Counter-Strike 1.6 running on Android devices now

Boom! Headshot!

Classic PC game Counter-Strike (1.6) has been recreated for Android devices using the nifty Unity 3D engine.

There are two versions of Counter-Strike Portable available from the XDA forum now for free. One version - 5o - is for older phones; the other - 6p - for Android 2.3+ devices.

Online multiplayer is supported, and new maps are being added.

A video of Counter-Strike Portable running on Xperia Play can be found below.

Love the idea, but lets face it.. touch screen controls for FPS just do not work.

Make it on the vita and I would be very interested

Ugh, the files are on one of those awful ad-filled hosting sites. Why can't stuff be mirrored onto University FTP servers like the good old days?

The sooner US Navy Sealy assassinate all the people who run these sites, like they did that fat German guy, the better.

Fps on touch screens are the stupidest idea ever.

Runs very nicely on a Korean LG Optimus 2x, anyway.

Now someone port the original Deus Ex, please!

I tried Modern Combat 3 from gameloft the other day. Just can't get used to touchscreen for these types of games. Would be great if there was an officially licenced android bluetooth controller. and perhaps a little gaming stand. Would go against their philosophy I guess, but I would pay for it.

Touch screen gaming on a device with joypad/buttons. Interesting.

Just because you can do it doesn't make it a good idea.

    @Widge

I was wondering about that. It'd be nice if they were able to support it, but presumably their main concern is getting it working at all, rather than getting it working specifically on the Xperia Play.

Still, if they did get it working I'd be quite happy to see that.

Why that map? The only good thing about that map is hiding in one of the cubicles, otherwise its shit. There's a pun there somewhere... why not Office? Or Dust? You know, a proper map.

FPS-type games work adequately on touchscreen-only devices, provided the gameplay is slowed down a bit to compensate. As such, Counterstrike is a really bad example in practice, but a worthwhile technical exercise.

Something more considerately paced, like Deus Ex, or Ultima Underworld, or a new game built on similar principles, would work much more nicely. I had great hopes of this after the Epic Citadel demo, so the set-path Fruit Ninja nature of Infinity Blade was a disappointment to me (uh-oh, I think I may have outed myself in an android thread).

@MENTAL1ST - Yeah, why can't they put them on Megaupload.... oh! Oh yeah!
  • alexbulluk #14 4 months ago

Nice! Shame I don't own an android device. Seems there's a lot of cool stuff for them.

Perhaps one day this will come to iOS.

    Is this not illegal?

keep getting a bad download, can't try it on my asus prime :(if anyones got it can you ad it to a decent download site pease ?
  • infernox1 #17 4 months ago

@Benno They don't work for standard FPS, what about skill based FPS where the emphasis is on aiming for headshots? Yeah, I have no idea why they did this.

It's a little distressing that the first reaction for many is that they can't imagine playing Counter Strike without a keyboard and mouse without even stopping to think about the fact that it's possible to even run it on a phone. There are probably more out there wondering why they're using a phone to do something other than make phone calls.

I'm still quite taken aback to see something like this even working. Until fairly recently I had the written off all mobile gaming as something for ordinary people to waste a few minutes rather than gamers who want to spend some quality time with a game. But then GTA3 launched on my phone and I was amazed to see that it worked. I'm now more interested in what I could play on my phone than ever before.

Works pretty well for a plodding game like Nazi Zombies, but competitive one-shot-kill MP? No way, man.

Can you still do the radio commands?

"Get out of there, its gonna blow!"

    "Negative"

@Architect_z Good times, f**king good times.

Wow. I've just tried this. Pretty amazing to be honest. Not sure how long it'll keep my attention for but it is very cool to show. Try it! There is no reason not to!

I take it all back, dust and aztec are in the Armv7 version. Runs like crap on the bog standard Desire but looks great.

All I saw was two thumbs...

Perhaps the article should make this a little clearer: "Just a quick note: this is not a port, just a Unity game that uses CS resources in places."

And as such, perhaps the legality of this should be investigated a little further too...?
