
  • EMarkM #14 3 months ago

@TheApologist Yep: I think it's getting time to jump the console ship! Thanks for the info too.
  • ilmaestro #15 3 months ago

@Eurocensor but by the same token, the 360 has now seemingly run out of exclusives, and MS are p.much putting it to bed so they can move on with an actually fully working version of Kinect and their next console.

I'm not sure of the prospect of the PS4 being released before either FFXIII versus, Persona 5 or Kingdom Hearts 3 get released is amusing or depressing...

Regardless, there is a real danger of too many consoles being released too close together. People only have so much money.

@vizzini that's some real spin right there.

They're making money, they're a business. I know you'd love their "ten year project" to end. But it won't The market has a third player now and it's good for all but anyone silly enough to want to be overcharged due to no competition. In fact they have exactly what they wanted now, a popular multi purpose entertainment box under the telly to ensure that, if the PC was to lose share in that space, they had a slice of what replaces it.

oh and in what world world is selling 40 million less than wii doing better and making a company the number 1? rose tinted spinathon.

Owning all has been great. I know it's not something everyone can afford but it is great if you can.

if you only have one console, you miss out on some great exclusives, but if you only have a PC, you miss out on ALL of them.

i don't think being able to run games at a higher frame rate compensates for that. and sometimes the PC misses out on great games altogether. e.g. red dead. and it doesn't really have it's own exclusives any more.

i know some people wont want to hear that. but it's true.

@Eurocensor I don't think any console has ever been made with the intention of making a profit. Most aim to make money on licensing etc. In Sony's case, they also want PS3 to drive blu-ray sales (more licensing), PSN (sales of games, films etc), televisions, surround sound etc. etc. etc.

As to why Sony (the whole company) are losing money, it's more due to poor TV sales (see also Panasonic and Sanyo) and one-off losses from the Ericsson & Samsung deals.
  • seeafish #26 3 months ago

OPM and PSM3 constantly say that they have it on good authority that some kind of announcement will be made this year, most likely at TGS. All speculation though I guess.
PS3 has hit its stride, and I for one am currently loving the seemingly never ending string of quality games (exclusives and multi-plats). I don't NEED a PS4 right now, but as a company, Sony run the risk of being last... again.

Ahh well, who cares, I'm getting too old for this shit anyway.
  • SEVQA #27 3 months ago

If the PS4 or a 'sku' is fully compatible with PS3 software then no reason why it could not live side by side with the PS3. IMO a sooner the better approach to making announcements would be beneficial to Sony, though suspect they may be waiting to see MS's hand prior to anything.

I am completing FFXIII as a preparation for FFXIII-2, and I have to say that the graphics of this game are stunningly beautiful. I have a brand new gaming rig (bought because I had to upgrade my computer anyway, so it might as well play games), but I have to say that I can easily live with PS3 and 360-graphics for a few more years.

You keep talking about tin-foil hats as though that type of FUD substitutes for reasoned argument and substantiation with facts, which is fine by me if you don't care about convincing people you are correct; you are just not being very pragmatic with the information available.

The Wii has done exceptionally well to survive as long as it has, but has largely saturated its potential market and has remained weak compared to 360/PS3 for 3rd party publisher software sales.

It might be the first Nintendo console to break 100m sales(as the yardstick that Playstation set), and it is conceivable that Playstation 3 might not reach the Playstation 2 numbers(~135m) before it sales dive like the Wiis.

However, the current price point of the ps3 hardware and forward looking price cuts, publisher enthusiasm for the platform, and publisher's acknowledgement of abandoning PS2 software too early, all indicate that PS3 has at least 4years left with consumers beyond the dedicated games consumers reading EG, which should equate to 45m-60M units sold.
  • weedar #32 3 months ago

@seeafish And yet Wii was last, and won... There is more to winning the console war than being first out the door...
  • anthonypappa #33 3 months ago

@MENTAL1ST statistically, you could say call of duty is one the greatest games ever...

and i don't know a single person who ever bought a PC for they MMO subscription games. graphics aren't the point of them. and graphics (and performance) are the point of a gaming PC.

realistically, aside from these quintessentially PC games (MMO's) you have no list of PC exclusives to counter my argument. hence why you didn't give one.

i haven't heard a single call out in the console community for world of warcraft. i have however, heard plenty for red dead on PC.

