Resident Evil 6 Trailer: Blow By Blow

Three heroes, three gameplay styles?

Last night, Capcom gave gamers a first taster of Resident Evil 6, showing off a decent amount of gameplay amongst the explosions.

The game appears to be divided in three: three protagonists, three play styles and three locations.

1

Leon S. Kennedy.

Our first glimpse of Resident Evil 6 opens with Leon S. Kennedy, hero of Resident Evil 2, aiming a gun towards the camera.

Leon was centre-stage for the series' critical high-point, Resident Evil 4, so it's notable that Capcom has framed the trailer's first chunk around him.

What is he aiming at?

2

The President.

"Bio-organic weapons are a global threat", growls the President of the United States, as we switch to a flashback.

Resident Evil 6 seems to continue the series' slow expansion of scope from the original's hush-hush experiments and zombies in a lone, spooky house to Resident Evil 5's storyline - which had bio-organic weapons in the hands of terrorists posing an overt threat to the world.

"We have to start working with the rest of the world," the President continues, mentioning the "Raccoon City incident" - the Resident Evil series' origins. "I'm going to tell them everything."

3

The ex-President.

A helpful US President? Of course he's going to snuff it. Here we see what Leon was aiming at. The poor President is looking a little ripe.

Presumably his good-natured desire to blab about the dangers of covert bio-weaponry has marked him out for immediate zombification.

The President approaches Leon in a shuffling manner, dragging his feet across the floor. 'Proper' Resident Evil zombies are back, and the President is one of them.

4

Leon's new partner.

"I always valued your friendship, Leon," the President continues, his zombie self intercut with him in flashback. This is presumably the same President whose daughter, Ashley Graham, was rescued by Leon in Resident Evil 4. More on her later.

Leon's got a new female partner, which Capcom has named as US government agent Helena Harper. Like Leon, she looks unlikely to believe the zombie President's claims that it's just jam around his mouth.

Bang! The President lunges at her, and a gunshot is fired. Did Leon just pop the President?

5

Resident Evil 6.

The new Resident Evil 6 logo appears on screen. It looks rusty and covered in cobwebs. Do they indicate a more spooky turn for the series after the shooting-heavy Resident Evil 5?

Now Leon's in some kind of dark facility. There's an American flag and some official-looking papers. Are we underneath the Whitehouse?

Cut to Leon padding down a dark, deserted corridor to ominous music. This one shot has more more creepy atmosphere than the whole of Resi 5's sunlit African setting.

6

Atmosphere.

"This is all my fault," Leon's partner moans. Maybe it's the suit and lipgloss but there's something very 24 about her.

"I did this," she sighs. Is she referring to the President's untimely end? Or perhaps to the scenes of firey devastation outside?

Jack-knifed lorries block the road and burnt-out cars litter an urban street. Dark silhouettes of people stand around.

7

Like Racoon City all over again.

It's a scene that could come directly from Resident Evil 2, but we're not in Racoon City any more.

We're somewhere called Tall Oaks, and that place has a station.

Leon creeps inside a train tunnel in what could be our first glimpse of actual gameplay. The scene is again pitch black, with shadows of upcoming attackers stylishly cast on the curved wall of the train tunnel.

8

Tall Oaks Station.

Do his attackers move like zombies? It's hard to tell. Some seemed to be armed with crowbars and other objects.

Leon's updated character model looks very like Sawyer from Lost. Capcom has said that 10 years have now passed since the original Racoon City incident, four since we last saw Leon in Resident Evil 4. It shows on his tired, stubbly face.

9

Leon S. Kennedy - the S stands for Sawyer.

"What are you talking about?" Leon demands of his partner, confused by her admission that she had a hand in the unfolding events. His partner looks away, guiltily. Drama!

The scene switches again, this time to a grey government-looking office. It's Agent Hunnigan, the glasses-wearing agent that Leon flirted with throughout the early section of Resident Evil 4.

"90 per cent of the population of Tall Oaks has been infected with the virus," she tells Leon and partner via a high-tech form of Skype. "That's about 70,000 hostiles."

10

Agent Hunnigan.

Another section of small town America infected with a zombie virus? It is Resident Evil 2! "This is Racoon City all over again!" Leon affirms.

It all looks rather lovely though. Swathes of zombies shuffle through burning streets/get run down by a truck/get blown up in a montage of undead ass-whupping.

In one shot, Leon appears injured, holding his chest.

11

Leon injured?

A few sections of what looks like actual gameplay follow, with Leon on the streets of Tall Oaks, his neck at one point being jumped upon by a passing zombie, and back in that railway tunnel, again being pushed to the ground.

The camera retains its behind-the-shoulder Resident Evil 4/5/Revelations setting, while Leon still has a penchant for cool-looking jackets.

13

Right on time.

Your handgun's laser target appears on the enemy itself, although there's no laser beam.

