Crackle app now on Xbox 360

Free movie and TV streaming for XBL Gold subs.

The Crackle app (75.34MB) is now on Xbox 360, Microsoft has announced.

It's available if you live in Australia, Canada, the UK or the US and are an Xbox Live Gold subscriber.

Crackle, the latest addition to the Xbox 360's growing list of non-gaming features, is a movie and TV show streaming app that takes a slightly different approach to Lovefilm and Netflix.

It focuses on "genres that embody cool" and offers uncut and uncensored content free. Crackle is owned by Sony Pictures Entertainment.

"We've had enough of 'disposable entertainment' that is as relevant as a laughing/dancing baby - we are here to watch and talk about the videos that really matter," reads the official blurb.

Meanwhile, the CinemaNow app is now available for the US only.

Now that this is on the Xbox 360, perhaps Sony could talk to Sony about putting it on the PS3 as well?

I wish they would figure out a way to give these things to non-gold subs.
I'm non-gold and will not be upgrading. I'd be fine with more adverts if needed.
Things like the Sky viewer should be free to the user. Sky should pay MS to have ot on their box.

EG I would really like some more info on these new apps for xbox. I don't fancy downloading them and finding out these video apps are sub based. Could anyone tell me if this app has free movies? Clips? TV series? yada yada yada?
  • Harmonica #10 4 months ago

Also has such a great front page advert picture that I assumed it was just some shitty straight to DVD movie.

Ironically, it's a marketplace to stow that kind of stuff in; with that blurb backhandedly slagging off YouTube created content/whatever, it shows itself up as made for by foppish movie rights holders who don't 'get it'.

I have a subscription to LoveFILM and their app does absolutely nothing for me why would I bother checking out yet another crappy advert loaded mess.

TO ANY MS PEOPLE: fix your horrifically laggy YouTube app, it's the only thing that is actually useful. (to be clear the actual streaming is perfect in full HD but the menus usually crap out and force you to retry loading the same user page over and over).

@Eurocensor It is pretty cheeky though. Fair enough paying to use XBox Live's servers for matchmaking and voice comms etc. but I'm pretty sure when I'm connecting to Netflix or Facebook Microsoft's servers don't need to get a look in beyond the inevitable data-mining.
  • edwalker #12 4 months ago

Wow Sony you are really spoiling us with this 4th rate drivel you can't even shift on DVD.
  • FireMonkey #13 4 months ago

@Eurocensor - It's not the fact it will break the bank, it's the fact that I already pay for Sky content and already pay for Love film content and I do not play games on-line at home and I get all this content for free on my PC connected to the TV.

If MS want me to think of the console as anything but a games console then they need to make it more attract to me than using my PC. Until that time comes all this stuff is a pointless waste of money.

As I was saying with Sky. Surely it should be free to Sky users. Sky should be paying MS to have their content on there. We should not be the ones having to pay MS.

Edit: If Sony sort out the on-line for the next gen and it is still free and MS still charge, that'll be a huge blow to MS. MS must be thinking about this.

Crackle is free to XBL gold members, that means no additional sub fee. To be honest there is such an overwhelming amount of content on Netflix (US version using the DNS trick) for £6/month I really don't need any additional video services.

I would love Spotify to come to 360 though but don't think it will as it rivals Zune.

Never heard of it, but just checked on line. Not bad for a freebie.

Films on offer appear to include Street Fighter (lol) and Wild Things (fap fap fap). TV shows seems to include mainly comedy, cartoons and anime.

I'll be "studying" Wild Things again more closely later....

Forgot to point out completely seriously that any film fans worth their salt baulk at the idea of streaming films over the internet, anyway. Even if you luck out and get a absolutely spotless, pristine hi-def encode of the film (you won't), you run the risk that at any moment the stream or internet will crap out and you're left sitting in the dark with half of a movie spoiled.

Of course, the rights holders love it because they could care less about how the films are presented to the users and live in fear of any amount of megabytes of content arriving on any distant hard drives.

@Eurocensor - I'm not whining. I am completely happy to and do use these apps for free on my PC (and would on PS3 if I had).

