Syphon Filter 4 out winter 2012, UK mag claims

Set for reveal alongside God of War 4 in February.

PlayStation 3 exclusive Syphon Filter 4 launches winter 2012, UK magazine Play claims.

The game, alongside God of War 4, will be announced in February, Play (via Sillegamer.com) said in its latest issue.

"As far as our spies tell us, Syphon Filter 4 will be announced and released during 2012 - they're not often wrong either," wrote the magazine. "Developed by SCE London Studio (once thought to be Sony Bend), it will see a return to the world of shooting, espionage and Gabe Logan's superb name."

London Studio, established in 2001, is SCE's largest internal development studio in Europe. It is the brains behind EyeToy, SingStar, EyePet and PlayStation Home.

This isn't the first we've heard of Syphon Filter 4. In May 2011 an accidentally published PlayStation Blog post claimed it would "revolutionise" stealth with a new engine developed by Sony London. Is it a reboot?

Syphon Filter is a third-person action game in the ilk of Metal Gear Solid and Splinter Cell: you're a stealthy soldier who achieves the impossible. In Syphon Filter's case, you fill the boots of Gabe Logan.

We've heard plenty about God of War 4 too, including mention it features online multiplayer.

I'm fairly sure Kratos already killed everyone!

    God of War... 4?

What happens, he gets sent back to hell AGAIN and has to battle his way up to the top of Mount Olympus? It worked for the last 3 games (+ the PSP games) so why not do it again?

On the other hand, it'll be nice to see a proper new Syphon Filter.

Kratos needs to retire - he massacred most of the Greek pantheon and died 3 times throughout the series. I really hope Santa Monica knows what they're doing. Both Stig Asmussen and T.C Carson stated they feel Kratos needs a break, and I agree.

If they have to continue the series, I feel they'd do better to focus exclusively on Deimos, or at least give him his own trilogy. He hardly had any screen time at the end of GoS and he could provide a fresh perspective without radically altering the franchise by focusing on different mythology, like Norse or Egyptian.

Woop Syphon Filter! That game is filled with Nostalgia for me. I remember him running like a total douche :')

I wonder if Syphon Filter will get a new main character or will it be a prequel.

I've been waiting on a new Syphon Filter since Dark Mirror on PS2 (never had a PSP) - really enjoyed it, and always felt the series was very underrated. I think GoWIV's a given too, although would like a new character at the helm instead if Kratos.

    "Developed by SCE London Studio"

That would be a very interesting turn-up were it true, as they've worked iirc almost exclusively on casual games for a long time now. Would be good to see if they could handle a game more geared toward to core market.

I totally loved the PS and psp games, still do in fact. The only proper ps2 game was toss though. Will keep a keen eye.

I love God of War but seriously by now there is nobody left that Kratos could fight, right? We've got a total of 5 God of War games nowand they are brilliant. So, unless the developers don't come up with a new approach, there is no need for another title.

Syphon Filter 1&2 were great, the 3rd one was ok but didn't quite reach the same level in my opinion; Omega Strain was a disappointment.
I never played the PSP ones (always hoped for an HD remake to correct that mistake) so after so many years I genuinely welcome the possibility to reunite with the series.
No hate for Kratos, believe me, but I can't see how another game with him can happen after the ending of the 3rd; I still believe that Santa Monica will keep its promises and not use him again for the next God of War.
Anyway as a PS owner I really can't complain because both franchises gave me a lot of pleasant hours, and a lot of fond memories... especially Syphon Filter.

Please don't mess Syphon Filter up. Really enjoyed the psp games and it's about time Gabe was back on the big screen.

Syphon Filter 1 & 2 were actually made by a small Japanese developer but I guess they must of shutdown before SF3 and 989 Studios took over and like Twisted Metal didn't do very well.

While it's good that PS3 is getting some exclusives unlike a certain other console I won't mention, we're rapidly heading towards z-list territory. First Twisted Metal, now Syphon Filter. What's next? Motor Toon Grand Prix? Dog's Life 2 perhaps?

Fair enough if you like them, but I can hear a barrel being scraped somewhere.

It's been a looooong while since a good home console Syphon Filter game. If it ends up being good I really can't wait. The PSP games were brilliant but I still wished there was a proper console release at some point. Omega Strain was crap simple as. Don't know what they were thinking by taking it online.

Also, why are they calling it a stealth series in the same ilk as MGS or Splinter Cell? Syphon Filter games are shooty as fuck! And that's what makes them good. Yes there are stealth elements but they are more in line with what Uncharted offers which is level specific rather than a proper choice. Shooting was the best part about Syphon Filter and I hope they keep that focus.

I don't want another God of War. Let it go seriously. Love the franchise, but having completed every single one, I don't want to have to go back and level up my weapons for a SIXTH time after they ALWAYS manage to lose their power at the beginning of every single game!

That, and the fact that there is nothing left to tell. If they want to make a new character and a new story why not just call it a new IP, give it a new name and set it within the hack and slash/adventure genre? No point calling it God of War 4 and then changing everything.

    @NineOverSeven

twisted metal is very popular in the states, and alot of people like syphon filter, dont see any barrels been scraped when Sony have a tresure chest of untouched IP like ....

    The Getaway
    Colony Wars
    Jak & Daxter
    Lemmings
    Cool Boarders
    Disc World
    G-Police
    Dark Cloud

There's still alot of good IP they've left to rot
  • berelain #19 4 months ago

@AnthonyDaniels Unfortunately several of those games on your list aren't Sony IPs. However, I do think you're right; there are plenty of Sony games that could be revived that really would be scraping the barrel.

EDIT: actually, it seems that Sony does hold the licenses for those IPs. I sit corrected!

Anyone else but SCE London Studio, "The Getaway: Black Monday" was awful. I'm sure Sony Bend could have been working on Syphon Filter for PS3 and Golden Abyss.

I love God of War, as long as the game is great I am fine with it. If they actually can figure a clever way of continuing the series then I am definitely fine with it.

I'm also excited for Halo 4

Those are HD remakes, MS says.

Loved that Park level in syphon filter 1 where you were equipped with night vision goggles and a sniper rifle. The first 2 games has some great stealth set pieces
