UK Top 40: Modern Warfare 3 sales increase

Mario Kart 7 skids into 8th.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 continues to dominate the UK video games chart, its sales rising 2 per cent to secure a fourth week on top.

3DS game Mario Kart 7 was this week's sole newcomer, and finished eighth. That's higher than fellow 3DS exclusive Super Mario 3D Land managed three weeks ago, but it is much quieter now.

FIFA 12 sales improved to take the football game to second place. However, EA's game was still 55,000 sales short of rampant chart leader Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

Assassin's Creed: Revelations was third, behind an ever-rising Just Dance 3 in fourth. Skyrim shuffled down to fifth, but Saints Row: The Third fell further, to sixth.

Nintendo puzzler Professor Layton and the Spectre's Call was seventh, ahead of Mario Kart 7 in eighth, Battlefield 3 in ninth and Super Mario 3D Land in 10th.

Outside the top 10, Mario & Sonic London 2012 Olympic Games rose to 11th - its third rise in three weeks.

Abba: You Can Dance and Zumba Fitness 2 both managed to enter the top 40 in this, their second week of release. They finished 30th and 34th, respectively.

Meanwhile, both Rayman: Origins and Lord of the Rings: War in North dropped out of the top 40, after disappointing starts for both last week.

What about Rayman: is it in the top 40 this week?

I'm seeing some correlation between Call of Duty's sales and The X-Factor's viewing figures...

Its a shame about Zelda not selling so well as its one of the best games this generation.

I had to change to portable view because an add was stopping me from commenting

Never thought I would see the day when a Pokemon game didn't chart.

guess the reason of Kinect Sports 1>2 is because KS1 have football but KS2 just have handegg

I bought Mario Kart 7 and damn it's goooood!! between this and Super Mario 3D land i can't put my 3DS down. My PS3 hates me so much right now.

Rage has climbed 8 places from 32 to 24. I assume the 360 demo has had the desired affect.
  • simplerotation #8 6 months ago

@Obli That, and it's been really heavily discounted this week.

Abba you can dance, Dance Central and zumba fitness have all re-entered, I guess due to people buying xmas gifts.

I finally picked up a copy of MW3 this weekend and I have to wonder why I bothered. I knew the campaign was going to be short, but 4 hours takes the piss. That is the shortest one yet and wasn't even as good as the previous two.

I gave BF3 a hard time for its single player campaign, but it was still better than this, which is surprising.

@roz123 - The Zelda sales situation is outright odd. The game's done ok in Japan, fairly well in the US, but seems to have crashed and burned in Europe - particularly in the UK (which always feels like a tough market for Nintendo). Even with the Japanese and US figures, the sales are probably still disappointing for Nintendo, despite their talk of "fastest Zelda sales ever".

It emphasises how difficult it's becoming for them to turn the huge Wii installed base into game sales (which is where the profits are). Zelda's actually been significantly out-sold by Dark Souls, which is in the same rough genre - but with far less brand name-recognition - on the other consoles.

That said, Zelda's been one of the most heavily exploited Nintendo franchises over the last few years. There's a good chance that a lot of people are just a bit fatigued with it.
  • roz123 #11 6 months ago

@Rougeywon: Maybe it is fatigue, maybe its because the wii is such a multiplayer focused console, maybe its because the "hardcore" gamers know how easy it is to hack the Wii these days. Plenty of reasons. It could sell more over christmas and word of mouth could keep it selling for a while.

According to the little bit of text chart track provide with the charts Super Mario 3D Land sold 12% less in its second week but 20% more this week. So it (and Mario Kart 7) sold more this week then it did in its first week.

Its depressing to see the sort of game cod has become. Dont get me wrong i think its great that a game can become as big as it has but the modern warefare franchise has completely lost its way since cod 4.

Personally mw3 is gonna be sold as was mw2 before it,

Skyward Sword is the first console Zelda I've ever decided to pass on since I started console gaming with the N64, that's where one of their sales went.

Buying Motion Plus for just one game, plus the heavy emphasis on motion control put me off, plus what I've heard about the game itself doesn't make me feel like I'm missing out with reports of excessive handholding, few dungeons and a barren world that's mostly filler.
  • roz123 #14 6 months ago

@Cappy, you heard wrong. Its harder then the other 3D zeldas (although I haven't played Majoras Mask) and the underworld is like one massive dungeon. Once you get to the third dungeon it really becomes an excellent and fresh experience.

    @Cappy
Your missing out then. The motion controls are seriously involving. And the enemies are so much harder than previous games. It's quite combat focused really.
  • Rogueywon #16 6 months ago

#15, #16 - I'm about a dozen hours into it now. Can't say I'm finding it particularly hard, but then, having just beaten Dark Souls (and a New Game+), that's probably not surprising. The motion controls are ok in places (they work pretty well for the flying), but they're not as well-tuned as I would like. The "acceptance zone" for vertical and horizontal sword-swings feels very small - so the game tends to throw in lots of diagonal swipes where I didn't want them. Given how many types of enemies need to be hit with a particular swipe at a particular time, that really does get annoying.

I think what's put a lot of people off is the really, really excessive tutorialling that mars the first 3-4 hours or so of play. It does feel like you're playing for little 2 minute windows before Fi pops up with another lengthy, unskippable (or sometimes partially-skippable) tutorial (some of which covers obvious stuff). A Dark Souls-style "get on and figure it out" system, maybe with the odd text marker to explain controls where necessary, would have worked much better. Once you get past the endless-tutorials stage, things do improve.

y the fuck do people still buy shitty cod, baffles me.
  • kinky_mong #18 6 months ago

Rayman dropping straight out of the charts means it should be going nice and cheap by Christmas. A shame for the developers but my wallet can't help but cheer at that.
  • BigDannyH #19 6 months ago

Ha, I came on here to bemoan the poor sales of Zelda (lower than Mario Kart Wii!) and I'm glad to see I'm not alone.

Only got it Sunday but was glued to it for 6 hours+. It's fantastic.

I actually like CoD too but this is a welcome change of pace.
  • aphex187 #20 6 months ago

    @lollage

Where's the PC figures from BF3 i wonder?

As for MW3, well i haven't played it in over a week, horrid MP game IMO and the last CoD i will buy! Let's hope others follow that trend.
  • MrVengeance #21 6 months ago

Releaseing Rayman at this time of year was a ridiculous decision - it would have done so much better at a quieter time of year. As good as it is no doubt, only Triple-A games do well at Christmas. It should have been released in March or in the summer where it would have shone. People have only so much money!

    Will publishers ever learn??
  • JayKwon #22 6 months ago

And why is Rayman not a triple A-title? Because of a smaller marketing budget?
  • DjFlex52 #23 6 months ago

Surprisingly, in the top 40, there are six 360 exclusives and only one PS3 exclusive.
  • ClaretMatt #24 6 months ago

I don't think I want to live in a country where Just Dance 3 sells more than Skyrim...
