Online movement for Dark Souls PC port gathers pace

Petition: "PC gamers love unforgiving, hardcore games."

An online movement calling for a belated PC release for From Software PS3/Xbox 360 action RPG Dark Souls is gathering pace.

After a thread on publisher Namco's forums and a Rock Paper Shotgun follow-up piece stoked the coals, covetous PC gamers have since started an official petition which has picked up more than 7000 signatures in just seven hours.

The petition's mission statement reads:

"A port of this game has a high chance of being extremely successful for From Software and Namco Bandai. Given the sales of games such as The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim and The Witcher, there is a large market for games like this. PC gamers love unforgiving, hardcore games."

It also mentions that the added technical horsepower offered by desktops could make the game easier to play.

"A port may also mean that the area's in the game, such as Blighttown, won't suffer from slowdown. An online oriented video game is also perfect for the capabilities of a PC.

"Steam would also be suitable venue provided the game is sold at a reasonable price for a late port. Steamworks could provide a strong and easy to use online infrastructure."

We've approached Namco Bandai for comment and will update should it choose to offer one.

From Software's vicious adventure coasted into Eurogamer's recent Games of 2011 run-down.

"Not all games have to be for everyone, despite capitalism's persuasive whispering in the ear of so many publishers," wrote Simon Parkin in his Dark Souls reappraisal.

"Dark Souls is a game for players willing to advance themselves, not just their avatar; to learn and perfect a skill, to improve. In this way, it silently summons the demons of an entire medium, before shooing them away with its single-minded philosophy."

Thanks Fred, really glad this got a mention on EG, I'm sure I wasn't the only one that sent it in in the hope that they could help spread the word.

I can really imagine no way that this wouldn't be a success on PC, it is exactly the sort of game that tends to do well on that platform. There are control issues to be worked out for sure, but nothing that couldn't be overcome.

Exposing Dark Souls to an even wider audience has simply got to be a good thing for the games industry, and an even better thing for gamers themselves! Please make it happen.

If From Software was willing to port Ninja Blade of all games to PC, they should port Dark Souls. If for nothing else so people can play it with a consistant frame rate.
  • uknortherner2000 #8 5 months ago

MaxFN - Do the world a favour and fuck off please.

I'd like to see this ported to PC, but going off Namco Bandai's past record, it'll be crippled with SecuROM DRM and activation limits, sadly.

@MaxFN Tru dat! Piracy doesn't exist on consoles at all does it...
  • Daeltaja #10 5 months ago

As long as it's outsourced, I've no problem with that, as I hope they're busy working on the next installment?
  • Collymilad #11 5 months ago

    Fallacy.

PC Gamers love MAKING OUT they are hardcore and love these types of games, but my guess is DS will sell less on PC that console by quite a large margin.

Downvote freely btw, I know what you guys are like.

@uknortherner2000 nah, i just wanted to catch a lot of dislikes. It would be great to have Dark Souls on PC, more people will play it!

@MattEdWithCheese yes, piracy do exists on consoles, but piracy is a bigger problem on PC not only because it's easier to pirate games, I think it's because some idiots like Ubisoft really need learn how to treat they customer.

TBH I cant really see NB / From making a PC port of this as most Japanese just dont do gaming on the PC unless only Visual Novels and Fan made doujin. For the Japanese the PC is for porn, I mean FFS they dont even use modern forum PHP. So lets face it DS on PC wont sell in Japan, then again western PC gamers are crying out for Japanese game, just look at the success of Carpe Fulger

The lack of Japanese games on the PC is the main reason I finally bought a 360 last year after alsot a decade of been PC only

For what its worth, Ive signed the pertition, I have DS on the 360 but I would rebuy it for PC just so I dont have to pay MS any money for XBL Gold.

Also the game doesnt run perfect on the 360 there is some slowdown and it could benefit from PC servers

The fact that this game wasn't released for the PC in the first place is baffling. But people seem to be signing that petiotion like crazy so maybe it's not too much to wish for after all!

@UKNortherner i know nowt about DRM but why does this matter?

Please don't let the trolls drag this thread down, they are trying to do it over on Namco's forum too (which BTW is currently receiving the highest traffic ever seen on the site).