Thank god for that. I am plenty happen with what we have now. There are quite a few good PSN or XBLA games and a good selection of retail games due this year. Not to mention loads from last year I haven't been able to get yet.

Plus I wouldn't like to be in any of the console owners shoes trying to launch an expensive new bit of kit on to the market with the economy as it is. Even when they do arrive I won't be biting until a year and a half post launch to see how they all pan out and not get ripped as an early adopter.

    Stalker Series

    Company of Heroes
    Silent Hunter 3
    Total War Series
    Battlefield 2
    Terraria
    Amnesia
    Dear Esther
    Sins of a Solar Empire

All highly rated PC exclusives, just off the top of my head that aren't MMOs.

Between your hilarious "PC has no exclusives" comments and Vizzini's usual spin "If Microsoft hadn't spent money advertising the 360 their sales would have fallen off" (Like Sony don't advertise the PS3 or like they didn't release Move!) this thread is a real fanboy case study.

Also, I know it's bad to feed the trolls but Vizzini's argument that PS3 still has 40million sales left due to forthcoming price cuts also applies to the 360 which has yet to hit that under £100 sales driver.

@anthonypappa A list of exclusives isn't going to win any arguments. But if you're genuinely interested, some of the unreleased games I'm most looking forward to this year are Diablo 3, Dota 2, Starcraft 2, Mechwarrior Online, Guild Wars 2, ArmA 3 and Torchlight 2. Tribes Ascend and Planetside 2 are also on my radar.

I honestly couldn't think of anywhere near that amount of games on the Xbox that I'd be interested in. PS3 at least does have some interesting stuff that I'd like to have closer look at.

Is someone saying PC has no exclusives? Its got whole fucking genres that are exclusive.
  • Unstable_ISOtope #42 3 months ago

Guys, calm down. I just bought a PS3 last September after the price cut, so this is what I have to say about your arguments over which console had a better financial plan/outcome. First hear this; I really dislike the x360, it's games are allright but the PS3 seems to have way better exclusives to me, Sony seem to say less b/s and the low cost of the SKU's are negated when you pay for XBL. However, the x360 has undoubtedly won over the PS3 this generation and even if there is still some time left I find it hard for the PS3 to regain a lot of it's userbase. I say regain because a ton, nay, a crapton of PS2 gamers bought a 360 instead of PS3 this gen, and only a 360. That's because the 360 didn't have an utterly retarded launch price (even worse in the UK, but bad everywhere). It still seems to do the job. the 360 is the PS2 of this generation, the PS3 is like.. the Gamecube maybe?! of this generation. MS actually made a profit on their system. The PS3 made Sony a loss for.. I don't know.. the first five years? Next time they need to keep R&D costs down, use stock components instead of designing their own (I'm looking at you, Cell Processor) and get a good balance between build quality and affordability. Maybe I should have bought an x360 ages ago, maybe not. But what I do know is that Sony has A LOT of thinking and work to do if they want the PS4 to be a success like the PS2 was and take back their old customers.
  • Elven_Star #43 3 months ago

ok. the only PC exclusives i've heard of there, are like, old. not saying they are no good.

anyway the PC has more niche titles, which is fine, but they are not the type of games i'd feel felt out by not owning. and usually aren't the type of games which require big power. (arma 3 being the only exception for me here) now that the consoles have caught up with PC's, we won't see the old days of big PC exclusives. half-life 3 for example. it may be the best platform to experience it on, but no way will it be PC exclusive.

my point is, for a serious gamer who follows the scene day to day, a PC as your sole platform would be a little too sparse. for me anyway - and i only own a ps3. i also own a capable PC, but i downgraded the GPU to a passive card because of its horrendous noise, i don't use it for gaming any more.

