Capcom has "big plans" for Street Fighter's 25th birthday

Ken you believe it's been that long?

Capcom has something special planned to mark the 25th anniversary of the Street Fighter franchise.

An official birthday logo was unveiled on its blog earlier today, which you can check out below, though concrete details on exactly what sort of merriment fans can expect was cruelly withheld until a later date.

"Can you believe Ryu has been throwing fireballs and scarring chests for a quarter century?" read the post.

"For 25 years Street Fighter's iconic hero has wandered the globe in search of the perfect battle, and to commemorate his quest - not to mention the millions of fans who've followed him every step of the way - we're preparing some big plans for 2012.

"The full details of this international celebration are still to come, but I can at least share the official logo that'll emblazon all related products through the year."

For those keeping score, 30th August is apparently the series' official birthday.

One thing we know for sure - crossover dust-up Street Fighter X Tekken will be the next significant outing for the franchise, launching on 9th March.

  • DrStrangelove #8 4 months ago

I just wish I'd hear anything about Tekken vs SF, much more looking forward to that. But I don't have the feeling it will ever Ca... come.
  • johnson81 #9 4 months ago

    @bikmate

That was my first thought, but they'll probably release Street Fighter 2 for the 87th time.
  • DurzoBlint #10 4 months ago

An Alpha remake or a compilation of the pre-4 games is all I can imagine with SSF2THDR and SF3:3SO in existence. I'm sure this'll be a mixed bag, whatever happens.
  • JeroenZM #11 4 months ago

Would like to see a proper remake of the first Street Fighter. And release the EX games on PSN/XBLA already; never played those.
  • coderkind #12 4 months ago

I'll be keeping an Eagle eye out for news. Maybe a little Birdie will tell me?
  • The-Bodybuilder #13 4 months ago

I'm not worried about what they have in store, it's in good hands.
    Ain't no worries, akuma metata.
  • Jay-ITFC #14 4 months ago

Super Street Fighter IV: Anniversary Edition almost seems too easy...
  • inutaihanyou #17 4 months ago

@DrStrangelove Namco said it was on the way. It'll be here eventually
  • Bander #18 4 months ago

2012 is also the 15th year of Darkstalkers NOT getting a new game! I expect Capcom to celebrate this by continuing to pretend the franchise and its fans don't exist.

Ken you believe it's been that long?

    Ryu better believe it
  • kickerconspiracy #20 4 months ago

How much will the Adons be?
  • Mattattattatt #21 4 months ago

25 years? Well, Guile be damned. But I've bought so many versions of SF already, I don't know if I need to Bison more...
  • riceNpea #22 4 months ago

i've heard a whisper that the surprise is a new Street Fighter sandbox JRPG, featuring bald space marines, set in Vegas after a virus has turned the populous into zombies.
  • Ryze #23 4 months ago

    Bargain bins!

    10 more SF/II/III/IV versions incoming!
  • Ryze #24 4 months ago

    @EvilAspirin

Damn! I was about to type that one, then checked and found yours :(

    :)

    edit:

    What hasn't happened yet?

If they could release Marvel vs. Capcom, Marvel Super Heroes, X-Men and Marvel Super Heroes vs. Streetfighter all together in a compilation, then that'd be special.

Not likely at all however, due to licensing.

In terms of Streetfighter... well... I'll wait for the surprise, but after Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, it's hard to retain much excitement, and to go out and spend on launch day when I feel like I'm being pissed around.

Comment EX Plus Deltoid : O -no Another Pun! Edition

    < press start >

Akuma on here all excited but { 2-hit combo ! } Hakan believe Capcom would be Abel to complete another game by year's end. Dan { Taunt ! } there's the matter of whether to keep the old animation frames intact, Oro { Link ! } Hugo make them a -new as with SSF2:HD? All the artwork would need to be re -done from the arcade version's 320 x 400 for this Gen { LP -> HP } . Ryu think the average Guy { Link ! } Mike { Link ! } Bison copies of that to make a worthwhile return?