  • TrevHead #18 5 months ago

@itsfuzzy So true, Japanese publishers detest "losing sales" to piracy, more so than even Ubisoft and are very pro DRM, just look at Capcom

My guess is that they got sick of piracy on the DS and PSP and cant see the merits of PC gaming that has even worse piracy
  • bikmate #19 5 months ago

After their legal battle with CDPR I'm boycotting games published by Namco.

But that doesn't mean I would support a port.

And they're using Skyrim as an example? :/

As much as I love it, it's mind-bogglingly easy, even on Master difficulty. It's a world apart from Dark Souls in so many ways.
  • Jolly_Armadillo #27 5 months ago

Not sure how the controls would be suited to pc, I can't really work it out in my head how they can keep the combat the same with mouse and keyboard.
  • Shakey_Jake33 #28 5 months ago

I think the popularity of services like Steam prove that developing for the PC can still ba massively profitable, in spite of the high piracy rates. Many developers and publishers are starting to realise this - piracy can impact sales, but that doesn't mean that PC gaming isn't a worthwhile venture for publishers.
  • TrevHead #29 5 months ago

@lolercopter It depends on what genre the game as those like FPS really are better on the PC.

Many games get dumbed down for iphone but no one is been called elitist there, its just stating the bleeding obvious

Hmm, odd. Look at this: http://petitionbureau.org/browse

  • Slipstream #34 5 months ago

Everybody deserves this experience, everybody. PC games would indeed lap it up, and Infrerno that video is fantastic, one the guy mentions that I disagree with though is the use of mouse other than camera for Dark Souls, because of how tight the controls are and movement limitations imposed by animations and even gear I'm not sure it would translate as well unless you add weights to the mouse for immersio perhaps, I suppose as long as people don't expect instant 180 turns from the mouse then it may not bee too much of an issue, what do I know.

and omg he is so right, I would upgrade my PC and buy another copy of DarkSouls if the modding community did some amazing things with it.
I literally keep getting called back to this game when I'm trying to play others, god knows when I'll even bother to finish Skyrim now =/
  • Stefarooh #35 5 months ago

I own the first one and love it dearly on the PS3. I havent bought the second outing yet cause I am waiting for the inevitable price drop but if this comes to the PC I would be happier than a pig in sh*t as it can then make work of my newly bought i7-2630QM with its shiny new 4gig graphic card and wolf-devouring 12GB of memory.

Now not to start a flaming war but to all those console fanboys, I love my PS3 but lately when I play games on the system I am constantly reminded how ugly the games are starting to look with lower textures. I know only buy PS3 exclusives for the system. If a game comes to PC, id rather purchase it for the PC. Games like Skyrim, Battlefield 3, Batman Arkham City look 100 X better when running them on good pc hardware and when I plug the computer playing them into my 46 inch HD TV they look simply sweeeeeeeeeeeeet and this run rings around old console hardware. That is just a simple, plain fact.

I'm not a PC gamer. Just have never been interested. And i frankly hate when PC gamers talk down to me as a console gamer for not having a super rig with maxed out specifications(not saying anyone here has done that, but its happened plenty).

THAT BEING SAID, if PC gamers want to enjoy a game that they are unable to play on console for whatever reason, i think the developer in question should atleast take into consideration porting it over so they can have the same gaming experience.

I'd say the same for Xbox 360/PS3 exclusives(not licensed by microsoft/sony mind you).

Who REALLY cares about the pirates when there are so many eager customers waiting for a game such as this. Hell i have the game on PS3 and i personaly would buy it AGAIN on PC just for the whole experience of it and potential lifespan.

Demon Souls was the reason i bought a PS3 and Dark Souls is the reason why i still havent got around to play either Saints Row 3 or Skyrim yet despite really wanting to.

If Dark Souls came out on PC (preferably in a bundle with Demon Souls) i d buy it again in a heartbeat - its the greatest game of the last years but its not flawless and many of its minor flaws could be easily fixed by mods ( armor/weapon/spell balance etc.)

if they d even couple it with a construction kit like TES games (now we are in wishfull thinkin territory unfortunately ) i think i d be done with gaming anything else for a looong time.

I admit I loved Demon's Souls more and honestly thought that Dark Souls should have stayed PS3 exclusive (and therefore get Sony-funded DEDICATED SERVERS). I don't think it should come to PC either, can't imagine controls working with mouse and keyboard.
  • Kain201 #50 5 months ago

@Chelladox Just to clarify, I don't blame you for spreading rumors, nowadays everyone on the internet is doing that.