If MS want me to use them on the console and see their ads (and so generate money for them) then they need to do something better. Until then it is complexly pointless to me and many others.

@FireMonkey so what you're saying is that you have the ability to access these features over a PC for free, but are still here whining (yes, you are whining) about not being able to access them on your Xbox.

I can only assume that the "many others" that you mention that will also find these services "complexly pointless" will be people, like yourself, that are able to access these services using a PC for free.

Guess what. You're not the target audience for these services on the Xbox. Enjoy what you have on your PC and quit complaining.

As @Fus394 said. We get fuck all here in Finland, the zune app lacks in content, dailymotion sucks, the twitter app is useless, the facebook app... And thats about it. Thats one of the drawbacks here, and why there are lot more ps3 players in Finland. We get nothing for our xboxes compared to other countries in terms of apps and services. Even the dashboard isn't localised and in Finnish.
  • riz23 #31 4 months ago

@SeanBeansGravyBoat - No it is not whining. It's airing an opinion. So stop your whining about other peoples opinions. /s

The way I see it, the more 'free' service MS adds under the paid Gold subscription, the more Sony's free on-line system that has access to the same service looks better. I'm sure this isn't what MS want.

At the moment I doubt that many people have either paid for a gold account or had their decision to purchase one enforced just because of these 'free' services. They are currently just a nice extra to people who want to play games on-line.

I feel (an opinion not a whinge) that if MS were to offer the 'free' services to ALL Live members with additional ads for silver and none for gold then they would actually generate more money and make the Live service as a whole more appealing to new customers.
    Edited by FireMonkey at 01/02/12 @ 10:47
  • FireMonkey #34 4 months ago

    @Eurocensor - It's not ridiculous.

If a new customer is listing what you get on PS3 and 360, they will see lot's of things on PS3 that are free that you have to pay for on the 360. The more there is the more you get for free on PS3 and therefore the stronger the PS3 seems.

@FireMonkey "They are currently just a nice extra to people who want to play games on-line"

Hit the nail on the head there. That is EXACTLY what these services are. I would be surprised if even 1% of people that pay for a gold sub had their decision swayed by these additional services. Ultimately people pay their £40 a year (or whatever it is these days) to play games online, and that's it. Anything else that is given as part of that sub is added value.

Which is why I get really annoyed when I see people that seem to be out to do nothing but complain about things like this. It's just moaning for the sake of it.

@SeanBeansGravyBoat - I actually think we may almost be in agreement here, just with a few crossed wires.

I do actually think the services are great and are a really nice feature if you already have Gold. I just think MS could do more with it and make more money from it by making it a better feature for the console as a whole. The services would then appeal to non-gold users and be an extra tick when coming to sell the console to a new owner. MS seem to be pushing heavily into the realms of being more than just a games console, so surely they should offer services that are not just extras for the games players?

Had a look at Crackle. This is the service that Sony ran with after removing their stuff from NetFlix last year. Judging by most of what I see on there, they might as well had stayed on Netflix instead. It just looks mediocre content wise, but its free so I can't complain.

Besides, there's some good anime on there too. 96 eps of Samurai X is not to be sniffed. A bit of Astroboy is okay too.

I have to say this streaming service area is getting interesting. I eagerly awaited Netflix when I heard it was due in the U.K. My Skybox, which I used to love, now sits dormant and unused because Sky can't be reasonable on their prices. (Can't fault live sky sports mind) Latest reports say that Sky also want to move into streaming soon, obviously in fear of Netflix.

Don't see Sky's topping NetFlix though, because while Sky might have more up to date content, you are still forced to have a normal offline sat based Sky account, where you get stitched up on their high prices, for stuff you don't want. Come back when you can match Netflix prices, then we'll talk.
  • miiiguel #40 4 months ago

@Biker: Replace Sony with whatever, was to make a point. Boring.
Anyway, "problem" with the availability with digital content Europe wise is due to digital content rights in each country, for example, I'll never get Netflix here unless Netflix opens up its service and pays all the shenanigans to operate in my current contry.
Going off-topic, I see you continue to be the same nice guy to hang on with, aside from the fact you have that need to judge on one's kicks, that's cool, though I have no problem that you dig dick, that's your thing.
    Peace.