@Eurocensor "An objectively successful product is one that makes money for the company that created it, or one that is a loss leader as part of a long term goal of making money. The PS3 is neither of those things."

Assuming the PS3 is running on the loss-leading model (that's been Sony's game plan with their previous consoles, so safe bet I guess), what evidence do you have that the PS3 is not meeting that goal? Or perhaps more importantly, WILL not. What's the yardstick for determining if it has failed or succeeded, considering it's still on the market, still selling well, still seeing a lot games developed for it?

"You can also measure success by raw sales figures, although that's pretty meaningless if you're not making any money and the PS3 has been outsold by the 360 and Wii."

Outsold, yes, but still selling. And I would hardly call 55m (or whatever they're up to) and 5m or so short of the 360 a failure. I believe, too, that, as of now, PS3 IS being sold at a profit. Admittedly that wasn't the case for quite some time, but still.

It seems you've decided to draw a line in the sand today and state "it's a failure". I don't think you have the data or the crystal ball to qualify your opinion.
  • arcam #50 3 months ago

my point is, for a serious gamer who follows the scene day to day, a PC as your sole platform would be a little too sparse. for me anyway - and i only own a ps3.

That's fair enough, but you have to realise that a PC owner might feel the same way about a PS3 or Xbox. If I only had a PS3 I would feel I was missing out, if you only had a PC you would feel you were missing out. Just accept that everybody's tastes aren't the same.

Just because you've never heard of Diablo, Company of Heroes or Tribes doesn't mean they're not some poeple's favourite games.

Oh look its djclownshoes/lollage again. Wonder what alias you'll use next eh? Seriously, your repetitive ranting isn't fooling anyone. You say the same shit every time you get banned and open a new account. MS must love having a freebie tool like you doing their work for them.

On the article, it is a bit embarrassing for Sony to continuously use the "hitting its stride" line over and over again. Its 5 years into its life cycle, how long do Sony need for it to "hit its stride?" Sony lost shit loads of money on the PS3, they've just released a new handheld and that too is struggling so I can't see Sony either announcing or releasing a new console for at least 2 years yet.

This year's E3 will be Vita focussed for Sony, MS will most likely announce a new console for release next year, and Nintendo will hopefully show off some real WiiU games as well as the final specs. I skipped the Wii after owning both an N64 and GameCube, so hopefully the WiiU will draw me back into Nintendo consoles.

Everyone can say all they want about how successful or unsuccessful the PS3 has been, but until the global economy has recovered fully in its biggest markets (EU and NA) there will be underwhelming demand for any next generation console. Therefore Sony will most probably wait until 2014 when demand will have likely recovered and the all important yen exchange rate will allow Sony to negate its losses with a PS4 that'll appeal to the widest audience i.e. new emerging markets, casual gamers.

I dunno. I'm feeling more now that consoles are going to have a crisis or a huge reinvention. There's going to be a major swing back to PC, especially if some smart manufacturer makes a standardised unit that will feature some benefits of console but the general freedoms of PC. Microsoft recently tried to transform their product from a games machine to a media rental service and I suddenly find myself with a product that isn't what I sought to buy.

I doubt the next Sony console will be called Playstation 4. Sony want to rebrand and unify themselves as "Sony" not as a multitude of disparate divisions. And Playstation just sounds long in the tooth, like Gameboy.

While I've been sticking to my PS3 (and increasingly lately, my PC) since my first and only 360 died a few years ago (and it hadn't actually been used much at all the year before that), I remain platform agnostic enough to plan on buying the first next gen console with compelling hardware specs (ie. a major upgrade from the current gen consoles) to hit the market. I don't care if it's from Sony or MS.

If I eventually buy the other one it probably won't be until much later.

With 4 years of losses and a stock price that went from 36$ to 16$ in less than a year, Sony won't survive a PS4 launch. The can create the hardware, but have no cash to put it into production, nor to market it and have it gather momentum.

