Looks a bit like the ps3 x media bar. Hope it is as the ps3 is so much cleaner to use. Only got a 360 recently as it was free with orange broadband. I like it but was expecting the dash to be nicer after all the plaudits it seems to get. Hopefully it won't be so add filled.
  • QPRHOOPS81 #3 6 months ago

That wasn't a troll this looks like a big improvement to me.
  • chrisno21 #4 6 months ago

Looks like a whole lot of adverts for me.
  • Beano #5 6 months ago

All I see is a lot of ads... geez!
  • vyseofhr #6 6 months ago

The new Xbox dash is just one big advert for things you didn't buy your Xbox for.
  • beelzebozo #7 6 months ago

    Needs more Sky ads.
  • Darren #8 6 months ago

The new dashboard is not that great IMO as I've been using the beta.

There seems to be more adverts than ever despite everything appearing to be squeezed into a smaller space and the interface now looks a little cluttered plus finding stuff is harder. I dare say I'll get used to it but it seems a completely unnecessary update IMO, obviously done for those 10 people who still own Kinect and to increase the advertising opportunities and no other reason.
  • t8yman #9 6 months ago

unless I'm seriously missing something, (and ive been in the beta) the youtube stuff doesnt exist in the UK so far.

I dont mind the new dash, its a bit quicker, and seems more "modern", and I havent even noticed any ads so far TBH.
  • JonnyFaeGTown #10 6 months ago

I'm in the beta and i'm liking it, disappointed that YouTube and the other TV content aren't in the beta.
  • DisneyJon #11 6 months ago

It makes it harder to find stuff on marketplace, I never could find indie games during beta! Hate it top be honest, and I never use kinect with it!
  • RageRiot #12 6 months ago

    Still no browser :/
  • Dr_Wookiee #13 6 months ago

    When is it actually out?
  • BM #14 6 months ago

@Dr_Wookiee Tomorrow in the UK apparently
  • homerramone #15 6 months ago

Good grief - look at all that whitey goodness.
    Wonderful. I cant wait.
  • Arwin #16 6 months ago

It looks like they've integrated the Kinect and non-Kinect now, and used Metro (Windows 8, Windows Phone 7) to do it. And yeah, it looks a *lot* like XMB now.

Unplug network cable -> no ads -> problem solved.
  • geoneo123 #19 6 months ago

For a paid service I believe we should be able to opt out of ad's!

Its a bloody joke! and why the hell cant I use my live headset to 'Talk' to my xbox?!
  • iamtheoneneo #20 6 months ago

so from the looks of it still a hundred blades , a hundred adds per blade and then only 1 button that actually does the thing you want it to. awesome design MS - keep on milking it!
  • DiamondIce #21 6 months ago

The screenshots look a lot sleeker and clean than what I am seeing on my dashboard.

The grey background looks far darker on my TV even when I adjust the picture (unless I put the brightness to a stupidly high level). Everything else looks okay and the TV picture doesn't seem too dark in any other way.

  • TheVoice #22 6 months ago

@DiamondIce Yeah it doesn't look as sharp as that on mine either, that's at 1080p on a 40" Bravia.

The background is definitely more black/grey than the white on these screenshots too, so I presume it's a different build to the current beta preview.
  • britscott #23 6 months ago

@Biker_Bob_1971 When navigating to the friends tab, yes 3 friends are visible, however you DON'T have to press the xbox guide button to see the rest of your friends list. Just press A on the freinds tile and All your friends are available. I personally find navigation much quicker now its all on a left to right plane. No more accidentally pressing left/right when i actually wanted to scroll up!

Been using this for a while now and I like it to be honest. Each to their own, but I don't really think of those things as adverts (I know they are really). It's not like they're for something completely unrelated like Shampoo. They usually alert me to a new game demo to try, which I find useful.

Even though I still use the controller to navigate (the bumper buttons to quickly shift between pages is a must) the Kinect search is awesome for finding games in the marketplace. Much better than the manual searches of the last two dashboards.
  • mcreddie #25 6 months ago

    NOOOOOOO NOT BIING NOOOOOOOOO
  • Eldritch #26 6 months ago

@TheVoice "1080p on 40"" and "sharp" is a bit of a contradiction in itself, isn't it?
  • Badassbab #27 6 months ago

Google > Bing. Obviously MS will want to promote their stuff but still, wish I had the option. Hopefully Bing will keep on improving.

Other than that looking forward to this especially the Lovefilm app. Looks like it has been designed with Kinect in mind.
  • septimus #28 6 months ago

Quite like it. Bar the ads. At least you can turn those off on PS3. Gold Subs should be allowed to otherwise it is a piss take.
  • codename8ball #29 6 months ago

I agree with the positive comments - I think they've taken the best bits of the XMB and kept the good bits from the previous interface. I have kinect (don't use it that often for games these days) but where you can use it to navigate it works well, voice recognition is good. It's a bit disappointing that you have to switch to control pad / remote to navigate a DVD though, and the WMC is also still pad only. Overall, I think it's an improvement but there's still some holes in it in terms of functionality.
  • Markusdragon #30 6 months ago

People keep saying it looks like the XMB, but I don't really see the resemblance...