Outside a Gothic, church-like building, Leon delivers a roundhouse kick to a cluster of undead.

Back in the train tunnel, a herd of zombies get run over by a passing train. Handy!

14

Leon's dark-haired friend.

"Want to tell me what's in there?" Leon asks a dark-haired lady. "It's better if I show you," she replies. Oo-er.

The action changes to Hong Kong, one of the other locations highlighted on Capcom teaser blog NoHopeLeft.com.

Aerial shots show off the neon-lit cityscape. Above it, a helicopter holding original Resident Evil hero Chris Redfield.

15

Camera shy.

"I can't keep running away," Chris announces, as explosions rock the skyline.

"I have to face the truth, accept responsibility."

Does Chris blame himself for not eradicating the original Racoon City threat, allowing bio-weapons to spread? Has something happened to his partner Jill again? Where is Jill?

Chris runs through a beautifully lit Hong Kong street, pushing a cameraman roughly aside as he receives new orders to "suppress the bio-terror outbreak".

16

Masked non-zombies.

Chris retains his Resident Evil 5 look and appears to still be a member of the Bio-terrorism Security Assessment Alliance (BSAA), whose acronym is nowhere near as good as STARS.

Another montage of scenes as Chris and a team of around four others storm through scenes of devastation. A man's arm erupts with some kind of bio-weaponry mutation, similar to Krauser in Resi 4.

Chris encounters a gang of masked enemies who fire upon him with automatic weapons. These look like humans, not zombies. Are they the perpetrators of the bio-terror attack?

17

Gears of Evil.

Chris ducks behind cover as he's fired upon, it all looks very Gears of War.

Two minutes in, and Capcom introduces a third protagonist. He's pale, scarred and sports a buzz-cut, so he'll probably turn out to be evil at some point.

He seems at ease taking down enemy B.O.W.s (Bio-Organic Weapons) with some ninja-style moves, marking a third play-style for the game. Presumably chapters of the game will intercut between the three?

18

Resident Evil 6's third protagonist.

"I was better off as a mercenary," the new protagonist groans, as his blonde-haired partner gives him a first aid spray, just as Sheva aided Chris is Resi 5.

The girl sounds exactly like Ashley Graham. Is it her? Four years later, is the President's daughter now an action hero? Or is she simply on a quest to find out who caused her father's death?

"I won't let anything happen to you," probably-Ashley says. "The world needs you."

19

Ashley Graham?

"No, not me. Just my blood," the protagonist replies. "And the world can have it, as long as someone ponies up the dough." British-sounding accent? Definitely evil.

Online speculation suggests our new friend is Alex Wesker, brother of Albert Wesker who, for reasons which will be clear if you've played Resident Evil 5, probably won't be returning.

Alex Wesker, if this is him, has been mentioned in the games before but never seen. He and Albert were two of many siblings, but the only survivors of their genetic experimentation.

20

It's unclear where this third section of the game is set. Somewhere snowy, apparently.

Certainly, "Alex" shows some superhuman abilities, including being able to make ridiculously long Matrix-like leaps and survive.

He also seems to be facing the largest gallery of uglies to take down, including some dramatically mutated people and a huge troll-like boss.

"How many of our men are dead because of that bitch?" shouts Chris, the action snapping back to China, as the trailer begins a fast-paced montage to the finish. Who is Chris talking about? Has Jill done something bad again?

21

Ada?

The final scenes feature snatches of Las Plagas-style head-exploding enemies and an even more gigantic El Gigante boss.

There are also quick flashes of Leon fighting a 'proper' zombie cop, Chris in a tank and 'Alex' jumping on to the windshield of an escaping small plane.

Just before the end comes a shot of Leon, Helena and someone wearing red being thrown around inside a falling train car. Internet speculation pegs the person wearing red as long-time Leon love interest Ada Wong, but it's impossible to tell.

The game looks well into development, a fact supported by Capcom's release date - 20th November 2012 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, with a PC version to follow later. Watch the trailer in full below.

This series has degenerated into beastly tripe.

Poor show from Capcom to repurpose their horror game into a ghastly action title to appeal to the dim whitted CoD audience
  • berelain #4 4 months ago

seriously... what the hell? Are we going to get this frame-by-frame account of every single trailer from now on, just for those who can't be arsed / aren't able to watch the video itself? There's very little deconstruction here; just a few 'oooh, maybe this is this' guesstimations that don't tell anyone anything and that have likely been all over every Resident Evil fansite since the trailer first appeared last night.

I don't really understand the point of putting what seems to be three notably different game styles together.

RE4, Gears of zombies, God of zombies. It makes it pretty likely most will have one or more game sections they dislike and putting it alongside ones they do like will just make them hate it more.

What I don't understand most though is, why the action beat em up which hasn't occured anywhere in the series? Why not make one of the sections play like the REmake/RE0?