If the original person that created this rumor, which I suspect that you are not, had took his time to look inside the other petitions he would have seen that most of these petitions don't have 15k signers. The counting for the total amount is wrong, yet the Dark Souls petition has 23.911 real signers by now.

@Po1ymorph Epic makes excellent points that TB unfortunately glazed over, together though they lay out a very clear argument as to both why and how it would work.
  • Jursa #52 5 months ago

Honestly speaking I think dark souls would do great on PC, especially if it comes to steam. The reason I think it won't be pirated to hell and back IS the online component. Dark souls wouldn't be nearly as fun without it. It basically makes most of the factions, invasions obsolete, not to mention losing the ability to play with other people.

I'm all for multiplat games, but this is just weird. If you really are interested in typical Japanese games, you would've had a console by now I reckon. You can get an xbox for 120 quid, second hand a lot cheaper. I wonder how many people signing that petition would actually buy that game. Maybe I'm just cynical (and my negs will surely reflect this), but it feels like 'Oh no teh hardcore game is released on a console, we need it on a pc so we can keep on boasting'.
  • L1nc3 #58 5 months ago

    @spekkeh
Err yes you're just being cynical.
I've gamed on pc for more than 20 years, with the Amiga and Speccy before that. I have a PS3 and had a 360 which I sold (paying to play online?? No thx). I'm a core gamer at heart and love good games and Dark was my GotY bar none as was Demon's before that. These are two of the best games this generation. Demon's deserved to be appreciated by 360 owners too ffs!
But not all ppl have the chance to own more than one system; does that make them less of a game-lover than you or I? Don't think so.
    Peace!

I dont think the controls are an issue. They ported Street Fighter 4 and god knows how many FIFAs to PC didn't they? I think PC users are clever enough to know when a joypad is best and I don't think the melee combat in DKS belongs on a mouse & keyboard, not everything is an FPS.
  • Colliers #61 5 months ago

@spekkeh It's not just about "being able to play" this game. A lot of people (like me) wanting this do have Demon's/Dark Souls on console but would still "upgrade" to a PC version. Being able to crank up the resolution, AA & AF is a big deal.

I don't understand the people claiming it wouldn't work with mouse & keyboard. Lack of imagination? Never played a 3rd person action game with mouse & keyboard? How would it ruin the balance exactly, the game's difficulty lies in making the right decisions and getting the timing and execution right. Not whether the controls get in your way.
  • spekkeh #62 5 months ago

@L1nc3 that depends on the reason for not owning more than one system. Of course I'm not going to make fun of people that don't have enough money, but that surely can't really be an argument here, especially consdering how many of those same people love to boast about their rig. I truly get if you are not interested in Japanese games that you'd stick to a pc, but that's not the reason here either... so what is?

    @Colliers
Being able to crank up the resolution, AA & AF is a big deal.
Fair enough, but, and nofi, I seriously doubt many people would buy the game again.
  • L1nc3 #63 5 months ago

    @spekkeh
You've touched a nerve though by nature you're implying that all pc gamers have loads of money to spend on their hobby and thus afford more systems to enjoy those games not available (or with poor ports) on pc. Not true. A friend built a €300 rig a few months back and it's a decent beast able to cope perfectly with Battlefield 3 on medium which is no slouch. If you know your way hardware-wise you don't need to be loaded to build a great games pc. Building your rig from scratch is part of the fun for pc gamers, not for boasting reasons but because you really feel that much 'attached' to your machine.
Some of you will know the feeling I'm talking about.
Just so you understand Spekkeh, even those that 'boast' about their specs is just outta the pride they feel for something they've built. That doesn't make them superiors or elite and some are morons indeed ;) lol because *everybody* takes pride when they accomplish something from scracth.
  • darc #64 5 months ago

@Colliers: "I don't understand the people claiming it wouldn't work with mouse & keyboard. Lack of imagination? Never played a 3rd person action game with mouse & keyboard?"

I think the better question is, have you ever played Demons/Dark Souls with a controller? There is a physicality and elegance to the control layout which is intrinsic to the gameplay itself. Force feedback is also very important in melee combat IMO. I know if I were the game designer, I'd be uneasy with idea of anyone experiencing the game with a different control scheme, as it would compromise the product. That said, a PC port with a bundled controller, or simply the reccomendation to use one for best experience, would have definite advantages, frame rate being foremost among them.

