Design a track for Slightly Mad's new game

Eurogamer teams with London studio to find the next Hermann Tilke.

2

Hermann Tilke's probably a lovely chap, but it's hard not to want to throttle the man who's throttled so much of the life out of race circuits around the world. Here's your chance to prove both him and the world what you're capable of.

Slightly Mad Studios has teamed up with Eurogamer to give you a chance to sit down with the team in its London studio and design your own track for its forthcoming racer Project Cars.

The winner will be decided through a Hot Lap competition, taking place behind the wheel of a Caterham R500 Superlight around the Conneticut Hill track, with the event going live at 3pm today. It'll be up and running for two weeks, with the leaderboard closing on December 16.

To take part, you'll first have to register on Project Cars' forums, sign up as a junior member and download the latest build of the game (and it should be noted that junior membership costs 10 EUR). From there, the Eurogamer Hot Lap competition can be found through the Events button in the game.

Project Cars is Slightly Mad's crowd-developed racing game, which builds upon the expertise the developer accrued in making GTR 2 and the Need for Speed Shift games - you can read more about it in our recent preview.

  • The competition runs from December 2 until December 16.
  • No employees of Eurogamer or Slightly Mad can enter. Hermann Tilke can enter if he really must, though that would seem a bit unfair on everyone else.
  • Slightly Mad will be able to cover travel or accommodation costs for the studio visit for UK entrants.
  • We will determine the date of the visit with the winner once the competition is closed.

Please let me know so I can murder them before their vile infection infects the racetracks of the world like Tilke's monotonous boring procession roads where the idea of "good track design" is hairpin, hairpin, hairpin, maybe a straight, hairpin and sod all good over taking opportunities.

What he did to Hockenheim was practically a war crime.

    Yay, great prize...

You have to pay 25 Euros to sign up to a CARS team, in order to be able to enter the competition, and then you have to pay for your own travel and accommodation costs, should you win?

    Nice!

Maybe this should have just been one of those 'drawing' competitions like the Earth Defense one and the one where you had to design the car exterior for Motorstorm, or whatever it was. For the enthusiasts, they could have written little notes on Camber and Elevation on their drawings.

Paying to enter, and then paying to go to collect your prize, seems a smidgen restrictive.

Unless you get a percentage cut of the royalties when the game goes live, and your track is in use?

@agparrot While I agree it seems odd that his has been proposed (it smells a bit like marketing) you couldn't really convey a proper track by drawing it. Unless of course you're a decent technical designer.

I mean most of us in terms of track elevation, choke points, apex angles, etc. would draw something that would look like a 10 year old's best school piece with a grin of one too only to be told it's utter shit.

So yeah it's great to actually go in and design it with the team but the competition isn't overly accessible.

Really though, having only just picked up on this project few weeks back it's hard to knock the devs because their approach to making this game so far seems like a breath of fresh air.

Edit: I've just signed up to the forum, so I've come full circle, not sure if I'm weeping tears of sadness or joy. Well done you basticles.

I've made an amendment - the cost of travel and accommodation WILL be covered, contrary to what was previously stated. Apologies for the confusion.

@porkface You've made two, the one you just said and that Team Membership now only costs 10 euros, that would be for a Junior Membership and not Team Membership which is still 25 euros...

*takes off his OCD/slightly being a dick hat*

Edit: Forgot to say thanks to whoever got the travel/accomm issue sorted out so quickly!

Nice, am at 1.23.400 now. The best one is down around 1.18.000...

The next Herman Tilke? Why do they want someone who will make a really boring circuit where overtaking is impossible.

Shift 2 was horrible, laggy controls and felt sloppy compared to the excellent first one.
I platted the first one but the second one i barely touched (35% into the game my stats say).
