RedLynx: "real fans" will want to wait for the finished Trials Evolution

Denies developer leaked its own game.

"Real fans" will want to wait for the finished version of upcoming Xbox Live Arcade game Trials Evolution - and not download the leaked version, developer RedLynx has said.

Trials Evolution leaked onto file-sharing websites last night, sparking the appearance of unapproved gameplay videos publisher Ubisoft has been working furiously to remove from the internet.

RedLynx managing director Tero Virtala told Eurogamer the leaked version is without online features - and thus does not offer the complete package.

"Trials Evolution is a huge game, and it's launching on Xbox Live Arcade for one good reason: because the online features are absolutely essential to completely experience the game," he said.

"You will be able to enjoy it as a single-player game, but Trials fans know that the leaderboards and friend competitions are an important part of the experience. And in Trials Evolution, online multiplayer and global track sharing take the game to a whole new level.

"None of these online features, the core of Trials Evolution, are in any of the leaked videos that we've seen. Real fans are going to want to wait for the actual, final, polished game and the complete online experience.

"Meanwhile we'll continue polishing and perfecting the game. Once it launches, it will be the perfect Trials game, we don't accept anything else for Trials. There's a new trailer coming out very soon, which will give people a much better idea of when to expect it and what to expect in the full Trials experience."

It has been suggested that someone on the inside - at RedLynx - leaked Trials Evolution - but Virtala denied this.

In 2009 Virtala admitted he deliberately leaked the PC version of Trials to torrent sites in the hope pirates would play it and then buy a legitimate copy of the game."

No, I want it now. I'm happy to pay for it, I'm just impatient.

Surely all leaks come from the inside? Unless their servers were hacked and code stolen, but that seems much less likely.

Anyway, I don't think leaks are all that damaging, or at least no more damaging than the pirate version that happens for every game anyway.

And wait I shall. Trials HD is definitely the best value for money XBLA game I've bought - really enjoy playing it still. And while I don't count myself as one of the "real, mega-epic(?), hardcore" fans or whatever they're trying to emphasise in this statement, I'm certain they'll deliver a really good product that I'll be happy to give them money for.

Looking forward to it. No rush, though.

Whens the PC version coming out?

Someone in marketing or other department could have had an early build and it could have been leaked that way.

Devs will look after the build with their lives but suits do not. I've seen it first hand

I'd be inclined not to play a leaked game because I have more than enough finished ones that I've yet to play. Trials HD is on that list actually.

News like this really does piss me off, could write a whole lot more but I won't. Red Lynx deserves better than this. :(

I hope it doesn't delay it any further.

I get the impression that 'gotyourmoney' is some kind of gormless conspiracy theorist half-bake who thinks piracy is acceptable, as per this and other comments in other articles

I didn't know there was a new version of Trials coming out. That'll definitely be worth putting some points down on...

..although I should maybe try and finish the last level first.

Trials HD was immense but the claustrophobic dark setting kinda put a downer on things after a while... really like the look of this.

One thing though, I wish they'd let us choose what balancing method you can use. Not played it in ages but I distinctly remember that using the analogue stick basically put your rider into a position, like a switch. Press right, he leans forward and stays forward until you press left back to the nutral position, press left again to make him lean backwards.. often I think this messed me up a I was just using the analogue stick as if my rider would lean forwards or backwards in relation to where I was pointing it, in real time, but it had that kind of switch mechanic which made it harder to know when you were leaning forward, backward or in the neutral position. i.e. When I released the analogue stick I'd expect it to be in the middle position but it remained in whatever position I'd previously pressed it to....

Am I the only person who'd been annoyed by this? :p

I could almost care since I used to be a Trials fan but then I remember how full of crap Red Lynx are. I remember how much they said they appreicated their fans and the Trials 2 community. I remember how it turned out that appreication didn't quite stretch to not completely abandoning PC as soon as the hot young XBLA batted its eyelashes at them. Screw you Red Lynx.

I gifted a few copies of Trials HD to friends and relatives and will probably do the same with Trials 2. The leak sucks, but Trials is such a brilliantly realised mix of gameplay, graphics and note-perfect personality that I believe people will line in in droves to buy the sequel.

Some brave developer should do a Radiohead-esque "Pay what you want" on a sequel game sometime. The results would be interesting.

Persus-9: And what do they owe you, or any other PC gamer for that matter? Where did it say that when you bought Trials 2 that RedLynx would only ever make games for your beloved platform forever afterwards? I think you may need to be a little more realistic. RedLynx make fantastic games, and it seems they've earned themselves a much larger audience as a result of being on XBLA, so more power to them as far as I'm concerened.

(Ubisoft can f*ck off and die in a ditch though).

@geeza2020: They owed us some consideration. Ordinarily I'd agree that a company owes its customers no more than a working product. However if a company plays the "We love our fans!" card to try and boost comunity good will and increase word of mouth advertising then I think they do owe it to those fans to act in such a way that doesn't prove their words were bullshit. If you say you're going to be nice to a group because you appreciate them then you owe it to them to be good to the spirit of your word.

Here they are playing the "fans" card again to try and talk their fans into not acting purely out of self-interest and downloading the leak. Well fans beware, the past suggests Red Lynx act purely out of self-interest and don't care about you at all. That said downloading the leak and not then buying the game would be a truly crappy thing to do, just because they're kind of dicks doesn't mean you don't have a moral obligation to pay them what they ask for their hard work if you want to enjoy it.

@ubergine I can't think anyone who has done it with a newly released sequel and it couldn't be done on XBLA right now but there have been a load of PWYW deals on PC in the last few months and some have been quite free with the sales data. You might want to google the Humble Indie Bundle.

P.S. Trials 2 was a PC game released in 2009, if you want to refer to Trials Evolution by a number then I think it should be Trials 4.
  • DwarfyP #20 4 months ago

I'll wait for it but at least tell us how long we have to wait
  • geeza2020 #21 4 months ago

Persus - 9: I guess if you bought into all that "we're doing it for the fans!" spiel that most games company's try and pedal at some point, then you could feel a little bitter. Personally, I've had a whole lifetime of bitterness built up in me to the point where I don't have any relationship with developers/publishers beyond 'Here's my money, give me my game, now bugger off.' I'm a resentful old codger though :)