  • Colliers #69 5 months ago

@darc Yes I have. I know that the control layout is very good and makes a lot of sense. But that doesn't mean it can't be adapted. It wouldn't be as straightforward as the shoulder button/trigger system of a controller, but it could work just as well.

For example: put right hand to the left and right mouse buttons and left hand on shift & control or something; They can just keep the system to only have strafe on a lock; Item bindings could be better because a keyboard has loads of keys; The only thing that might prove a slight disadvantage is the lack of analog movement.

@cowell True but as Total Buscuit points out in his video the PC has a different distribution model than console (Steam and no used games).

Souls is the type of game that almost everybody buys on a steam sale just to see what its all about.

Many PC gamers hunger for original and unique games. Imo From should capture the market before another game studio cherry picks from its design and repackages it. Or at the very least releases some half baked clone with a ton of money put into marketting

Controller complaints? Really? THAT's what people are resorting to now?

Well gee, it's such a shame that there's no option for... er... hold on...

I played DMC4 PC-side. With a 360 gamepad. I start up Renegade Ops, and it recommends doing the same. Street Fighter 4. Arkham Asylum and City... I actually played with KBAM because I felt it worked better, but I had the option regardless.

Heck quite a few times I played King's Bounty, A PC only, mouse driven, turn based strategy game with no gamepad support, with a gamepad and a gamepad emulator. Why? Just because I could, and I felt like lying back on my bed whilst playing it.

Needless to say, whining about keyboard controls is stupid and completely besides the point, to the extent that it comes across as yet more trolling.

"pc gamers need to get off their high horses and start paying for the games they actually like. "

"Oh and i am a pc gamer myself before anyone decides to call me a consolefag."

Sooo, I don't know, either these two posts are contradictory (quite an accomplishment with one following directly after the other) or you just lumped yourself in as a pirate.

    So which is it then?

Or perhaps, just perhaps we can drop the constant "LULZ ALL PIR8S This platform aren't WORTH it" rhetoric and acknowledge that there is in fact a viable market out there?

Because if there wasn't, then to be blunt, Steam would have died a slow death by asphyxiation many years ago. Much in the vein of GFWL, only worse since Valve doesn't have the kind of money to throw around that MS does.

Ports like SSF4:AE, Renegade Ops, and Dead Rising would most certainly not have occurred, let alone been viable. And the indie market would be non-existent, as opposed to the current situation where it is arguably at its highest level ever, certainly well beyond the so-called golden age of the "bedroom coder" of the 80's.

Somewhere out there, somehow, people appear to be making money. Which would seem to imply (and this is only anecdotal you understand, I know it goes against all common sense but please bear with me) that people are actually buying these titles.

"Console gamers are forever going on about how Pc gamers look down on Consoles and think there elite/master race etc etc etc"

That's because of the endless threads about how PC gamers are superior to console gamers and that console gamers only want "dumbed down" games. However Dark Souls has proved that this is complete crap (as console gamers have always known).

  • JumpinJackFlash #93 5 months ago

Would be good to get Dark Souls on the PC, but saying that, getting a straight port from the console versions would be disappointing as there is so many aspects of the game that could be improved on the PC. The game would need to be priced reasonably too.

The difference between console gamers and PC gamers is: console gamers are spoon fed any old shit and put up with it, PC gamers on the other hand are very vocal and take action on matters.

Anyway, the PC is the best platform out there by a mile. And no, i don't give a fuck what console only gamers think...

JumpingJackFlash is a troll aswell, but dont you think its funny that youve reacted way more to anyother post here

For the record im both a 360 and a PC gamer who is currently spending more time with my 360 playing Japanese games, but I do prefer my games on PC. Does that make me elitist?

Same goes for many other posters in this thread that are from gamers who love DS and what it on PC, but unfortunatly any discussion is ruined by trolls.

It doesn't matter the control method, keyboard or joypad, each gamer can choose what is comfortable with.
Also, piracy exists on every platform more or less,so it's not something to worry about.

