Enslaved lead designer Mark Richard Davies is working on new Naughty Dog PlayStation 3 exclusive The Last of Us, it has been revealed.

"Okay, so I never worked on Uncharted 3 - I was really doing this," the Naughty Dog game designer Tweeted, linking to the recently-announced game's eye-catching debut trailer. "Finally I can stop lying!"

The Last of Us is Naughty Dog's fourth franchise, joining Uncharted, Jak & Daxter and Crash Bandicoot.

Naughty Dog has been working on The Last of Us "for some time", the acclaimed developer said over the weekend. Creative director Neil Druckmann has been working on it as part of a secret second team for two years.

Sony describes The Last of Us as a "new franchise created exclusively for PlayStation 3".

"We are excited to finally unveil The Last of Us, a project the team has been working hard on for some time," Evan Wells, co president of Naughty Dog, said.

"Naughty Dog's mission is to change the way people experience video games. We are confident The Last of Us will take a leap forward in cinematic gaming and storytelling, providing gamers with an experience unlike anything else in the industry."

The Last of Us is a blend of survival and action, and tells a "character driven story" about a population decimated by a modern plague. Abandoned cities are being reclaimed by nature and the remaining survivors are killing each other for food and weapons.

Joel is described as a ruthless survivor. Ellie is a "brave young teenage girl who is wise beyond her years". The pair must work together to survive their journey across what remains of the United States.

Druckmann revealed Ellie is played by Ashley Johnson, best known for her two-season role as Chrissy Seaver in the TV show Growing Pains.

Joel is played by Troy Baker, whose credits include Snow in Final Fantasy 13 and Final Fantasy 13-2, Vincent in Catherine, Two-Face in Batman: Arkham City and Booker DeWitt in BioShock Infinite.

Sony's The Last of Us website reveals the game carries a PEGI 18 rating - Naughty Dog's first. It also mentions "no network play".

Bruce Straley, a Naughty Dog veteran who has played a key role in the 13 million-selling Uncharted series, is game director.

Sony is yet to announce a release date for The Last of Us.