In other news, Capcom announced that several hundred ominous-looking doors that can only be opened by solving puzzles are to be made redundant. Most are taking their settlement and going to find quiet places in the country to live. Their chances for finding employment elsewhere look slim.

Chances are it will be a good action game and i will most likely still pick it up, its just not the Resident Evil I (we) grew up with, but surely this comes as no surprise to people RE4 and RE5 were a new breed of Resident Evil, and sold rather well as i recall.

Its good to see what looks like actual Zombies, the cover and gun mechanic doesn’t look too farfetched as long as the opposition are for example Umbrella Mercs and not Zombies themselves that could work eg Breaking into an Umbrella facility to take it to 'da man'. I also wouldn’t object to some form of stealth, sneak kills on unsuspecting lone Zombies to save some ammo wouldn’t be too out of plae if this is to be a bit more action based, then again i might have just been playing too much Deux Ex....

The return of T-virus style zombies instantly makes it more appealing and worth keeping an eye on for me than 5.
  • jack24 #24 4 months ago

I don't know, Leon and Chris' gameplay seem very much single player, whereas when it shows the skin head type's gameplay it looks like co op style revive animations and all. Fingers crossed on separate co op campaign!
  • Porko_Rossi #25 4 months ago

If the Resident Evil series had not tried to evolve at all you lot that are saying,"I'm not buying it cos it's not a survival horror" would be moaning about them repeating themselves instead. For all you know at this point it could be a survival horror game.

  • SHEEPISH47 #28 4 months ago

Not gonna lie, I loved 5, bring on more of that. Fair play the original games were stunning, but things have changed. I reckon if they were to be remade they wouldn't be as popular.People would rage at the camera angles, the save system and the difficulty level. Just accept Resi's change of pace and gameplay you never know this game might be amazing, perhaps something we've never seen before.

Looks like The Last of Us is going to be my next Resident Evil.

I'm sure this will be a fantastic game and all, but it's just not what I want from the RE franchise.

Saddens me that Resident Evil and Final Fantasy, two of my favourite series of all time, do little to excite me now.

EDIT: And to everyone saying that the series had to evolve this way: No it didn't. It could have evolved and gotten better without completely changing what it was about. Just look at The Last of Us: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLGxubfC1Ik

Capcom have been taking a leaf out of the Modern Warfare "More cities! More things that explode! More playable characters! More terrorist attacks!" playbook.
  • natec87 #31 4 months ago

Three co-op stories: Leon & Helena, Chris & grunt, "Alex" & Ashley, all meeting up at the same location for the endgame. Here's hoping for a ton of cameos and a few shocks (if that's possible) if this indeed is the series' finalé.
  • comedyjack #32 4 months ago

Gamesradar's trailer breakdown believes that the third playable is in fact Leon after possible forced experiments (the reference to his blood and him being important refers to residue from his Las Plagas infection, they say).
  • huckan #33 4 months ago

The one thing I want when I'm playing Resident Evil is to feel alone and lost with only my wits to save me! Rather have a remake of the first few in the series.
  • natec87 #34 4 months ago

A dynamic camera angle and less exploding barrels was also on my wants list. Same camera system and a cover system was not the way forward Capcom. Still I'm excited. And nice piece EG, I enjoy a good trailer breakdown.
  • natec87 #35 4 months ago

@comedyjack That could be a nice twist. Would explain why that person is with Ashley and she already knows how valuable he is (the world needs you) after her experiences in RE4.

I don't hold too much hope, but... it might be good. Might. Hopefully it's also all co-op again, as that was the best bit of 5...

And I hope this truly is the wrap-up of the main story. It's enough now, Capcom; 1-3 and Code Veronica are very very dated now,and 4 and 5 are getting that way already. So let's move on to something new.
  • eminusx #37 4 months ago

    looks alright.
different play styles could be interesting if they implement it well enough, with some style and not just segment follows segment follows segment.

Npe. Almost certainly talking about Ada. Capcom have already confirmed she will appear in some capacity, and there's a big dangler after what she stole in RE4.

  • AnotherIdiot #43 4 months ago

I get the feeling this series is lost forever. Come to think of it, the last time i played a good RE game was on the PS1. I suppose i could mention code veronica, but that was a dreamcast game ported to the PS2, and besides they don't deserve any mercy. RE is no better than the many other PSone franchises that have been shitted up and ruined since then.
  • bemani247 #44 4 months ago

Holy shit this looks intense, sure its gone from survival horror to fast paced shooter, but im seriously drooling in anticipation!
  • SpaceMonkey77 #45 4 months ago

I think this is going to be a lot better than RE5. In a post Walking Dead world, I think that Capcom have a lot to consider. I welcome new characters, and hope to god the writing is better.