  • Dangerous_Dan #110 5 months ago

Being able to play this game with dedicated private servers long after Namco decided to stop the support would be great. A level editor would also be appreciated but actually that's like backstabbing the other game developers...

Imagine people spend even more hours with this game than they already do. A lot of people not buying the new 40 euro 10h games - pure horror! ;)
  • Belmonth #111 5 months ago

Man I hope next gen when more powerful consoles are out and Steam rises even more, all multiplatform developers will see its best to put their games on consoles and pc (not just pc, or not just consoles), no more exclusives.

Then maybe we will all be united and can actually talk about games and how to gives feedback to devs on how to improve them, instead of fighting each others...

I know i'm a bit late to the party, but as a PC and a console gamer is it really such a big deal to drop 100-150 notes on a console and have the best of both worlds?

I paid more than that on my pc's GPU alone.
  • bad09 #118 5 months ago

    @ZuluHero

I dunno about others but I offed the consoles completely and game on PC for practical reasons (being a family man I have little big TV time so use PC to game on the monitor and switch to big TV when I get it!) so I'm not gonna support devs on a platform when I actually want them selling to me on another. For me if you're not on PC I'm not a customer.

Most developers now try to hit as many potential buyers as possible by going across all platforms so why should people be expected to shell out on expensive proprietary hardware for a small percentage of games from devs who don't have the confidence in their product, or are scared of the phantom piracy, or have done a backroom deal with MS or Sony?

If you want games on your PC you only buy games on your PC in my opinion. Sure it stings sometimes like RDR or the Transformers sequel dropping PC, but on a platform spoilt for choice in terms of software that sting goes away in all honesty.
    Edited by bad09 at 09/01/12 @ 10:03
  • Machetazo #119 5 months ago

@ZuluHero It's not a financial thing, from my perspective. There's one console maker that's all but lost its fight, and another that's off fighting a battle I have absolutely no interest in.

In short, neither platform holder is doing much of anything that's worth financially endorsing (again, for I've already owned both and seen for myself what's on the table) and in general, neither software lineup, and particularly the attitudes that come attached, are that appealing or excite. I know that if I bought one, chances are high that they'd sit increasingly idle, playing second fiddle to the PC. There are perhaps three games I anticipate there on those consoles. Not enough at all to make buying a new one worthwhile.

  • actionfitz #120 5 months ago

as long as they dont separate out the servers... in fact i'd even re-buy the game in order to have something akin to the PS3 Demons Souls style online features.

Was annoyed at how sparse the multiplayer/co-op/pvp/messages etc all seemd to be at Dark Souls launch on the 360... due to lack of dedicated servers.
  • alcides #121 5 months ago

Arguments that PC players should just buy a console are not beside the point. What is beside the point is telling PC gamers to suck it up when it comes to consumer bullying (DLC, obligatory internet connexion...) or just buy a console.

Just buy a console is a valid remark in this case. The game was never comming your way, why not buy a console? Looks just like Xbox players badgering Microsoft for an MGS4 release. Like it so much? Buy a PS3.

Like Gears of War? B... ok, now that's one licence PC gamers were robbed of.

I think I somehow get it.

But seriously, if they shut PC gamers out, their loss. Meanwhile the game is out there to grab.
  • Dangerous_Dan #122 5 months ago

@actionfitz Hm, actually your remarks are very interesting - there are always people on forum who are disappointed about the difficulties of finding summonable players - and yet I never found that difficult at all.

I play the game on PS3 and there are lots of summon signs, most of them Japanese players - and if I get summoned it's usually an american or european host.
Seems to me the european and to an even higher extend the american gamers don't want to set down a lot of summon signs.
So basically I think there are more potential hosts than clients (phantoms) in the U.S. area.
  • randyronald #123 5 months ago

I own this game on 360 and it's definitely my pick of GOTY 2011, I would even go on to say one of the finest games I've played this console generation.

Why this article has triggered a barrage of hate towards PC gamers is beyond me. As far as I'm concerned, the more people who get to play this game the better. Although I only have a laptop that really is only well suited for retro/ small indie gaming, I think a PC version of DS would be fantastic and would pray to see what the modding communities will come up with if mod support is enabled. There are so many inaccessible corridors, sewer gratings and the like that could be opened up into some new fantastic areas!
  • Dangerous_Dan #124 5 months ago

@randyronald - Because PC gamers are elitist and arrogant... blablabla.