Personal favourites are "SF: Zero 2 Dash" and "SF vs X-Men" on the Saturn with the 4MB expansion cartridge. Oh what heady days! However as the quality of the hardware Rose, the same could be Sean { Parry ! } in the design of the gameplay and I can now happily Rolento { Pipe Bomb ! } playing "SSF4: Arcade Edition" online for my fix. Ah well, Retsu what happens anyway. Capcom Ken lay out the anniversary bombast but a little Birdie tells me to expect them to turn around Zangieff the average Joe a bunch of plastic and towels.

    -

As for the Tekken game, don't get me started on that Mishi -mash of dial a combo and ten strings. Loved "Tekken 2" when it came out at the time but the new cross-over smells like another typical money grab. Numb -co couldn't design themselves out of a pissed on paper bag if they had to, and it's a shame that the last really innovative 2 -player fighting games "Tobal 2" and "VF3: TB" were a failure on console.

I cant wait to buy the anniversary addition and then watch as they release the full version a few months later

Anniversary Edition < Ultimate Anniversary Edition
  • bionic_v2 #28 4 months ago

Street Fighter II Turbo for the Snes was always the hi-lite for me.
I've yet to buy a 3D SF game. Maybe if they release something fancy I could be converted.

More salami-slice DLC seems a certain bet! I'd better get down to the Ibukis.
  • BellyFullOfHell #30 4 months ago

Jesus, 25 years? Clunky and broken though it is, I still love SF1 in a weird way. Remake would be nice.

  • Ranger101 #34 4 months ago

There isn't going to be another SF4 - Arcade edition is the last one. Capcom are aware of overfilling the market, they're not releasing any other fighter this year, after SFxT.

The Anniversary celebration product will probably be a compilation disc (SF1, SF2 HF/HDRemix, SF3:oE and maybe SSFIV on 1 disc), costume packs and a lot of normal merch (T-shirts etc.)

Capcom are not ignoring Darkstalkers - Ono is keen on it, hence the inclusion of Dalkstalkers characters in MvC3, but there actually isn't as much fan demand as you think there is - more loud voices than lots of voices.

TxSF is in pre-production - you won't hear a peep about it until Tekken Tag Tournament 2 is released at the end of the Year. Otherwise they face underminding their main product. This is why Soul Calibur 5 is out this month, and TTT2 is out almost a year later.

    Hadouken.

If it's new content i'll have to be prepared to Sakura copy. Juri'd about things like these and next thing you know it's a limited release and you've missed the boat. Or maybe they're just Yang-king our chains with such rumours?
  • anthonypappa #36 4 months ago

just bought SSFIV and a saturn pad for ps3 5 minutes ago.

    what is arcade edition?

i can cancel SSFIV and get the arcade edition for an extra £4...

    worth it?
    Edited by anthonypappa at 12/01/12 @ 10:58
  • McBradders #37 4 months ago

@anthonypappa yes worth it. The DLC to make it from Super to Arcade Edition is considerably more expensive.
  • thisisatempaccount #38 4 months ago

@Ranger101 Great post, but you unfortunately you did forget the obligatory character name pun. There's not many left to choose from, though, so I understand you not wanting to stick your Necro-ut.

Okay, sorry, that was terrible. I'll get Makoto.
  • anthonypappa #39 4 months ago

    cheers, ordered.

looking forward to playing it with the six buttons again like the good old days.

even the ps3 D-pad is shit (and i know people complain about the 360 D-pad!) but without the diagonals, they are both crap for fighting games. and using shoulder buttons in place of two face buttons is just wrong.

    @BellyFullOfHell

I don't think I'll be Abel to afford yet another Street Fighter rehash!

All i know is they'll be a lot of CROSS COUNTER!!! staff when people return their old copies of the Arcade edition when Extreme Arcade edition is released.