All this nicey nice video on-demand, high res streaming marlarky is great but until the broadband infrastructure in the UK improves (ie BT not throttling evening broadband speed - and before you all say "change ISP" - I have no choice as I live in a market town where they are the only operation) then I won't even consider this sort of stuff - paid for or not.
  • FireMonkey #42 4 months ago

@Eurocensor - "Improving your service while charging no more for it does not make a competitor's service look more attractive. It makes your own service more attractive."

    I beg to differ.

You seem to be thinking of this from the viewpoint of someone who already has Gold. In that case, yes this is great and makes the service better.

I am talking about new customers who do not want to play games on-line. If they have to pay for these 'free' services on one console and not the other than that makes the console where they are free seem more attractive. Maybe not much more, but it could be enough to sway an opinion.

Oh and thanks for your concern for my finances but there is no need as I do have my own small business that had almost zero outlay and makes me a nice tidy and increasing profit each month.

I do worry that if you can't see beyond your own viewpoint then it's probably you that wants to be careful in business.

@Eurocensor - "Think about it. A year ago, the 360 hardly had any of these apps. A consumer would have looked at the 360 and PS3 and saw what they do and made a decision based on that. Now they will see that the 360 can do a bunch of new stuff (about 10 or so new apps have been added in the last month, with more coming) that it couldn't do before, but for no more money"

No more money? Except that £30 a year if it's a new customer who doesn't want on-line games. A new customer does not care how much you had to pay for a year ago. A new customer who doesn't want on-line games does not see this as no additional cost.

Let me run a little scenario past you to see if this makes what I am saying clearer.

Imagine, before the apps started coming out a customer (who doesn't want to play games on-line) looked at the PS3 and the 360. They compared the console, games and services and in their mind they were equal and so could not decide which to buy.

That customer decides to save there money for a while to see how things progress.

Today, they have decide to compare them again. In there eyes the consoles, games and service (that were already there) haven't really changed, but there is this new thing called an app. This customers loves the idea of some of these apps but as they don't want to play games on-line it will cost them £30 a year purely for the apps on 360 and be free on the PS3.

In this customers mind, the PS3 is now better value for money (by £30 a year) and so they would more likely buy that console over the 360.

Hopefully that shows you that these apps costing on 360 and not on PS3 'may' sway new customers to purchase the PS3 over the 360. I'd hope consumers would have a better reason for choosing between the two then just that, but you can not deny that it IS a factor.

Please look at the logic and stop twisting the argument to make it sound like you know what you are talking about.

@JAGUARCD32x - I don't think the world should do without these things. I like them.

I just aired an opinion that I think it would be good (for MS and non-gold members) if they did something like an ad supported version for non-gold members (whilst not having ads for Gold).

Thinking about it, wouldn't it be better if they scrapped all ads from the dash for Gold members and kept them for Silver as well. I don't like ads, but I understand why MS want them.

Is that really such a bad thing to suggest?

Wow, is this accurate? I need to go get my dad's login details as he doesn't own an Xbox. Sweeet!
  • FireMonkey #54 4 months ago

@JAGUARCD32x - You get the demos and downloads on 360 without paying too btw.

I don't have a problem with MS charging for Gold, just think there is a better solution for these apps. Making them available to Silver (with ads) would not affect Gold members at all, but would make it so that there is more to the console for those of us who choose not to spend the extra money.

If you have all the consoles and a PC then it sounds like you probably have much more disposable cash than me. I probably buy 2 or 3 games a year and rarely finish those as I like to spend as much of my time and money as I can on my 3 kids. 20p a day may not sound much to you young whipper-snappers, but 20p wasted here and 20p there and it all adds up in the end. 8)

@Eurocensor - Sigh. I have reasoned and explained yet you still don't see the point that I am showing you and keep on arguing the same thing.

I am in agreement that the service on 360 HAS got better. There is no denying that. BUT, we are not debating that.