Actually there are not a lot of PC gamers these days especially not in the western territories - it's kind of a minority and minorities are a great scapegoat of sorts. Never wondered who are the people who scream burn the witch?

@Alcides, I bought a PS3 only for Demon's Souls and it was easily, easily worth it but, for all the other games, they would not have been enough, I would have felt disappointed. DS & DS are actually the kind of games I would expect for PC where there is usually more room for games who are not tailored to a +1 million audience. Yet DS surprised on the up side, immensely.

  • dudefella #128 5 months ago

I already own this for PS3 and 360 and would still buy the PC version if made.
  • Gecks #129 5 months ago

lots of minus votes, but pc gamers have form. remember Alien vs Predator? it launched with a limited save system - I think you could save 3 times per level. there was a massive outcry about this from reviewers and players alike, but rather than bemoan the difficulty (which was actually quite balanced, if a challenge), they were only interested in the lack of quicksave. boringly, a patch eventually came out adding that in.

it's as if a PC games difficulty can be as all-over-the-place as it wants (and they often are), as long as the crutch of quicksaving is available. because, of course, with quicksave goldeneye 64 00 agent mode would be a triviality; ninja gaiden a playfight; dark souls a walk in the park...

quicksave makes any game utterly easy, and it's a shame that it's become this sort of requirement for pc gaming. eg, when was the last hard pc action game? the only one i can think of is Painkiller (which wouldn't let you quicksave at the hardest difficulty).

of course, i'd love dark souls to be available to as wide an audience as possible, it's just a bit of a bugbear of mine, the whole quicksaving thing.

I know this thread has already gone to hell, and I'm sorry to be part of the problem, but this troll has won my attention:

"Would be good to get Dark Souls on the PC, but saying that, getting a straight port from the console versions would be disappointing as there is so many aspects of the game that could be improved on the PC. The game would need to be priced reasonably too."

So, this critcally acclaimed game has got to be better, and you've got to pay less? From Software must be so excited to do business with you...

"The difference between console gamers and PC gamers is: console gamers are spoon fed any old shit and put up with it, PC gamers on the other hand are very vocal and take action on matters."

Yeah, it never ceases to amaze me how painless my PC gaming experiences are. Everything just works right out of the box, never a compatibility issue, never the sudden need to drop n hundred dollars on an upgrade... Because as a PC gamer I would never put up with that kind of old shit.

"Anyway, the PC is the best platform out there by a mile. And no, i don't give a fuck what console only gamers think..."

Whatever, we're playing Dark Souls and you're not.
  • darc #131 5 months ago

@Colliers I hear ya, and I agree that a few things would be improved w/ QWERTY keyboard, i.e. keybinding items would be great. This *would* have a signficant impact on game balance, but one could argue that the current inventory control is one of the *bad* ways in which DS is so hard.

As for the rest, it may simply be a matter of opinion. I am a long, long time proponent of mouse and keyboard control, and still think it's the best way to play a 1st person shooter. But after years of "settling for" a gamepad in order to play console exclusives, I've come to realize they have considerable strengths of their own. Something about holding a controller, pulling a trigger instead of clicking a mouse button, feeling the force feedback in response to in-game events, makes me feel more immersed, vs. feeling like I'm at work clicking through a spreadsheet or something. So, I'm sure a sensible, effective control scheme could be implemented for PC Dark Souls, but IMO part of the experience would still be comprimised.

A good illustration that keeps coming to mind is Loco Roco on the PSP. I don't know if you ever played it, but it had a dead simple control scheme that basically boiled down to a left and a right button. But positioned as they were on the shoulder buttons of the PSP, it sort of lent an intuitive physicality to the experience that wouldn't have been quite the same otherwise. As a games enthusiast I love that sort of achievement in design: that the game was so perfectly suited to the host hardware.

Anyway, you're right that mine isn't an argument against a PC port, but if a friend asked my opinion I'd still advise they hook up a gamepad.

In other news... presently in Senn's Fortress and finally wondering if Dark Souls doesn't go a touch far with the whole "Hardest Game in the World" routine. Nothing in Demon's Souls prepared me for how casual Dark Souls is about just erasing the previous, painstaking hour of my life. Over and over again.

