Super Meat Boy sells over 1 million

"PLATINUM BABY."

Rock hard downloadable game Super Meat Boy has sold over one million copies, developer Team Meat has revealed.

"Fun Fact: Super Meat Boy past [sic] the million sales mark last month!" the indie developer wrote on Twitter. "PLATINUM BABY."

Super Meat Boy, designed by Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes, launched on Xbox Live Arcade in October 2010 as part of Microsoft's GameFeast XBLA promotion. It later launched on PC and Mac.

The two-man studio is now hard at work on its "ambitious", "fun", "more experimental" new project.

Did this not release on PC before Xbox Live? Or am I confused.

Either way it's chuffing brilliant :D Golden God award is one of my proudest gaming moments.

Fantastic game, glad it has done so well.

I have a love/hate relationship with this game. It's totally awesome though.
  • Cadence #7 5 months ago

I think I gave up on world 5. I'm just too old and shit to complete it I think.

Do these sales include Humble Bundle 4 sales I wonder? Over 400,000 sales for that. Not saying they should or shouldn't include these sales but it would be nice to know at least.

Not all that surprising after it became one of the Steam Sale regulars. No complaints though, although it makes most other platform games feel terribly slow and unresponsive after playing it.

I bought it on day 1 on the xbox. Never completed it though... I'm to crap really. It is an awesome game!

Great game, but I never came close to completing it. I think I did dark and light variations of the first 3 world and then stopped playing for some reason. Like to go back to it eventually, but if I'm being honest it probably won't happen.

Still, as has been said, not a bad word to say about the game.

Perhaps this has something to do with the latest Humble Bundle including Super Meat Boy AND it being in the Steam winter sale?

Was just playing this last night, I am one of the million I am proud to say. Nice to see something original and low budget get the sales it deserves.

One of my favourite games. I completed it 100%, didn't play anything else in the meantime. Totally compelling for me. I have 3 versions - Humble Bundle, Ultra Rare Edition and Xbox 360. I wonder how many others are the same?

Had my eye on this for a while but yet to pick it up, may have to be my next purchase.

Congrats to Team Meat for the sales, good to see the indie market making waves.

Bought it on offer about a month ago, it's ridiculously addictive, I was stuck on Rapture last time I played it, don't think I'll be able to complete it. One of the better Arcade games.
  • kupocake #17 5 months ago

Deserves to have sold double that.
  • andytheadequate #18 5 months ago

Great game but I had to give up on World 5 because I had a similar experience to Cadence, I was a bit rubbish at it
  • Stratix #19 5 months ago

No game has pissed me off quite so much. Still love it.
  • BartsBlue #20 5 months ago

@Cadence Same here. I never was too good with platforming games, but combined with aging reflexes I don't think I stand a chance against Meat Boy.

Awesome game though. Would love it on PS3.
  • DrStrangelove #21 5 months ago

Quite deservedly so. After this and The Binding of Isaac, I can't wait for the next McMillen game.

Bought it day one on XBLA and loved it! Glad it's done so well.

I recieved the Ultra Rare Edition for PC as a Christmas present so I have two versions of the game to struggle to complete fully hehe :D it's so hard yet that's what is awesome about it :p

And the little super meat boy avatar award for completing the game has been running around me ever since I got it :D

@Lexx87 - It was out for XBLA first, followed by Steam, there was a flash version that was available via news-grounds before both of those however :)

glad to hear it. bloody fantastic game and love the sf2 pastiche at the beginning

The game is so hilariously hard that I can but wonder who are those other 999,999 masochists playing this game. That Steam achievement required for a piece of coal was most likely the most impossible thing ever; after a few hours I gave up.

In many ways Super Meat Boy and Hammerfight remind me from the games of my childhood when frustration was the foremost sensation left after a gaming session. Frustration and willingness to show that dastardly level/opponent the next day.

I am not sure, but it seems to me that indie titles have been recently more and more pleasing to the "hard core" gamers whilst wearing at the same time the casual clothes. Some of the more recent indie blockbusters have been fiendishly hard to a point that it really must hamper the sales.

Maybe 2012 could bring some well-scaling indie games so that sad losers like me could complete them whilst those more nimble and intelligent could still have their challenge...

Indeed MisterTony, I'm having more hardcore games in my indy collection than in my biggames collection, buying more of the indykind too. Feels like the 8bit days again but with extra polish and lovely graphics! Happy times are back :)