Am I going to have to wear sun glasses whilst using the new dash? Can we use custom wallpapaers that fill...gasp! The WHOLE screen?
  • 32768Colours #33 6 months ago

Looks cleaner than previously, and I'll no doubt get used to it.

The first thing I noticed though was that the icons to access the content you actually own were a quarter of the size of an advertisment placed dead centre under each section.

Take the TV section for example: I have not - and never will have - Sky, but presumably that massive SKY icon will perpetually dominate that section, whilst I'll need to go into a sub-folder to access iPlayer just because it isn't revenue generating.

At least we know where Microsoft's UI priorities lie. It certainly isn't to improve our "experience" that's for sure.
  • yarkiebrown #34 6 months ago

looks okay, looking forward to trying it….

though, if you have unlocked wallpapers or even bought ones, do they just replace the background grey as usual, can imagine it looks a bit of a mess, then again it does now so no great change there

As someone who is a part of the preview program, I don't like the new Dash. It's crap to navigate with a pad, nothing is where you think it is, and there's far too many adverts which take precedence over the console's functionality. That Apps tab image is a mock up, no one in the UK has had anything new to try (beyond SKY) while American previewers have had the likes of the Netflix, UFC and Daily Motion apps to tinker with.
  • TheVoice #37 6 months ago

@Eldritch Not really, I appreciate that it's quite 'low' for a display of that size (compared to PC displays for example), but the PS3 XMB manages to look very sharp and clean at the same resolution, so I don't know why MS seem to consistently fail in that respect.

Still, the beta dashboard is an improvement nonetheless, the current dashboard makes text look like a blurry mess.
  • telboy007 #38 6 months ago

@geoneo123 Because Kinect contains all the voice recognition bits and bobs.

    Anyway...

I like being able to tell the xbox what to do so I can lay there motionless, impressed the folks the other day by telling it to go to the videos on my server, shame that it can't play videos by voice and that is controller/new remote based.

On a side note, the new media remote is very nice indeed.
  • braydee89 #39 6 months ago

@geoneo123 I both agree and disagree. I believe the ads are subsidisation. By the same logic, Sky and Virgin TV channels shouldn't have commercials because we already pay subscriptions to these services. Pay per view on box office is another example of a service which charges subscription and makes use of advertisments.
  • theonlyix #40 6 months ago

can anyone with the beta please confirm that media extender abilities are functional with kinect only?
  • hosedoctor69 #41 6 months ago

Those are not ads, that's the Sky Player etc. Looks better than the 'Fisher Price' look of the current dash. 360 is my console of choice but I like Sony's XMB more.
  • Moz #42 6 months ago

@geoneo123 to be fair that's like saying why are there ads on Sky when you pay for it monthly, we live in a commercial capitalist society get over it.

As for the interface, I'm a big fan of metro but why is it using so little of the screen is far better in Windows 8
  • SpaceMidget75 Verified Senior Software Developer, Minerva Computer Services #43 6 months ago

@theonlyix There's no Kinect support for Media Center or DVD control, which is a shame. :(
  • cloudskipa #44 6 months ago

Why is it time and time again people confuse "adverts" for actual dashboard content?

I think the Metro dash looks really nice, it just shows how far the machine has come since launch. YouTube integration is gonna be pretty cool. Looking forward to tomorrow :)
  • theonlyix #45 6 months ago

@SpaceMidget75 thanks. Damnit, the only thing I was looking forward to with the new dash :-(
  • Xardan #46 6 months ago

Youtube, Bing, BBC and 4oD etc is what i look forward to. How i navigate to reach that content isnt all that important.
  • Smudge1983 #47 6 months ago

Looks alright, does need allowance for owner preference though. I wont use half of it.
  • JamieR #48 6 months ago

    Looks like Windows 8 then.
  • X #49 6 months ago

Shiny shiny good dash behind me shiny shiny na na na na!
  • DwarfyP #50 6 months ago

@RageRiot You have a PC, you have a phone. Browse the Internet on those.

Wish people would stop bitching about lack of a browser. How many people honestly browse the internet on their PS3? It's a terrible process and painful to do. I just keep my laptop and/or iPad next to me and browse there.

@QPRHOOPS81 The XMB is a horrible experience to navigate compared to the Dashboard.

I have a Windows Phone 7 so I'm used to the Metro layout.

@geoneo123 The reason they advertise is to show you what game content is out/due. If they didn't do it then everyone would complain that they weren't aware of PDLC or whats coming out on the console.
  • cheeky-sod #51 6 months ago

Awesome. Been using the Beta for a month.. love it.
  • UkHardcore23 #52 6 months ago

The Dashboard has been officially delayed.

    Boooooooooooooooooooooooooo

    Dont know how long for!
  • Elfworks #53 6 months ago

Has anyone actually had the update yet? Cause I've turned on my Xbox today and, nothing.
  • seiryoden #54 6 months ago

Thanks Microsoft for confirming what I already suspected: spending those leftover MS points on wallpapers and themes really was pissing my money up the wall.