    My kingdom for a bonfire!
  • Gecks #133 5 months ago

@darc Senn's fortress is horror! thankfully at some point you activate a lift-type-thing shortcut that skips out a large chunk of it, however even with that i lost 40k souls rushing past the two lizard men at the start (pro-tip: never, ever rush!)
  • darc #134 5 months ago

@Gecks I've done enough grinding now (and the lightning spear helps) that most of the enemies are easy enough, but I spend an hour creeping in only to be insta-killed by a pendulum or a rock or whatever. I've been in pretty far (and back out again) 20x easily and it's just gotten infuriating. Demon's Souls never discouraged me this badly. I hate to say a game is too hard, but DaS just has some weird spikes and weird structural choices, e.g. two bonfires will be spitting distance from one another, and then the one you really need is nowhere in sight. Demon's Souls was so elegant in its symmetry by comparison.

Anyway, I think I've found the elevator, but I guess I didn't use it properly? I rode it up to my spiky demise and then down on the next visit, but never opened up a shortcut. Still wandering around looking for the next bonfire, finding new ways to die instead.
  • Gecks #135 5 months ago

@darc in the section with the first (or maybe second?) set of swinging axes, one of the iron maiden-type cages is open and can be gotten in to, and that takes you near the roof. i think you have to get past a certain section, or unlock something to activate it (perhaps when you free that guy from a cage?), but that's all i remember i'm afraid :(

i found the boss for that area quite tricky, so look forward to that! :)
  • darc #136 5 months ago

@Gecks "one of the iron maiden-type cages is open"

Good god, that's one of those things that you might literally *never* notice. Do you have to be positioned just so in order for a prompt to appear? I can't stay mad at Dark Souls for long (it's my second favorite game ever, and you can probably guess my first) but I do take issue with some of these design choices that all but necessitate referring to a Wiki or other outside help. I'd never tolerate it if the gameplay weren't so fantastic otherwise.
  • Gecks #137 5 months ago

@darc thinking back, i'm fairly sure you first get the cage from the roof, where it's fairly obvious what you're supposed to do, and then it takes you back to the start so you know which one is open. i don't think you can use it to go up until you've first used it from the roof, sorry :(

however it sounds like you're pretty close to the roof anyway - once you've got to that rock-firing mechanism i think it's not far to go! keep at it :)

  • TrevHead #139 5 months ago

@darc There is a bonfire in sens fortress but its semi hidden. Once you get to the roof turn left and where the 2nd spot that is fire bombed you can drop down to a bonfire. Head right before facing the firebombs as there is a fire res ring.

*OTHER TIPS DONT READ IF YOU DONT WANT SEMI SPOILERS
BTW dont bother fighting those tritanite demons in the basement until you find a certain ring that allows you to walk on water. It took me ages fighting those monsters without the ring.

Also I recomemnd you continue on and get the lordstar in anar londo as it gives you fast travel between bonfires. I left it to last and would have saved lots of time if got it first.
Londo is hard though, so make sure youve half decent skills and ecuiptment (like wolf ring and a stone helmet for poise), Hehe youll love trying to get past those 2 dark knight archers, there is a trick to it but its still hit and miss:)

@TrevHead Thanks, TrevHead. Already have the rusted ring and those titanite demons are still giving me a hard time. (1 down 2 to go.) Have yet to find my way to the roof. Got as high as (iirc) a 4th set of pendulums across a VERY narrow bridge, lightning from the left... not sure if that's even the right way. It looked like a dead end, but who knows? Insta-killed there and had to take a break with something much lighter. (Uncharted, the antidote to Dark Souls LOL.)

The Lord Vessel... have been waiting for this damn thing through the whole game. I'm already 100 hours in! Do you get the option to fast travel 10 hours before the game ends?? :o Or is the idea that it persists with you through your New Game+?
  • Gecks #148 5 months ago

@darc i found those titanite demons an utter nightmare! i ended up just buying a load of arrows and cheesing one of them from above.

as for the lordvessel, i suppose it depends on the order you do things as i got it after about 30-40 hours. i'd say you have about half the game to go but you may blitz through the latter half of the game as you must already be way higher level than me already!
  • darc #149 5 months ago

@Gecks Yeah, I think I'm somewhere around level 70. There were points where everything in every direction just seemed impossible and I had no idea what to do but grind shamelessly (primarily to boost endurance so I could wear decent armour.) You must be much better at this game than I am! :)

Hard to imagine breezing through anything in Dark Souls, but now that you mention it, the final ~20% of Demon's Souls was surprisingly easy, probably for the same reason.
  • darc #150 5 months ago

@Gecks (regarding difficulty vs hours in) ... I wonder if it could also be a question of what class is played. My wife is playing Demon's Souls now, and she's playing some kind of caster whereas I'd been pure melee (and the occasional miracle) and it's like watching an entirely different game! I can't believe how much easier DeS is with spells!