I used to work at PlayStation Magazine, so I'm kind of a PS believer, but with Apple on the rise (thei business model is WAY better for devs), I see dark clouds ahead for Sony.

@trebellk I am well aware that Sony too chats a lot of crap, but they don't lie by trying to say their systems are good value for money and don't act in denial by purporting to be the kings of gaming.

At least with Sony they're relatively more down to earth in terms of what they're selling you: an expensive and sometimes worthwhile investment.

On the other hand at MS HQ: "We're proud to announce [INSERT GENERIC CRAP HERE] and hope it to be a staple present this holiday season. At £199 there's fun for the whole family".. "You wanna' buy XBL? Wait what you only play online a couple of hours every week? What is this crap? £40 PLZ for 1 person kthxbai.".

@Unstable_ISOtope TBH if it weren't for XBL I probably would have bought a 360 years ago.

@iso i just don't see it. they talk as much arse as each other.

They push everything as bigger and better as much as the next company.

Frankly the whole industry is bloody awful in the juvenile way it sells it's products.

and the xbla thing? just bought my nephew one for 29 quid on Amazon. Shop around. Starts to look like the usual anti xbox rant.

Oh, that's because it is. I thought it was debating with a multi format owner for a minute. Not to worry, back to the trench with you.

@trebellk What a mug. I'm not saying x360 is complete crap, and XBL is NOT the only reason I do not want a 360. But it's the tip of the iceberg. There are SO many reasons why I waited out for a PS3 but it's not like you would listen. £30 ontop of £150 is not value for money, especially since the PS3 is £180 anyway. So just for ONE user's XBL account you have just spent the equivalent of a PS3 on an Xbox360. If anyone else wants XBL, this becomes £60. And this is a yearly payment and assumes that your frequently play games online. For a lot of people that is a waste. Not everyone is rich you know, and those who aren't rich and buy consoles CAN'T afford it, they just tell themselves they can and live riskily like those crazy investment bankers all the time. Lol I bet you're one of those mugs who buys a crapton of gadgets for his family on Christmas even though he's poor and can't truly afford to do so. Even £180 is a lot of money to shell out, the industry just wants it to seem cheap as compared to the gargantuan launch prices.

I like Sony better. I like the PSN community better. I like the look and feel of the PS3 better. The PS3 has many more media capabilites than an Xbox360. The PS3 is cheaper for the consumer in the long run (but admittedly still expensive, in sensible terms). The PS3 certainly has many more and higher quality exclusives than the Xbox360. The PS3 follows on from two immensely popular consoles with a plethora of great games, what does 360 follow up on.. Hay-Low1? Wow.. considering that game didn't even have online play on the xbox.. and considering Halo 2 is nothing compared to pc fps's of the time.. nice. And yet, for multiplats, the 360 IS a good console. I admit as much. But if It's going to cost me the same amount or more to keep a 360 than a PS3, why would I buy a 360 when I could get so much more than I want from a PS3? If this was 5 years ago and 360 was still relatively better for my money than a PS3.. fair enough. Right now? Not a chance.

@trebellk It's also sad how you and the neggers missed how I said in my first post how MS has won this generation and posted a 599 USD joke vid? I don't like the 360, but I know it got it's finances right.
  • ronuds #82 3 months ago

I negged you because everything you're saying is pretty stupid.
  • Unstable_ISOtope #83 3 months ago

@ronuds How so? CTRL+F, ever heard of it? Search for 'Unstable_ISOtope' and read all of my posts.
If explaining why I like PS3 whilst detailing why I believe the 360 is winning over the PS3 is stupid, well then you must either hate people who consider more than one side of an argument or are an idiot (or alternatively/probably both).

Is what I said about the PS3 and its merits wrong? No. Is what I said about the 360 and its merits wrong? No. Is what I said about cost and value for money and stupid people buying what they can't afford wrong? Absolutely not. So you really are and idiot, or you are an idiot who spends what he cant afford and are offended that I brought the subject up. What's wrong, did I remind you of your latest bank statement? Boo hoo.
