Capcom confirms Darkstalkers for PlayStation Network

UPDATE: European launch "will happen".

UPDATE: Capcom has told Eurogamer that Darkstalkers will launch on the European PlayStation Store, but was unable to provide us with a release date.

"We're working on the EU release with Sony Computer Entertainment Europe [SCEE] at the moment," a spokesperson said. "It will happen but we can't confirm when just yet. As soon as we know, we'll inform everyone."

ORIGINAL STORY: Capcom has confirmed that Darkstalkers is coming to the PlayStation Network.

The PlayStation version of the arcade original Darkstalkers: The Night Warriors launches on 29th November in the US. Hopefully it will launch in Europe a day later, on Wednesday 30th November. We're checking with Capcom now.

The 1994 classic is considered by many to be one of the greatest fighting games ever made, and introduced many of the mechanics seen in modern day 2D fighters.

Capcom's fighting game producer Yoshinori Ono is often asked about the possibility of making a new Darkstalkers game.

In March Ono told Eurogamer Capcom had received over 100,000 requests from fans for a new Darkstalkers game - up from the 5000 it had in August 2010. Capcom wants one million requests before it reignites the franchise.

"One day, if it goes half a million, Capcom may raise its eyebrow a little bit and I could do what I did in London in 2007 when I announced the comeback of Street Fighter," Ono said.

"In the near future, with your help, it may become true. It's on its way, because we're pretty much where we were with Street Fighter a few years back. So keep it up."

Hooray. Shame its the original game, and not one of the later, better iterations. Shame that EU will also likely get the horrible 50hz squashed version and not experience it in its true arcade speedy glory. Shame also that Eu will likely *not* get it a day later and will probably have to wait about three years to see it.

Still, its a wonderful, wonderful game, and one of my favourite 2D fighters ever just for character roster alone, not to mention its slick mechanics.

Falicia is one of the hotest characters ever. Own thhis on Sega Saturn Jap import. Capcom should have given Dark Stalkers the 3D treatment.

No word on a XBL version or is it PSN because it is a PS1/2 game? I have to admit I never played Darkstalkers so I have no idea on which platforms it was released.

i am a huge Darkstalkers fan, believe me. i'm just a little dissapointed that they are bringing the PSONE port. is it really gonna be better then playing arcade perfect versions through other means?
  • abigsmurf #7 6 months ago

I seem to remember the PS1 port being pretty awful, especially compared to the Saturn one.

Meh, if it's not the newest version what's the point.

Part 3 and HD version or no sale

I always had a softer spot for the original game (only played the arcade version not the PS1 version) over the sequels although I did enjoy the second game a lot too. The moveset was simplified a lot in the sequels (making it more accessible I suppose) but there was just something about it (also was much more challenging in single player than Night Warriors). I have the PS2 collection though so have all the games :) May have been better for them to port/emulate that than just do a PS1 release though.

Presumably you can pay extra for all the frames cut out of the PS1 port as dlc?

"Capcom wants one million requests before it reignites the franchise."

Yeah they are happy enough recycling their other games so why bother resurrecting an old IP.

Shame though because the Darkstalkers characters play really well in MVC and its a shame there aren't any other ones include in Ultimate Marvel Versus Capcom.

Also while I'm at it resurrect Gargoyles Quest.

"Capcom wants one million requests before it reignites the franchise."

So they can announce it, release screenshots, get lots of fans to contribute, schedule a (paid) demo, then at the last minute, cancel it and put all the blame on the fans?

    The PLAYSTATION VERSION.

I'm sure that even the Saturn version trumps it.

    Nice try Capcom...

European launch "will happen"? We've been stung by that one all too often with PSN. Your best bet is to assume this isn't the case until it actually shows up in Europe. And then get someone to double check, just to be sure.

I look forward to it appearing on the EU PSN Store in 2013

@anthonypappa she wasn't in the first Darkstalkers, which is the one Capcom is releasing. I believe she joined in the superior Night Warriors or DS3, which Capcom aren't releasing...

    So silly! ^_^