I played as a pyro and yeah magic really does help, So does playing with the drake / dragon? sword. (so does running past the ghosts in new londo and grabbing the curse ring early into the game)

Ild say spending your exp points wisely makes a difference, especially for pvp / co-op as you can only play with others who are within 10% of your characters level.

One thing that made the game harder for me was the fact Havel fell off the ledge so I couldnt pick up his ring. Its worth keeping this in mind while fighting important characters near ledges.
  • Gecks #152 4 months ago

@darc the game got a lot easier for me once i started levelling my gear! once i hit about level 50-60 i basically stopped levelling up and spent everything on upgrading my kit and my pyro hand. i started as a thief with STR/DEX as i needed it, but started using the pyro hand and katanas about mid-way through and that definitely seemed to suit me better!

i'm interested to see how it plays with miracles and magic as i never touched either!

@Gecks I finally made it through Senn's! (Was actually level 65, not 70.) Once you get to Anor Londo the game absolutely *explodes* - I can't keep track of the place! I like to be pretty exhaustive in my exploration but this is SO non-linear. Didn't expect so much new content all at once. And before I could wrap my head around Anor, I wound up in the painted world, more or less accidentally, and don't know how to get back!

Totally agree about leveling loot, noticed several levels back that this can be more important than leveling stats. Unfortunately I'm often shy on components, and because I have a relatively low strength, I have fewer options weapon-wise. Next level I will hit 24str, and we'll see what happens then. I do have the Iaito (no other katanas) but never found it all that useful despite a decent dex (22). VERY early on - having the master key - I made a suicide run for Astora's sword and with its magic damage it kind of spoiled me for all other weapons until the lightning spear. It just kind of happened that way; I had no idea what the loot would be when I made the run, but it has a massive impact on the game IMO.

I still see endurance as the single most important stat (felt this way even when playing Demon's Souls.) Between equip burden and stamina I can never get enough of it. Speaking of which, I just found Havel's armor, whose stats are off the charts, but I'm a little underwhelmed by its actual performance - I take more damage than I would expect given these huge defense ratings. Thoughts?

@darc anor londo is amazing. that first cinematic, and then you're just dumped in the middle and you can basically go everywhere that you can see! i thought i must have been nearing the end of the game by then but it opens up so much.

i used katanas because everyone else seemed to be using them, and once you've flung some upgrades at them they are pretty powerful, and fast! the damage ratings of things are a bit deceptive because i can do ~3 swings of my uchinaga in the same time as it takes for 1 from the black knight sword (which i used for most of the first half). but it does mean you have to upgrade DEX rather than STR.

armour/endurance is a bit of a balancing act i guess. i didn't upgrade my END much but then that limited me to using certain high defence, low weight items (i always kept my load under 50%). the crimson skirt seemed especially good. swapping in bits of Havel's set is good sometimes, when you have the endurance to spare (i think i used the helmet towards the end). i had a good ring that i couldn't take off as it would break, and another ring that increased DEF. according to the stats screen, my overall DEF was higher with these 2 rings compared to swapping the latter for havel's ring, and putting on better armour (such as his!).

@Gecks Yes, the Crimson Skirt is amazing - aside from its excellent Curse etc resistances, it has a really high physical defense once upgraded. I've worn it through most of the game. I was really surprised that it wasn't one of the items FromSoft decided to nerf in their recent update. It seems really overpowered compared to more "traditional" armor types, or even the rest of the Crimson set. Real men wear skirts, I guess. :)

As for the Uchigatana, I've yet to actually find it, which has a lot to do with my not using one. :) I had intended to make this thief a high DEX build, but the fact is I never found a weapon that really gave me the incentive to do so.

Anor Londo, wow. It's like I just got a whole new game. My wife is thrilled LOL.