If you don't already pay for the service and don't want the on-line play what you are left with a paid for service on the 360 or a free one on the PS3. Do you really think people who do not want on-line gaming will think 'Oh! I know, I'll pay for this service when it is free on PS3'? If that is a deciding point then NO they will not.

If you really can't see that then I feel sorry for you.

And you are calling ME a fan-boy? I have said in this thread I have a 360 and not a PS3. I am pro-MS (not to the extent of being a MS fan-boy though) as you can tell if you see other posts in other forums.

You however seem to think a simple suggestion on how MS could improve it's system for others is an attack on MS and seem to have taken it personally. Judging by previous comments of yours on Eurogamer and the complete disregard to any logic or facts shown to you here, I'd say it is you are that is the fan-boy.

@FireMonkey, that's not how content works. The Platform ALWAYS pays the content provider to have carriage on the platform, that is the way it works in the TV industry and all your VOD offerings, irrespective of platform. That is why you do not get it free of charge.

  • SpaceMonkey77 #67 4 months ago

    @FireMonkey

Can't believe some are still complaining about the £30 for Live annually. While I agree it should be free to play 360 online, with it going through XboxLive we get more than just an online connection. Be it Nexus, Inside Xbox or IGN guides or developer interview etc, that £30 is worth it. Add the new aps and even more so.

Damn, I used to be paying Sky like £48 a month, just to watch tv that I couldn't cherry pick from. I was being mugged. I soon stopped my Sky, when I realised that the amount of money I was spending, would be better spent on games, that offer me countless hours of play. When they wanted to charge me £50, just to reconnect my Sky, I'd had enough of being bled dry.

So, next time you think Live isn't worth £30, think again, hard. Its not that bad, and easily beats a free PSN.
  • FireMonkey #68 4 months ago

@SpaceMonkey77 - You missed part of the point there.
I'm not complaining about the £30. I have agreed £30 IS great value if you want to play games on-line and the guides and stuff, but not everyone does. To me with kids the Sky subscription is a lot more valuable than the Live subscription.

I just think MS could bring the apps to non-silver members in a way that it still raiseS money for them and doesn't adversely effect Gold memberships (i.e. ad-funded on Silver and not on Gold).

As far as I am concerned this would be to the benefit of MS and the Silver members without any detriment to the Gold (perhaps even benefit them if Silver get more ads as that 'may' mean Gold could get rid of the dash-board ads).

Was just pondering a thought and an opinion. I forgot this was the net though and we are not allowed to do that.

Anyway, it is now dropped as I'm as bored with the subject as everyone else.

Does anyone know what sort of TV and movies this Crackle show?

And what does "genres that embody cool" mean?
  • FireMonkey #70 4 months ago

@JAGUARCD32x - Nice idea, but I have a feeling it wouldn't take off.

The amount of hate for in-game advertising at the moment indicates that people wouldn't support it, especially as older games can be bought for just a few quid now anyway.

I'm sure someone will try it with newer games at some point though (and I have a feeling it'll be someone like OnLive), so we'll see. Could be an interesting way of reducing the cost of gaming so more people can enjoy it.

The way I see these Apps is that with the bing search, I have a greater chance to find the movie, TV Show, internet content that I am looking for. If Bing can search all of these apps for the content I am looking for than this could be thee killer app MS is trying to achieve.

I was using Kinect voice search with Bing and I was impressed about how easy it returned what I am looking for.

Until everyone gets 4G handsets, and swallows the available bandwidth using YouTube HD videos of lolcats and Porn Tube sites.

    The Good:
    Live action 'The Tick'.
Spiderman-animated (the short-lived CGI version, surprisingly good).
    Dilbert animated.
    Starship Troopers Roughnecks
    A few anime series.

    The Bad:
    everything else.

It's a nice freebie for Gold subscribers, but I'm also not convinced about paying for Live as I rarely play games online. I do play for PS+ funnily enough, simply because they give you so much free content. It's a real bargain. If Xbox offered a free game a week or something, it'd make me more likely to renew my Gold sub.
