GameStop sells 600,000 Call of Duty Elite memberships

One of GameStop's top 10 launches of the year so far.

US shop giant GameStop has sold over half a million Call of Duty Elite memberships, it has revealed.

Modern Warfare 3 is the biggest entertainment launch of all time, and is approaching a billion dollars in sales - but publisher Activision is yet to comment on the performance of Elite, its stat tracking and social service.

But it looks like it's off to a flyer - GameStop, the biggest specialist video game shop in the US, sold 600,000 "instances", as it calls it, of Elite. This makes Elite one of GameStop's top 10 launches of the year so far.

Elite is free, but you can pay an annual fee for a premium version. You can buy a subscription through your console, but also in shops, such as GameStop.

"We've found that consumer demand for downloadable content is very strong at the point of launch," GameStop president Tony Bartel said in a conference call reported by Gamasutra.

"...Based on our research we know that one half of the DLC we sell is to customers that have never purchased DLC before."
