Techland trademarks Dead World

First hint at a Dead Island sequel?

UPDATE: A spokesperson for the studio just told Eurogamer, "Techland is not going to comment on [the trademark filing] at this time."

ORIGINAL STORY: Dead Island developer Techland filed a trademark for something called Dead World earlier this week.

As spotted by Siliconera, the name was logged on 28th October and potentially refers to "computer game software and electronic software programs."

Could it be the first hint that the studio is looking to expand on Dead Island, its recent zombie FPS hit? Or is it just some strategic trademark squatting?

We've asked the Polish developer to fess up and will update should it respond.

Dead Island launched earlier this year to mixed reviews but impressive sales. A movie based on the game is reportedly in the works.

    Excited already, bloody loved Dead Island even if it did corupt my level 45 character lol :p will get back and play it soon when my mate gets his free empire copy :D

    Oooh, I would have gone for Dead Country and Dead World. Three parter there, with bigger and bigger scale.

    Dead World = Dead Island MMO, and it would ROCK. They got already all in there, they just need to expand it and add MMO elements like guilds vs guild fighting for resources, etc. in a big open world.

    It would be AWESOME.

    @XAleX360 spare us with your mmo ideas. The market is full of mmos already, we need better singleplayer/coop games.

    I hope it is set in a city now, with some awsome atmosphere at night with streets full of roaming zombies.

    @Belmonth O really? Full of MMOs? You must be smoking something hard. There is not even a SINGLE zombie MMO out there right now, and it has the potential to be an amazing game. Plus, the wording "Dead World" clearly hints to that, so live with it.

    Yay! Hope this is a sequel as DI was a brilliant game in the end. Definitely had a ridiculous amount of issues at launch, but I'm very hopeful a sequel is exactly what they need to show they've learned and make the game DI almost was.

    Cool, liked the first game but got a bit bored by the jungle section, hopefully they can get a bit more variation to the gameplay in thenew one. Also I second the call for this not to be an MMO.

    The world has been abandoned, the dead roam over the majority of the world.

    DI was tremendously enjoyable when it wasn't spamming you with Infected or randomly deleting items from your inventory so I'd love to see a sequel.

    Loving DI, just playing through it solo right now on PC (just arrived at the lab in the jungle). Going to run through it again at least once in multi-player. Would definitely go for a sequel, especially if they put in proper high detail settings for PC (including mirrors... that was a bit odd, maybe the zombies are very self concious and took them all out :p)

    Jeez, you'd think they'd step it up with Dead Peninsula or Dead Province or at the very least tackle Dead Continent before going global..

    Ah well, guess I'll play Dead Nation before and Dead Space after to complete the spectrum