One of the RE5's good points was the close quarters moves, and I'm glad they are keeping that stuff in.

I hope it sells well and will buy in November.
  • khand #46 4 months ago

this is not resident evil anymore. just another boring shooter for this generation kids so they can kill everything that moves in high speed action and drop some saliva when they say-"wow graphics is awesome dude.YEAH YEAH!" stupid and boring.capcom please if you want to make action games leave resident evil alone and go help microsoft on new gears of war or something like that. i just want to say goodbye to old and good resident evil (sequels 1-3)!

  • mornegroth #48 4 months ago

At first I was a bit sceptical about this whole three character business. Now I'm not so sure.

It might work if done correctly, the only way I'm seeing this working is if they get separated into three different campaigns (like back on RE2, when it was possible to play with Leon and Claire but not both at the same time).

If I start playing this to find out that I'm being plucked out of character, à là Call of Duty, every couple of minutes, then it will surely suck for me.
  • hyuhek #49 4 months ago

Resident Evil 6 - cautious, but it could be good.

But what is Capcom doing to the franchise - four games coming in 2012 alone? Revelations, Operation Raccoon City, 6 and Chronicles HD collection?

I remember when people complained about Ass Creed becoming an annual title, because it over-saturated the marketplace.

What is this doing to the franchise then?!

You'd think there was some retarded rule somewhere saying that you can only like either old or new resi. Old style resident evil was brilliant but if you don't appreciate what resi4 did to revitalise the series and action games in general then in my opinion you're not a resi fan.

This is in response to all the 'proper resi fans' who seem to always feel it is their the duty to mourn the loss of 'proper survival horror resident evil'. Godammit, does anyone not remember how stale that gameplay had gotten by code veronica!!?

I personally can't bloody wait XD
  • Serk101 #52 4 months ago

Does anybody still remember the second Resident Evil 5 trailer were we saw a lone Chris Redfield fighting the Manjini? Then in the months to release we discover he will be getting a partner with forced co-op. Well I'm getting the same vibe with Leon's scenario. If in the coming months we find out the co-op is forced on us again and not optional then my cash is being spent elsewhere. Resident Evil 4 is one of the greatest games I've ever experienced but Resident Evil 5 was just a frustrating abomination in everyway mainly thanks to the forced co-op in single player mode. Last thing I wanted to do was protect a dumb A.I controlled partner in the heat of battle. I just hope Capcom see sense and make the co-op optional rather than forced this time.
  • o_a_morgan #53 4 months ago

Not Ashley, confirmed as Sherry Birkin. That bitch chris mentioned is probably Jill as he aint crossed paths with ada. Dead Space reinvented survival horror so people moaning about resi having to change direction is rubbish. They are aiming at this shooting generation of gamers that want quick fixes of blowing shit up (which i aint turning my nose up to, as i enjoy battlefield). I mean a cover button? C'MON.
  • 32768Colours #54 4 months ago

    Perhaps they're hedging their bets?

Make three games in one, see which style people like the most?

I know that's what I'd do if I was trying to carefully nurture one of gaming's most treasured franchises. Particularly if the previous instalment was largely considered a disappointment. Yep, definitely a good idea to try everything all at once and see what sticks...

  • Enaksan #62 4 months ago

@Cjail How so? The movies share nothing but the name pretty much, whereas this at least has recognisable characters and is continuing on from the previous titles.
It admitedly seems more focused on the action side of things these days, but with the range of paces shown in the trailer, this could be what we were hoping for from RE5 after the magnificent RE4.
Im excited ahyhoo!! Pretty much just glad to see Leon back!!
  • Enaksan #63 4 months ago

@Porko_Rossi I have to agree, as much as i love the older games, having only played RE2 +3 again recently I think the newer games have transitioned perfectly.
RE5 was a slight disappointment in that it didn't really add anything to what 4 established, where as this looks like its at least trying to mix it up a little.
    Bring on Nov 20!!
  • Enaksan #64 4 months ago

@comedyjack I thought Cooper said he thought the thing CHASING 'Alex' was Leon, due soley to his hair looking kind of the same? The first time i saw it I thought there was a similarity too, to be honest, brings to mind Steve Burnside from Code Veronica.
Though to be fair i have also seen some people saying they thought Scar face was Leon too. Seems strange they'd put him in the trailer twice though either way.

  • Enaksan #67 4 months ago

@Porko_Rossi I can't wait as well! Just been watching the trailer on my Xbox again (only saw it on my piddly iPod screen before) and it looks even more awesome!!
Also, at the end of the article, it's questions wether that's Ada in the red. I can't see how a zombie dude with a red shirt could be confused for her!!
It's not too far away, but I can see myself getting too wrapped up in the prelaunch hype for this already!! :-)

Wow, there was an advert fo rit on the telly last night when I was watching the american football, thats a bit early considering it's not out till the back end of November.
